The thing to remember is that the flow characteristics of this test are the same for ever single engine produced. They are all air pumps, this isn't just an LS intake test, or even just Chevy. This is all engines intake testing. Its the same protocol we have seen since dyno testing began. We know a certain runner length, volume, and velocity will produce peak power in a given rpm range for a specific set of engine parameters.
The part that has forever confused me is why major manufacturers for decades discarded all this information and built pure junk motors knowing they could do better.

A long long long time ago when I put together my first LS motor heads/ cam/ Nitrous setup. I went with the Aluminum Weiand Lingfelter Signature series for many reasons. Some more things to consider besides the power.
    - Price. Because of the "heat soak" rumors and the fact that the FAST intakes were the preferred monkey see monkey do back in those days these aluminum intakes got a bad rap. So you use to be able to pick these up used cheaper than you could a LS6 intake or the same $300-$350 price range. The Fast intakes were always way out of my price range starting out. It really didn't make sense to me to pay over $1,000 for my set up.
    - The aluminum intakes had some advantages instead of the heat soak rumors people went with because they were stuck on the composite FAST intakes. Mine came with a window for porting I purchased it used from a speed shop and they ported it for me. I was also terrified of having a nitrous backfire on the FAST composite intake and blowing up $1000 just like that. I did have a nitrous backfire with the Weiand and that window blew out and saved both the intake and the motor.
    - Draw backs were it was heavy.... Didnt seal easy and always was a little bit more difficult to seat than a normal composite intake.
It also used gaskets instead of o rings which help complicate the issue.
Overall for the money it was a great value and I think it was the right choice. Car ran great and beat many cars with FAST intakes and similar mods.
Would love to see a test with some pocket port work done on one to see if it comes anywhere near close to the FAST

    • @doodlebug6833
      @doodlebug6833 4 года назад +2

damn, never thought of the nitro causing a frag grenade effect with a weaker composite material, but it makes sense that the aluminum is able to hold down the backfire vs blowing up your money basically XD . so from what i read, if you want room to upgrade and have peace of mind for reliability, go with a hunk of metal and have the headache now vs later XD. Thanks for sharing this great little tid bit of experience!

Thank you for your investigative LS work. In my 72 Nova sits a very well built 385ci gen 1. Almost 500hp on dyno with performer rpm. Spinning 26×10 drag radials at the track got old fast. Went to a Weiand Team G single plane and rolled the fenders again for 28×10. Mickeys and problem solved and now noticable more power up high. The 6 liter and 4L80e in my work truck will be on notice when things go bad with the body rust-wise. I need 800 or more power! Twin turbos here l come if we keep our rights and keep working....

The LSXR-T manifold is for clearance concerning throttle placement in a truck. That is why GM made that style manifold. An LS1 would have conflicts and clearance issues. Look under the hood of a 99 or later truck and you'll understand.

So my LS build is a little bit of a mutt when it comes to parts.
LR4 using a set of 4th gen connecting rods
spent a bit of money to get a decent set of pistons (DSS Racing 3.785" Forgings meant for floating wrist pins)
Summit Pro LS stage 2 low-lift truck cam kit int/exh (.523"/.524", 218/227 at .050", 112+2 LSA). It also comes with the required spring upgrade for the additional lift and duration at RPM.
So I got a deal on a TBSS cathedral port intake, and honestly, I'm really happy that I got mine for about $110 fully dressed with injectors and fuel rails.
Went on FB marketplace and found a dude selling LS1 cylinder heads for my 4.8for $120, hand-polished the combustion chambers to get rid of casting flash, and installed a set of stock-size Manley race series SS intake and exhaust valves (2.00" int/1.55" exh.)
yes, it's a little strange, but I chose to follow the 'run what ya brought' mindset, so I think I'll be alright. Not looking to make the most power out there.
I just wanted a decent combination that I could get on the cheap from the secondhand market. And anything I couldn't get from there I got something better than stock.

Just look at the runners and the platinum size and that would give you the results more or less compared to the rest..the over all winner will still be the fast 102 LSxr

Can you do a test for factory lsa supercharged engines and see the gains from ported runners vs nonported runners ? Like start with unported blower , port snout, port blower , port runners see what gainz are seen

    Great test.
The best intake is still the fast 102mm.
The msd makes about 10hp more but is down in hp and torque through most of the rpm range compared to the fast.
Fast 102 for the win on this combination.

@@richardholdener1727 you should try a ported fast 102 vs a ported MSD from Tony Mamo.
These are the best ported versions you can get that actually get good gains from his strategic port work.

Keeping my tbss intake, going with a BTR stage 2 v2 truck cam in my little 4.8L. Gonna attempt to take advantage of the factory 243s and make good power! I’m planning to ditch these 3.23 gears in my 08’ single cab for some 3.73s or 4.10s and go from there! This will be my first build, everyone starts somewhere! This intake video just goes to show how well factory intakes can be especially the tbss! I believe the great equalizer boost could be in my future 👀

so what I learned from this was... just run the stock truck manifold it comes with ( provided it fits under the hood) and spend your money on a terminator ECU. was seriously considering running a dual plane carb setup but in reality... I'd be spending more money to make less power. really wanted to see more out of the dual 4 setup but that was a huge let down. looks cool but thats about where the buck stops. thanks for doing these tests and sharing the info in such detail.

Have you ever done a duration vs lift LS cam test? How much power does a "low lift" .560 (cheap stock replacement valespring type cam) 220-225ish duration cam make vs a .600 lift 220-25 duration. Possibly going to the extremes of 200-210ish duration 600 lift cam and a 230 ish duration "low lift" cam. Mainly interested since most stock LS heads dont flow anymore at .600 than they do at .550.

O.K. Richard, thanks again for working you ASS off to educate me !! Runner length is key to tuning this stuff, (you've been telling us that forever !) Here's a test I would like to see...I have the same dyno you have, and the ECM wideband stuff on my Super Flow Dyno, the question is ...WTF? Most of the stuff I do is carbureted(approx 75-80%) I noticed that my AFR readings are sometimes far apart from each other. The one side will be nice and sweet mid to high 12's on AFR, but the other side will be sometimes 10 or 11:1, It seems that the dual plane stuff is worse, but sometimes even the single plane stuff does it.I've swapped jet sizes side to side, I've swapped sensors, and even swapped sensor cables side to side, and the readings still stay the same.(It's not the Dyno, or ECM Wideband system.) I've tried cutting the center divider on the dual planes and/or running a open spacer under the carb. that usually helps, but no always. I've noticed that the dual plane intakes with the center divider that goes to the top, never runs smoothly after 5500 ish,as well as losing power.
    thanks man , you're AWESOME !!!

@@richardholdener1727 .Thanks man! No I'm talking about most every engine I test, it seems as if the thing has a dual plane it's worse, but still dual planes are terrible !. I suspected the sensors/or sensor boxes,So I swapped sensor side to side, no change, then change sensor box side to side, still no help. Grrrr.. Thank you so much for all your hard work, I can't even imagine how much time you spend testing .

Do you think I would benefit much from going with a FAST LSXR intake over a ls6 intake with this setup?
5.7 LS1 (2000 Trans Am) with stock bottom end
    • HEADS: Stock 243's decked 20 thousandths
    • CAM: Comp cam 54-446-11 .595/.598 232/234 112LSA
    • INTAKE: Ls6 intake
    • INJECTORS: 60lb Deka
    • HEADERS: 1 7/8" Long Tubes with true duels out the back

I'd love to see water/meth port injection on a long-runner manifold. I'm guessing it'd need to be custom. The only bolt on I know of is Snow's port injection for the Holley Hi-Ram.
