this song is from my small homeland - Podillia! it is sung by carolers on Christmas holidays, like many others. It is still pre-Christian, so it is not Christmas, but New Year's. 'Shchedryk' has been performed millions of times, as a Ukrainian Christmas carol became a classic worldwide over the last hundred years. Now it is widely known as 'Carol of the Bells'
Thanks for the wonderful reaction. This is one of the most ancient Ukrainian folk songs because it was written during the pagan celebration of the new year in the spring.
I think this is the best translation of the original Ukrainan lyrics. BTW the word "Shedryk" comes from "shedryj', which means "generous'. So this song is literally about wishing wellfare to a good master or rather farmer. In Ukraine the second name of Christmas is "Generous evening" and it comes from pre-chistian times. But if you analize the original lyrics you'll find that they are actually about... spring :) Kinda interesting thing telling us about the ancient traitions of Ukrainians. Dear Uncle Momo, thank you! It is good surprise, that you find this song now! But it is so nice, that your reaction to this song was not lost in the past! Might be you know, that concert of 100-hundred years of "Shchedryk" was in Carnegie Hall last week! The event was co-hosted by Martin Scorsese and Ukrainian-American actress Vera Farmiga. This song is in movies: Die Hard 2: Die Harder, Garry Potter, Alone Home... might be more, but I found these. Actually, "shchedrivkies" are spesial songs, which we sing on New Year to call success and rishness to all homes. We have "koliadkies" - Christmas songs (to glory God) and "shchedrivkies" (shchedrik-sccedrik-shchedrivochka). The singing came out very simple, without any special vocal techniques, but it is so clear-voicing, authentic, and genuine that you can't help but re-listening it again and again!
You can hear “swallow flew in” in the lyrics because the song goes deep to the paganizm period and the celebration was early spring. the tradition is to get dressed in the strict traditional costumes (several rolles for the groop), go to neibouhood houses sing the carolls (several stages: to call homeowners, to greet, to with smth to each family member), spray some seeds, get some treat (candies, fruits, cackes, money as well))

The song goes back to those times (or maybe even earlier) when Rus' was not yet baptized. From ancient pre-Christian era. For the population of Ruthenia (Rus', Ukraine) at that time, the new year began in the spring, that is, when all nature woke up and when the peasants began their year of growing various grains. When Word war 1 was almost finished, Ukrainian started its fight for independence. Shchedryk was represented to the Europe and Canada, and USA during big World tour, to show Ukrainian culture as a unique culture of people, that wanted to realise their right to have their own sovereign country (and the war for freedom was still going on the territory). It was not realised then. But Ukrainians as an independent political nation started their way). And Leontivych was killed by Russian special agents, by the way.. (Thank you for your reaction ❤)
In original Ukrainian folk song "SCHEDRYK" Eileen sings about a Swallow - ancient Slavic pagan symbol of Spring. Because before Christianity Slavs celebrated New Year in Spring with a stert of ressurection of Nature.

Little do people know that one of the most covered songs, "summertime", originates from a ukrainian song too.
Ой, ходить сон коло вікон
ruclips.net/video/pUyZi0snypc/видео.html
Some of the lyrics go as follows:
A dream passes by
"where shall we sleep tonight?".
"In a warm cottage, where there's a small baby, there we shall go..."
The question "Where shall we sleep", "a warm cottage", "a dream"... Sad words in today's context of war.
very true. the word relate into today's time
I was hoping that someone will write about this 🙂

When Word war 1 was almost finished, Ukrainian started its fight for independence. Shchedryk was represented to the Europe and Canada, and USA during big World tour, to show Ukrainian culture as a unique culture of people, that wanted to realise their right to have their own sovereign country (and the war for freedom was still going on the territory). It was not realised then. But Ukrainians as an independent political nation started their way). And Leontivych was killed by Russian special agents, by the way.. (Thank you for your reaction ❤)
You’re welcome ❤️
In original Ukrainian folk song "SCHEDRYK" Eileen sings about a Swallow - ancient Slavic pagan symbol of Spring. Because before Christianity Slavs celebrated New Year in Spring with a stert of ressurection of Nature.
thank you
