    The mega six works because of the kind of show six is, is almost like a concert. ALW completely changing the curtain call for social media purposes is a big red flag in my eyes.

      It's baffling to me if he wants Megamixes to look cool for social media when he recently forced through changes in a show that's had one that's been allowed to film for at least a decade and reduced it to basically nothing. But, then again, it's Lloyd Webber...... 🤦🏻‍♀️

      @@Patmorgan235Us I do know that. The issue isn’t that he made me megamix, he’s been doing that for years. The issue is that he’s included it for social media purposes after the show’s initial release, when another show had coined it. It makes the show look less authentic and more like a money grab

    I think it’s a very dangerous path when a show is adapted for a preferable social media presence. Make your show good because you want to entertain a public. Tweaks are always welcome in MT to keep shows relevant. But I’d love to see ALW create something truly original rather than churning out “reimaginings” which ultimately end up falling flat.

Actually, the first review of "Cinderella" to appear in the US press was in The New York Times, the day after opening night, and written by the paper's London correspondent critic, Matt Wolf. He starts single Only You again and she walks in and says 'Are you singing to my shoe'. That was still in last Thursday but they had dropped where he says something like 'is there a big market for single shoes' and Carrie says yes pirates mostly. I thought he'd just forgotton his line as nothing filled that gap. I absolutely love the show so I'll listen more carefully later in the week - for the 6th time! The curtain call dance seems to have been added as Ivano didn't do that previous to the December shut down. He dances and then Carrie is thrown into the spotlight with her arms in the air.

    This is not the first time ALW has thrown a hissy fit when faced with criticism, taking out his frustration on cast members. It’s becoming easier all the time to believe Patti LuPone says in her memoir.

    I’m curious to see if they will record an updated cast album, or if he would wait till he brings it over to the states for a broadway cast release. ALW is no stranger to releasing multiple albums for a show, he did it for Love Never Dies and now we we have two great recordings of a (not so great) show at two different points in time.

    • @paulmorris4992
      @paulmorris4992 2 года назад +4

      I absolutely loathed the double cd cast recording when purchased at time of release, so much so it put me off going to see the show. A few plays later l realised l should have gone for the single cd and not the double, which I’m guessing is an easier listen. I did finally get to see the show two weeks ago, and loved the performances, and kind of liked the show. I do however feel very strongly that it would be a good idea to get a new cast recording made as the original suffers simply from the fact it had at that point not been performed. The actors had not had a chance to really create and get into their roles, and it shows. It really is never a good idea to record an original cast album until after they show has been given a chance to be performed , and l am not counting workshops. So would be pleased for a new recording, but don’t expect it to happen.

    I have to admit I love this show but I thought a great change could have been if Cinderella gave the shoes back to the godmother and she gives the necklace back saying that something like “here’s a reminder of who you nearly lost… yourself”. Reminding her that she didn’t need to change to get Sebastian to marry her. That way the godmother’s action seem more like she was trying to teach her a lesson and somewhat involves in the plot more. Cause I feel like she was just inserted in the plot just to try and keep with the traditional fairytale. Plus, I think it would have been better if the godmother is either 1) seen around town with the ensemble to highlight how she creates this perfect image or 2) her shop is not in the town but hidden in the forest/unknown and Cinderella stumbles on it by mistake while trying to get to the ball. That way the character would feel slightly more magical and exposes how Cinderella felt pressured to conform to a society she hates for love.

  • @lexiewall2073
    @lexiewall2073 2 года назад +90

    Just saw it today for the first time and it was baffling! The cast was great-Ivano Turco was a standout as were the queen and the stepmother just due to how Odd they were and Carries voice was amazing but I hate the plot line. It’s paper thin and if they were aiming for feminist they failed. It’s very much an “I’m not like other girls” musical which really isn’t helpful. I never got the sense that Cinderella was a nice person-she was bitter and judgey and the premise of the romance was weak. The idea that she would go from fiercely independent in bad Cinderella to wanting to marry the prince by the end of act one was nonsensical and it almost made it seem in the second act that she had realised what she really wanted was freedom and independence, the prince was just a minor bonus, making the whole plot kind of pointless.
    Also she goes to the ball and just wanders around for awhile and I was like girl you had a clear goal here why are you taking so long to follow through? The midnight motif was poorly implemented-I’m guessing she had till midnight because the shoes would hurt and because the Prince would be getting married to someone the next day but it lacked the urgency of the original Cinderella tale-because Ella spent so bloody long wandering about the ballroom.
    The fairy godmother was bizarre-that plot just didn’t feel right. The whole beauty gimic didn’t feel right tbh-you can be pretty, take care of your appearance and still be intelligent and kind and the musical really reduced everyone to bimbos and himbos. If it had explored insecurity more it would’ve had something to say instead of vague “pretty is bad, don’t change yourself even if it makes you feel good”. No one changed in the musical-the really begin and end in the same spot character wise which makes them all weaker characters.
    And I have to bring this up: there were children, like 6 year old children dressed in Disney Cinderella costumes at this performance. Marketing something as pastel and Princess and fairytale brings in a younger audience-the mans man strip tease/magic Mike number is not safe for children. Constantly shut shaming women is not safe for children. Sure ALW thinks he’s made an edgy show but I don’t think he’s realised that he can’t get over the marketing hurdle that is the Cinderella brand. Most people will see the title and think about taking their kids to see it. They won’t think twice about checking the age rating or parental guidance because they’ve seen the Disney Cinderella’s and pantos and rogers and Hammersteins Cinderella and will assume it’s kid friendly. It isn’t really appropriate for under 11’s. Maybe it should’ve been called “Bad Cinderella” to really distinguish it and set a tone.
    And finally, like this review, every single song went on about 4 lines too long. The lyrics were weak and maybe they thought emphasis would help because they love a repeated line but it just made me laugh because it felt like the song was over and Carrie would repeat a line another 2 times. The songs also would roll into each other without enough time to breathe which made it a bit of a blur.
    But the spinning stage was fun and the gimmicky photo stations were working overtime pulling people in (hard to believe they didn’t have them from the start).

    • @TisNessie
      @TisNessie 2 года назад +2

      Interesting you mentioned the lines repeating. I was listening to Far Too Late and I was just like “… you’re saying ‘far too late to sing a love song’ at the begining of every verse, you removed the power of it…” I’m not sure who did lyrics, and I feel bad because ALW did music yet his name is all over this show, but I hope they have other projects to do better in with more drafts and a stronger plot, but if this was the best they could do lyric wise, that they stop

    • @Keychain696
      @Keychain696 2 года назад +1

      @@TisNessie Funnily enough, just last week I was talking to my best friend about how dumb I thought all the lyrics were in the musical, and he told me the person who wrote the lyrics for the songs in Disney's "Hercules" wrote these ones too. I've never seen it, but I'm assuming they did a fine job in that. But, yeah, the lyrics in this show made the whole thing much harder for me to enjoy, which is pretty bad since I never have an issue with musical lyrics

    • @Keychain696
      @Keychain696 2 года назад +2

      Yes, about the child-friendly aspect you brought up -- I thought the same thing about Cinderella putting a dong on Prince Charming's statue. Like, how many parents were horrified that their kids were watching in that moment? Especially if they brought kids under say the age of 8 to see it 😐 I know you should check everything beforehand to make sure it's child friendly, but when the title of your new cotton candy colored musical is literally "Cinderella" you can't really blame parents for not thinking to look up its appropriateness first...

    what I found interesting were few noticeably added lines referencing tourism of Belleville: about merch and making more money!! perhaps to explain a bit more why the 50 year competition is a huge deal? also the godmother character confusion… an interesting cut line of theirs being something like “you’re a bit late my other clients having been braking their backs getting ready all week” , is that a tweak in a nod to slightly address your well said points from the previous vid? (Belleville aesthetic v cinders/sebastian = ugly narrative)? I’m a big fan of the show and love examining it closer lol- all the cast do fab job!! Lauren Byrne as cinders SLAYS xxx

    So I had a similar experience in thinking that ALW Cinderella was a bit "Meh" when I first saw it. "Bad Cinderella" was catchy and the only song I really remembered, and the only scene I sat up for was the Queen and her men in waiting routine Hahaha. Oh and the stage spin was a cute surprise.
    But then seeing it on the "second" opening night with all the changes was a different experience. CHF was and always is fabulous but the rest of the cast seemed to be more animated and funnier (slightly more panto but it works). I feel that even when script wasn't changed that delivery did. The pace was SO much better and I really enjoyed it.

    Sure, it's a little touchy that they are trying to advertise the show thru the audience but at least, more people will know about the show and be interested to see it.
    But all in all, I'm glad that they said it out loud regarding whether u can film the curtain call/megamix/singalong etc. Been too many times, I had been called out by staff for filming the curtain call in various shows. I get it that different theatres and shows have different rules but I'm talking about the same show and location, where after asking the staff there, and different people give me different response like "oh u can film the ending" or "u can't film it, cuz so and so".
    It just a gives people a peace of mind on whether they can film the ending rather than be like "can I??" or should I secretly film it and feel guilty? Also not wanting to be the leader where I whip out my phone to film and everybody follows suit, and the staff starts screaming at us.

    Out…ect” it was very slow and wasn’t very partyesque, but however in the actual show it was far more fun and up beat and seemed a lot less depressive so i just wish it was like that as well on the cast recording.

    I saw it tonight and agree I enjoyed it but it still feels like a work in progress. Most were humming Bad Cinderella on the way out, which is a good sign. I thought the I Know You between the Queen and Stepmother was a missed opportunity for a huge belter between two strong women, something like the two teachers from Fame or countless other strong female belt duets. The blokes scene was like they'd heard that magic mike was a thing and went way overboard with it. I like the idea of sexualising the guys for once, but the structure of it is better as you said. I hated the forced standing ovation too, I was rear stalls and had to stand to be able to see, only after the cast literally told the front stalls to "stand up" for their attempted megasix moment.

    I am a bit surprised that with some of the best reviews of his career, ALW is having a real problem shifting seats.
    It is probably an unpopular opinion around here, but I really think he has shot himself in the foot with some dreary casting choices. Is this a cost saving decision to go with the current choices?

    I've just seen it last Thursday and I have to say it's not my cup of tea (and MT is always my cup of tea). It lacked that something I can't describe. I was entertained and the cast was amazingly talented, but I didn't feel the excitment I always do throughout the show and when it ends :(

    I've seen it twice, before and after the changes. Really didn't like the added scene with the bluebird at the beginning. It felt unnecessary, and I felt the use of the word 'bastard' when it pecked her sort of stole Cinderella's thunder when she says it to Sebastian later. Other than that, it was more or less the same and I enjoyed it.

    If you did become the face of the one who dislikes Cinderella, you are at least one good looking man! So there are some dudes probably who said "we will let Mickey slide on this one."
    Yes, i like Cinderella. However, even as my mother was listening to my CD, she did not want to listen to it anymore. It did not her.
    Like any presentation, you have 10 minutes to capture your audience just like a casting director csn become uninterested after 1 line snd say "Next!"
    I don't blame her since the opening number is so darn long "....for 49 amazing years," more like 40 minutes.
    I'm a fan of ALW. But like most current ALW shows, they need to go through a huge reworking like Love Never Dies.
    Off topic. I saw Love Never Dies in the 2018 U.S Tour which was based on rhe aussie version, with the exception of 1 additional song and minor changes like more of a slow buildup to Beauty Underneath where Gustav sings that he "hears the music.."
    Cinderella just needs some changes.
    Conversations unfortunately hsppen like this in gaming world too where people aren't allowed to offer criticism and that people depend just be grateful for tge game that did come out. I'm referring to Final Fantasy XV..
    As individual yes we should be grateful for all our possessions and moments in our lives. But if a company offers a product, thet depend on public criticism so they can improve the product. Yes m, there's a big difference between complaining (being critical) and offering criticism. In fact if you TRULY love something or even somebody, you'll very stealthly ask if you can offer advice so you can help the person or the product even better. Thats what people dint understand
    And yes, I'm American, so we can only rely on the cast recording of Cinderella. There's no live version of ALW's Cinderella.

    Whilst I agreed with most of your first review; and all of this one; I adore this show. I have seen it pre and post changes and fully agree the pace changes are spot on.
    Why, oh why though is no-one outraged by one line in the show that is disgustingly inappropriate. During the ball when 3 or 4 of the girls say witty one liners whilst dancing with Sebastian, one of the comments is "I woke up in a glass coffin with a stranger kissing me. That's why I don't drink anymore".
    Am I alone in thinking this is vile? In this day and age, when there has been so much reported about the major problem we have with drink spiking, why are we laughing about that line. It's not funny that she is being kissed whilst asleep/incapacitated. Also, why is it the female's responsibility to stop drinking to prevent such incidents? This line is very "tone deaf" to the mood around drink spiking suggesting that she is at fault for being drunk rather than the person taking advantage.

    I haven’t seen the show in person but just listening to the cast recording and seeing a couple of videos of the show, it lacks and engaging plot, it feels like something a young girl would write just to get the prince?
    I think ALW has written many musicals and it’s sad to see him try something so contemporary and fail. But I think this show could do well but he needs to evaluate what the plot is saying and what the ‘perfect’ bodies of the cast are projecting to the public

    Everything I hear about this show, I cringe. I hate the lyrics. I hate the awful, petty take on feminism. I hate how people feel the need to tear fairy tales to pieces when they have no love or respect for them. People think fairy tales are "broken" and need to be "fixed". I can't stand it and I especially can't stand it when they are "fixed" in ways that are actually problematic in and of themselves.

    ALW hasn’t made a decent musical since Phantom. I did enjoy Aspects, but, that’s one to been seen and not continuously listen too and it’s too boring for today’s audience’s attention span. Sunset had its moments, but, it lumbers on as an okay musical. But, I can tell you, no amount of tweaking will make Cinderella a hit on Broadway. If it comes, I’d say it will last a year, if that.

    Andrew Lloyd Webber has become Norma Desmond and Sad Cinderella is already his Salome. The changes should not be in the wigs but in the whole story. Ok. It´s funny but also confusing, dizzying, exhausting, not believable, bad and sad. The same thing happened to Lord Lloyd Webber with Love Never Dies: he cast a lousy librettist and a terrible director. Now, with the new visual art of the black silhouette with the dress in graffiti to a meh-photo of CHF and IT, the musical is already beginning to lose itself without finding its own graphic identity. Exactly. Just like it happened to Love Never Dies and its many artworks. Now, this version with minimal changes is unfortunately only summed up in a line from the musical Evita: "Your act hasn´t changed much".

    I am way late, but I wanted to add one thing about this production and its advertising. When I saw the ad on the tube (UK), the photo looked like two women, and the name looked like "Cind & Ella", and it made me think it was a sapphic / lesbian show, which spiked my interest. So from that, I'd say it's quite queerbaity, though maybe it's just my perspective.

    I also hate it. Not because I’ve seen it (I haven’t) but because it’s honestly painful to see ANOTHER Cinderella adaptation (we DONT need another one!!!!!!!!!!), the idea that throwing a gay man in there somehow makes it original, and the fact that it’s being made by two of the most egotistical people on the planet. So not any good reasons to hate it, but I hate it for dumb reasons. SO glad I’m not the only one. Haha
