  • This is a video to add some additional clarity of the Youcanic thermostat replacement video for the 2009-2016 VW Tiguan Thermostat replacement. I completed this job 1/10/2023 but struggled a lot to get the water outlet to seal on the thermostat. It turns out that Murray and Doorman make a revised water outlet that actually seals.
I would not attempt this job without buying the revised water outlet.

I found this very helpful as there aren't very many videos on the tiguan out there. Any additional information is great!

I had similar issues; I broke the ear off twice before I realized it does not seat. If you tighten the allen head bolt all of the way you will absolutely, break the ear off. I put a thin shim between the thermostat housing and the water pump housing on the allen head bolt side. This has been very frustrating. I also found that there must be a couple of different designs because I bought the thermostat separate from the housing it rattled when assembled. I found 2 different stem lengths. When assembled with the hose to the housing off, push up on thermostat with your finger to see if there is excessive slop, basically see if thermostat moves up and down easily. not talking about compressing spring. I recommend buying the kit that comes with housing and thermostat.

This really confuses me because my 09 tig has a metal housing and everywhere else shows a plastic housing. Damn thing is leaking like crazy too

okay so when you say it doesnt seat right, are you talking about the gap it leaves for the bolt? i got new bolts for this and the left side gap make it to where the bolt isnt long enough to screw in, i couldnt get the old ones back into because they are stripped
