    I'm a retired mechanical and automotive engineer so I have some street cred. I must say after 45 years listening to guys explain things I have to say you are one of the best! Clean, precise no unnecessary banter just straight to the point and you know your stuff. No substitute for experience. As far as a video presentation, no damn annoying music or trying to be an "entertainer", that just gets old. Great job!

    • @michaelhoenes

      the pump has to go back a couple inches to clear the input shaft. if you cant clear the rear flange, loosen or remove the motor mounts to gain clearance.

      Loved the video I’ve just been installing the new forward frictions into mine and you mentioned a little resistance is fine but with mine it’s really tight and won’t turn, I’m wondering if the new frictions create extra drag? Or maybe I’ve got the snap rings mixed up? Any advise would be awsome, keep up the good work!

      @@danl382 good luck. I eventually pulled the gearbox many months later during a major refit in Thailand. The input and output shafts were badly corroded as was the damper/drive plate. Gave the lot to a local expert to do a total rebuild/refurnish. Had it just been the clutch plates and seals I would have done it myself.

    I had the pleasure of requiring a rebuild if a replacement vd specifically a 10-17 007. It is a 1.91 :1 reduction transmission. Although I have spent a lifetime rebuilding things as required this is the best representation one could hope for. My only comment is there will be variations to your own vd as us the case in my rebuild. Specifically I had 12 return springs for the reverse clutch and the metal disc with the three notches was required to be mounted opposite that as described in the video. This is because the 12th spring is located as to interfere with the wide part of the odd sized flange. Just a note to be aware of. No doubt has something to do with the reduction gearing or perhaps date of manufacture. Excellent presentation, thank-you!

    I have question thanks, ....when we started the boat engine today then once warm I pushed the throttle forward and engaged forward gear, as I gently throttled away from the boat ramp at about 1500 rpm I heard a serious roughness that caused the 125hp inboard to stall, I started it again gently engaged reverse and again as in increased the revs it's sounded rough as hell with each rotation and again the motor stalled. and this is before I could even throttle down to commence take of, Finally I started the engine again but very gently feathered the forward throttle slowly and increased the revs very slowly and the boat continued to about 3000 rpm and 15 knots plus, but it's was sounding rough again so I back off to idle speed then forwarded again faster and instantly heard rough grinding noised and the motor stalled before the boat could even get to 2000 revs, instantly stalling both in forward and reverse after successfully engaging the gears but stalling as I push the throttle only up to 1100 or 2000 rpm, when in reverse at idle speed I'm sure I can hear a rotating knock or crunch gear type of sound that happens in rithium with each rotation be it 750rpm or 1200 rpm. Can you please advise. Kind regards, and thanks so much for this great tutorial. Be we, regards from Robert, Melbourne Australia.

    Awesome Video!! Thanks so much for making it! I have a 2010 Malibu Wakesetter with a velvet drive 72L-V and while its not exactly like the 10 17 that you rebuilt in the video, there are a lot of similarities. While wakesurfing about a month ago, we blew out the front seal. After watching your video, I've decided to rebuild mine myself. I have obtained the velvet drive service manual but still have a few questions that hopefully you can help me with. On both the service manual and your video, the end of the planetary gear has a lock nut, but on the 72l-V there isn't one, there is a female spline that the v drive slides into. So how do I remove the Planetary gear from the housing. Second question is how is the control valve removed. Also, how do you recommend me cleaning all the parts so that I don't get any rust or damage to them. Thanks Again!

    You mentioned something about there not being a 100% neutral. I have a definite "dirty neutral" with my 71C 1:1. Makes it hard to dock the boat, I've got basically a regular forward, a 30-40% forward in neutral, and reverse. Would be nice to get closer to a real neutral. Would a rebuild give me a neutral or just minimize what I currently have?

    • @LakelandAutoMarine
      @LakelandAutoMarine  2 года назад

      If it’s propelling the boat forward while in neutral then there could be an issue with the forward clutch. With the engine off can you rotate the prop shaft?

      My 72C also creeps forward in neutral. It does propel the boat albeit slowly. It also causes quite a clunk in the remote v-drive and or the jackshaft when selecting reverse. I can rotate the shaft by hand when engine off - does that give an indication that the plates are still ok?

    • @LakelandAutoMarine
      @LakelandAutoMarine  2 года назад

      You probably have enough forward clearance then. Clunking could be too high of RPM, or excessive backlash in the V-Drive. I take it this is a 33’ Carver?

    Should the transmission spin free in neutral? Like if I hold the output shaft while turning the input shaft, I can’t hold the output from turning. Like I have no neutral.

    • @LakelandAutoMarine
      @LakelandAutoMarine  11 месяцев назад

      If you can't hold it while the transmission is in neutral and it propells the boat forward then yes, you have an issue.

    ever see a leak from the case bolts and bubbling? had mine rebuilt by a local shop, leaked, they fixed again, back in the boat, leaking again and started slipping lol. about 20 min total run time.

      Thank you for the reply. I’m starting to repair these types of marine transmission’s. I have one that the customer says he has no reverse. I’m going to check the linkage first of corse. I’m thinking of checking the reverse pressure as you showed. It may be a stuck Controle valve?? Any thoughts of how to diagnose it in the boat? I can’t thank you enough for this video. Great job explaining this system.

    • @LakelandAutoMarine
      @LakelandAutoMarine  2 года назад

      @@scottsmith2869 I’d check your reverse pressure at the tap in the front housing. It’s an 1/8npt plug right at the bellhousing. Should have 100-125psi in reverse there. If you don’t have it then either you have a leak in the reverse circuit or a control valve. If you have good pressure then the trans needs to come out as it’s an internal failure of some sort.

      Well I found the problem. This older trans has only one reverse disc. It is broke and the springs got mangled up.
      I got all my parts and started putting it back together yesterday while watching your videos, pausing as I went forward.
      I got to the pressing of the forward clutch hub to the piston assembly.
      It was almost all the way down. I checked the snap ring grove and one side was half covered and the other had a bit more to go, one more pump on the press!!!!!!!! Then pow,,, the bottom of the piston case broke. It must have been slightly cocked? I got a used one ordered.
      Any suggestions on what not to do ???
