Solo Hiking the Tasman Glacier Walks (The Longest Glacier in NZ!) at Aoraki Mount Cook National Park

- The longest glacier in New Zealand, Haupapa/Tasman Glacier is 23 km / 14 mi long and as much as 600 m / 1968 ft thick in places. Found in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, flowing down from the peaks of the Southern Alps, experience it for yourself from the Tasman Glacier Walks near Aoraki Mount Cook Village.
The Tasman Valley Tracks provide a short and satisfying option to see some of the best views in the Tasman Valley, as well as a much shorter (and quieter) alternative to the popular Hooker Track.
On the Tasman Lake & River Track, walk to the boat jetty for the Tasman Glacier Boat Tours (www.hermitage....) and get up close and personal with the terminal Tasman Glacier Lake, where icebergs can often be seen (in summer & winter). On a still and calm day, the lake is like glass, reflecting the surrounding peaks like a mirror!
On the Tasman Glacier View Track, climb almost 100 vertical metres (328 ft) past the Blue Lakes (a fantastic swimming hole in summer) to a panoramic lookout of the Tasman Valley, Tasman Glacier Lake and the Haupapa/Tasman Glacier at the head of the lake. Marvel at the effects of glacial erosion, and imagine what the valley would have looked like when the glacier was at its fullest extent.

I love the Mt Cook area, that and Te Anau area would be my favourites.. although I haven't spent alot of time up the other Tasman area Haven't been along here, sad to see the glacier length signs... reminds me of Fox :( Hope you're settling in nicely into CHCH life :)
Yes I'm desperate to get back to Fox, but haven't been in almost 20 years and I think the shock will really upset me. So sad, but a sign of the changing times....
It's crazy how our 2 countries can be so different but so close too, i'll eventually get over to NZ one day although it is a long way from here in Western Australia to NZ.. It does look pretty awesome in NZ, Aoraki is like 1,500m more elevation than our biggest mountain in Australia.. Have you ever done our Bibbulmun track here in Western Australia, it makes or breaks people, awesome track and worth the hike, it's also worth taking your time in some parts just to soak it all in.. On your other video when you were talking things people pack they do not need, you see a lot of that on the Bibbulmun track lol, you pre post what you need to towns on the way instead of trying to carry it all, when you see people with loaded packs on the trail and the look on their face when you say don''t you pre post resupplies at towns along the trail so you can pack light, lol..

I’ll always remember our high school trip out in the boats (25 odd years ago) where we parked up on the far side of the lake and jumped in! The biggest high after getting out that I’ve ever experienced! Was amazing 😆 Not sure I’d be so brave these days lol

Well, we’ve got six weeks over there so planning to do some multi-day hikes in addition to day-walks in the south as well as north. At the of the list we have the Gillespie Pass Circuit and Mt Angelus Hike. Will be spending a few days around Marlborough Sounds so might do a few days on the Queen Charlotte Track as well. I have done a few of the great walks previously (Milford, Heaphy and Waikaremoana) so we’re aiming for some less visited areas this time around. Will be bringing a tent so we’ll not be that dependent on hut availability. NZ truly is a hikers paradise so it’s incredibly hard to choose 😀

Can't wait to hear how it goes, so please make sure to let me know :) I've also heard good things about the Travers-Sabine and Greenstone Caples, but not sure if they fit your 'less visited' criteria (perhaps you'll get lucky, but there's so many public holidays at this time of year that it's hard to know!). Good luck!
