  • Mueller Hut is often regarded as one of the best overnight hikes in New Zealand; but reaching the hut is no simple walk in the park.
    The 10.5 KM return trip includes a demanding ascent of over 1000 meters in just ~5 KM; the challenge is part of the trek’s appeal.
    Hikers will be rewarded with stunning views of the Hooker Valley, Aoraki/Mount Cook and the surrounding mountains.
    Length: ~10.5 KM return
    Duration: ~8 hours
    Date walked: February 2022
    Seasonal restrictions for the Mueller Hut:
    November - April: Bookings are required.
    May - November: Bookings are not required but fees still apply.

    Gorgeous presentation! My old stomping grounds. I watched this for the memories , and wasn't disappointed! Loved the pairing of music and images. The lack of vocal input was appreciated!

    I so appreciate how well done your videos are! I am from Colorado, and saw this vid while planning my trip to New Zealand. My son and I knew right then we had to do this hike thanks to you two!!! We did this hike in April 2023 and although never got to see Mt. Cook due to clouds and drizzle it was amazing! Didn’t feel me legs for four days! Haha Thank you both!!!

      Ah that's so awesome, you guys will have such a great time! If you can, look into spending a night in Hooker Hut within the park. It's along the Hooker Track and a very cute little hut. We've got a video on it as well
      Let us know if you have any questions

      Are you trying to decide between Mueller Hut and Hooker Valley? Both are great and you probably have time to do both! You can do Mueller Hut in a day, but that would be pretty rough on the legs, I reckon!

    Wow, thanks for this guys! How bad were the steeper bits/off trail scrambling after the staircase? Would you call it dangerous for the solo female hiker? at any point were there scary cliff edges with wild drop off points?

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya  6 месяцев назад +1

      No scary cliff edges and believe it would be fine for a solo female hiker. It's steep after Sealy Tarns and right near the top it gets a bit shaley and loose, but nothing dangerous. It's a very popular trail with lots of people around. You should be fine 😊👍

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya  Год назад

      We hiked this in February 2022.
      If you're planning to do this in November, do you have mountaineering experience? There's a very high likely hood that there will still be very deep snow around and near Mueller Hut. I don't think the majority of the snow is gone until mid December, but it does change every year

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya  Год назад +1

      Hey Jason, thanks for watching!
      I think for this video we were still using the Panasonic G9 w/ Leica 12-60mm f2.8-4 lens. We've since upgraded to the Panasonic GH6 and a few different lenses.
      We do carry the Peak Design travel tripod (aluminium version). We also use a GoPro Hero 10 as a secondary camera

    How much extra distance do you walk setting up and fetching your camera before/after shots like that finishing one?

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya  Год назад

      Never calculated it to be honest! I don't think it's that much though. Maybe 10-40 meters or less each shot. I've been doing less tripod shots since it's easier to just film Danya haha 😅

    Is the hut only for shelter or can one obtain provisions there?

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya  2 года назад

      Most huts have water + sleeping matt's, but you need to bring your own cooking gear, food, sleeping bag, etc.
      You also have the option to tent around Mueller Hut
      All the Great Walk huts include gas.
      Some huts are free, some you have to pay for

    Thanks, but too slow. Boo for use of a GoPro... the fish eye lens makes easy slopes look bold and precipitous. But a useful video for showing what might be expected. Sadly, the DOC seem to love to 'suburbanise' the wilderness.

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya  Год назад

      That's interesting! I find the GoPro makes hard climbs look easy. I also tend to use the GoPro in Linear mode which flattens everything out and gets rid of the fisheye effect
