Sadly, this attitude is all too prevalent. It was a very funny reflection on the situation of many first timers in China. After a while, we all feel the need to skip to Chapter 10 to get us out of our slumps.
Sadly is the attitude of the majority of people around. Also, they have a good salary but just blow it off as they get it without investing it right. I've been here 3 years and a half. Have never attended a formal Chinese lesson and already can speak fluently, read and write in Chinese as well. It's about what you want for yourself.
To be honest, some of those restaurants have very stylized food item names. First time I ordered at KFC, I called popcorn chicken 爆米鸡 without looking at the menu, then I realized it was 鸡米花. This video's lessons didn't include other important vocab such as 打开 (when buying bottles of beer) and 不要太辣/太辣/不要辣。
after 80 hours of Chinese classes one teacher asked we "what's your name" and I had no clues of what she said... the school's manager called me and told me they can give me back the money for the remaining 20 hours I already paid as long as I don't enter the school again :( I also tried the "Chinese girlfriend" way and now I'm married... but still can't speak any Chinese
lmao this was hilarious! It does hit close to home as usual though with you guys in the sense that I get really frustrated with other foreigners here who never bother to assimilate and learn the language for themselves. It's really sad. I've been here for just over 2 years and I can speak a pretty fluent level of Chinese at this point, my vocabulary still needs some work but I'm always learning. My girlfriend doesn't even speak English but we're super happy together. Yet on the other hand I've met expats who have been here 10+ years and still can't speak the language, I'm sorry but that's just pathetic... It's clear to me those people shouldn't even be here.
教英语不是一个可行的长期职业,this is so true for the laowais in China xD, especially the ones teaching English in kindergartens with their white skin tone being their only qualification
I really like your videos and love to sometimes shamefully see myself in some aspects of the characters =) but don't you think the "typical laowai" joke is starting to get a bit old? Every other video has some English teacher reference, getting sick from the food etc. There is this attitude of "I am the only one properly learning Chinese and integrating into the culture, so all of these other foreigners should leave my China, they are overstaying their welcome". I still love these kinds of skits but how about some more positivity? (I only mean well with this comment, feel free to hate on me anyway.)
Well to be fair... Only 1 out of every 10 foreigners I would end up meeting actually would learn or at least attempt to learn Mandarin in a serious manner. So it's hard to not poke fun of it when it's a channel all around stereotypes of how you are perceived as a foreigner and how one perceives chinese people and the culture as a foreigner.
Skip outdated old fashioned Chinese character writing, just learn to talk, pronounce, by listening to tapes, CD, medias, movies, music, shows, news with English subtitles and repeat what they say, you can learn anything time any where, very much no cost, bet few years speak like natives, but need to write down Chinese to send Chinese to read, just use pinyin for communication with Chinese, wow lah, that's all. That's why I master 3 languages fluently, Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese and English like natives.
Why can't local Chinese speak English, English is an international language and they need to speak to us in English. We are the Westerners. We have the white privilege here. What part is it that these Chinese don't understand.
Word of the day: tingbudonging
Ting bu dong

Matthew wiggles 说得很对,写得也好,加油!:)
挺标准的美式中文!

I like it. "Ting bu donging" through China. Why does that just sound so funny. Hahaaha

Haha, nail hit head. From one LBH who misses ting bu donging his way through life 😂
Another perfect video
Truth.
I feel like " have you eaten yet " is the hello / wasup in china lol
If you were talking about Thailand you would actually be right: "how are you?" in Thai literally translates as "have you eaten rice yet?"
Kickstarter style.....crazy...lol

Passive-aggressive and motivated-depressing talks at their finest...
Or look up Chengdu's finest: Mandarin Blueprint
isn't located near Chunxilu? I remember this restaurant. I forgot the name of this expensive area. TaiGuLi?
God!! This video is sooo funny!
Ouch. Hits a little too close to home.
Speaking of which... I should skip to the final lesson, "Time to go home, Laowai."
All my hopes and dreams destroyed. Maybe I can get good at coding instead.
Hojo4 coding pays dirt cheap in china
Aiyaaaaaaaaaa 😂😭

Why do some Mandarin speakers pronounce words with 'jer' and others would say the same word as 'sher' (as an example)?
trollking99 There is a lot of accents in China
Kurosora I see, thanks.
actually there is a lot of dialects, not just because of the accents
cristian K Yes but dialects are just accents in some sorts. That's how Chinese call them by the way, now I'm used to say "accents" as well, my bad
I want to learn how to speak English, maybe we can talk. I will teach you Mandarin Chinese.
I can help you. 我正在学习中文。
we know that scam. lol the whole conversation ends up in English. :P

We live in Shanghai so I don't think we have grounds to claim that we're the only ones "doing China right." 😆
beeehn agreed

what about Chinese boyfriends for women in china?
They should totally do a video on that. All too often the attention is lop-sided towards Chinese gfs.
Nick Mason sure you can get a “boyfriend” but they will never actually marry a foreigner or take the relationship seriously.
Purely Pixels not true. even in youtube you can see a lot of videos about marriage with girls from all over the world in China
I've been in China for 5 years, and only seen ONE chinese male/laowai female couple in all this time
这个,这个,baked potato.lol
Bruh..
No
Hahaha
快要笑炸的我
oh lord that was so wrong.
laowai
I can soooo relate to this. I ting bu dong daily, even after 7 years in China lol
Why is teaching English not a viable long term career?
It is. If you are serious at work. It's because many are not serious at work.
Liberal arts major xD
教英语不是一个可行的长期职业... 哈哈
我遇到过中文比我好的外国人。那家伙比我还像中国人。WTF
