Such a appropriate name to describe an effective and efficient elbow strike. Very good point on using Law defensible targets of the body. Great synthesis from Bong Sau elbow. I love using elbows.

excellent, I have chum kiu and biu gie in mind when I see this, for the forms I practise; but the explanation is on point with what I have to focus on and improve. thanks!

Good instructions and examples. In wing chun we practice a variety of elbows, the diagonals are practiced in the biu gee and bat jam do forms. It is insightful that if you just turn your torso, shoulders the elbows can naturally be thrown in the same arc and sync.
I am not sure of your country location, but I disagree that you shouldn’t use or train it so you don’t have to “explain to police.”
As a martial artist I seek peace and de-escalation whenever possible. But if someone means to seriously injure or kill you, you cannot ‘play nice’ and avoid strikes to neck and head. What if someone is drunk, high, or on speed? Especially if the attacker is taller, stronger, faster, or if there is more than one attacker. This is especially true for women attacked by a man.
You are fully within your legal rights of self defense, the doctrine is to “ use appropriate force to stop the threat. “ A larger, stronger attacker, or more than one, is a clear disparity of force. If you are injured or knocked out there is nothing to “tell police. “
Let’s say you are surprised at close range by two assailants, the first grabs your jacket to set up a punch. You turn and slam your elbow into his neck/jaw and drop him. Or you follow with second elbow and a couple knees and sweep. Then you are left with one attacker who could run away or be spooked, or if not you are fighting one instead of two. That could prevent serious injury or even save your life.
Actually training elbows carefully with partners, heavy bag, wooden dummy, and B.O.B dummy is a good life skill and is also an important component of Krav Maga for example, they even have 7 elbows in that style. It trains you to stay rooted and balanced, apply speed and power, and instant force into the target.
I am liking your wing flow videos as well, thank you for creating them.

Well.. in wing chun is more a side step but is not a "step" but more a movement, not a small jump like in Boxing... is a "continued" movement of the feets... its hard to explain but if you search here on RUclips you can find it

I luv ur art Mark Stas. I like the technique shown with the elbow slice and how it may fit in to one's body position. That's great teaching if u come at someone but what if someone comes at u like that? Is there a way to counter the impact or do u have to adjust ur pain tolerance?
