Great video. These are the exact same symptoms that I'm having. The dealer wanted to remove the lower timing cover to inspect the timing gear for $1,200. Whaaat? I had it towed home.
Great video. Thank you for the heads up. I have the same code coming on but no overheating, just underheating (lol) - i have suspicions of the thermostat being stuck open. Thanks again for the insight!
Did you ever replace your thermostat? I got the same issue as you. My car came from Florida last year so I think the thermostat is original because they don’t use there heat as much as we do in ny
@@tonybristol9132 well thankfully my heat works just fine still. Good luck to you up there, I can't imagine not having heat in NY. Short answer, I have not changed mine yet. I gave an attempt to this guide but I found that I may just need to pull the whole water pump out to get the thermostat. I had to remove all bolts from water pump to get some wiggle room, but still gave me a hard time. You may have better luck
@@thelitos07 yeah, it can still be a tight spot. If you change the water pump, replace all the gaskets. I reused the transmission cooler pipe gasket and it later developed a leak (video on that coming).
I couldn't unseat the water pump to make room the remove that tricky bolt. IVE losened all the water pump bolts, Did you take off the water pump drive belt? Mine is super tight. Didnt see that part. . .
It would not fit. I tried numerous different universal fittings but they were all too tight. I even jt tried a long fallen wrench. But you found something that fits, throw it up on the comments. It would be great to not even have to loosten the water pump.
Awesome video! I also own 2012 cc(sport). Bout to replace stock radiator with aluminum performance one, and figured I would change the thermostat as well! Thanks so much!🤘🏾
How were you able to sit it in there correctly? I’m having the same issue but I’m stuck at tightening the 2 thermostat housing bolts, it seems like it’s leaving a gap and I’m not getting it to seal correctly, also did that thermostat work? I have the same one and I was thinking it might not be the one the car needs
The thermostat that I used fit correctly. It is a little tricky getting it in so it slides in all the way. If not, the housing will not seal correctly. I hope you get it figured out!
Way too many dealers just throw up their hands and say it's a head gasket when the car overheats. My dad's Toyota had overheating issues and the dealer instantly said "head gasket" when in reality the coolant was very low because we knocked a hose loose while doing the alternator. Pretty crazy.
@@thelitos07 Exactly! Overheating is not the ONLY symptom of a bad head gasket. Thank goodness that I've found an independent european car shop that seems to know what they're doing for 1/2 the dealer cost!
good day friend, at minute 7 I see a connector hanging. Can you help me to tell me what the name of that sensor is and what it is for? in my passat cc turbo it comes disconnected. Thank you. Greetings from Sonora, Mexico.
Did you ever use the o ring that came with the thermostat? I got a new housing and a thermostat but the housing already came with a seal (o ring) installed but it’s a bit smaller and thicker so don’t know If I would need 2.
Mine did the same thing for months until the thermostat finally quit completely. p2181 and no overheat until one day the thermostat stuck closed and caused the overheat. Either way, that code is telling you the thermostat is not operating within Volkswagens parameters.
I have the same year and make, with about 85000 miles on it. It's not overheating while driving, but ever so often coolant will drain from the reservoir. What do you think is causing this?
Hello Bryan, sorry for bad English, but I will try to explain. Is it possible to change fan turn on temp? Default behavior - turn on fan on about 105c temp. I want to change this value to 95c temp.
@@bryanfagerstrom4664 so turned out to be water pump leak, and previous mechanic inserted a wrong thermostat and thermostat housing.😅, it was an easier fix buying the full assembly of the pump.
My temp light came for the first time since owning the car and when I pulled over the liquid inside the reservoir was boiling like hot water on the stove, any ideas what could be causing it? The light did go away after leaving the car off for a few hours, but after a 14 minute drive the liquid was still boiling with bubbles and all.
The longer end (shaft) of the thermostat goes into the outside housing. Be careful: both shaft ends of the thermostat have a hole that they must fit into. It's quite easy to mis-install the thermostat and still be able to bolt down the cover.
In the video I explain how narrowed down the thermostat, it could be any number of things: head gasket, thermostat, bad water pump, broken water pump belt, or even a bad radiator.
The temperature sensor is on the water pump housing. It’s a pain to get to. Passenger side of the water pump. Located under the intake behind the throttle body.
thank you bryan! i’m a 16 year old girl who had no clue what i was doing and u got me through it!!! lol

I would probably go ahead and change both water pump and thermostat

What’s need to change in my 2012 Volkswagen CC sport that don’t wanna start when it have cold weather ?
Could be any number of things. Never had an issue with that, sorry.
Is the thermostat on VW Tiguan 2009 on the same location as this car?

Question regarding thermostat
What celsius rated thermostat did you install. 87c or 95c
I don't remember, sorry.
Yo I’m getting the code p2181 but my car isn’t over heating at and I did the same as you I replaced the water pump but not the thermostat.

I have the same year and make, with about 85000 miles on it. It's not overheating while driving, but ever so often coolant will drain from the reservoir. What do you think is causing this?
I would look underneath on the front side of the engine to see if there is evidence of a leak. A failed head gasket will also consume coolant.
Head gasket or oil cooler.
It's so much easier getting to the thermostat from the bottom of the car.
Hello Bryan, sorry for bad English, but I will try to explain.
Is it possible to change fan turn on temp?
Default behavior - turn on fan on about 105c temp.
I want to change this value to 95c temp.
The fan is controlled by the computer, I think you would need a computer to hook up to reprogram the engine management system.
How did you get the thermostat and o ring seal to hold 😕😕😕

Check the temperature of your radiator. If its cold, than it is more than likely a bad thermostat.
Need to test the pressure of the coolant. Could unfortunately also be the intake/head venting gas into the coolant passages.
Cooling system code pop up on mine my heat is blowing kinda lukewarm air but the air works fine

Hallo, do you have the Video from the throttle body removal? Thanks

Hi Sir, how long does this job take you from start to finish???
9min 34 sec
It was prob an hour. But I have experience working on the car. Might take longer.
But which point of the thermostat goes into the housing ? I’m stuck on that point

Можно поменять сам термостат без корпуса?
Does anyone know where the thermostat sensor is on a 2014 cc
The temperature sensor is on the water pump housing. It’s a pain to get to. Passenger side of the water pump. Located under the intake behind the throttle body.
Anyone have the source for the thermostat housing
next time just remove the oil separator cover, that will allow you to get easy access to the thermostat housing bolts..
Thanks!!!
Engine code?
Did this fix the overheating issue?
Yes it did. Also, no more P2181 code.
Ok where is the other sensor It has 2
No Podrían haber puesto el termostato en un lugar más fácil
That's a lot of work just for a thermostat removal
That’s vw for ya.
