  • Yet another masterpiece of story-telling and delivery, with an exquisite piano intro and extro. It doesn't get any better than this heart-wrenching melody and lyrical story. This performance exhibits a bit of a country flavor in the song that I find not quite as moving as the original, but the extra guitar work and piano work add a layer of magnificence. Must watch!

Most magnificent piece written and performed! In the part where he says she died one evening, than afterwards says she ran calling wild fire, I envision a spirit, that creates the magic of the horse. And the early winter will take his life, and they’re spirit’s will be riding wild fire!!!

Still a beloved song of mine. One of my all time favorites. Just magical and touching! Beautiful words, melody and voice! Omg! From 12:00 thru 12:40....Mike sang that song! Broke it down with his melodic vocals. I have played this song thousands of times. Moves me, and touches my soul. Amazing video! My first time hearing this version. Another level! It's going in my favorites. Thanks so much for sharing! Still listening in 2022 and the rest of my life. ❤️

When he mentions that she died one winter...he then is telling you HOW she died. She died when she ran after her horse Wildfire during a blizzard when he bust through his stall, they were BOTH lost, and obviously died in the blizzard. Then when the owl is hooting outside his window, he knows he is going to die and she and Wildfire are coming for him and they both will ride off on Wildfire into the afterlife. I ALWAYS CRY when ever I hear this song, and it seems most everyone gets moved to tears listening to it. LOVED your reaction, thank you

You have told the story exactly as the lyrics. It's quite clear it's a supernatural love story with the three riding off into the afterlife. I too always cry when hearing.

The entire song is so ethereal and full of magic. What a love story in novel or film form this would make. Tragic yet beautiful. I Remember hearing it first from 1975. Michael Martin Murphy's lyrical masterpiece, 'Wildfire.'

In the middle of the year of our lady in 1976, I was 14 years old, at that time I had my first love, a beautiful 16-year-old woman, who honestly was madly in love with her, for reasons beyond her and me we broke our beautiful relationship, the truth is that I felt like dying, and at night-early mornings I listened to my radio, I remember perfectly when I heard this song for the first time, it seemed beautiful to me, and with what was happening it made me cry rivers, ha ha, until the day of today I still listen to it without getting bored, what beautiful memories !!, those nights I also listened to: Longer-Dan Fogelberg, shannon- henry gross, jessie- Rex Smith, just disagree- Dave mason, Runaway- jefferson starship etc.
Excellent reaction to the video, what you say is exactly what I think of the song, greetings and sorry for the translation, Google made it.

Do Not overlook the Native American beliefs surrounding Owls. 45 Years ago, I met Michael in Red River NM. I was a Ranger at Philmont. We Traded him 2 pack mules to come to our base camp and do a private concert for us. Michael had been deeply involved in the study of Native American Culture - which is what I love about this song. He is a great artist.

You forgot the line, “there came a killer frost.”this line is before the line, “there came an early snow.”
This is THE song that got me into music and song writing. I’m 62 years old this March, and I haven’t slowed down in music and songwriting. This was truly the beginning for me. ✌️

I was searching for CA Wildfires and found this video...I was 6 when it was released but I remember it so well. I've always loved this song. Wildfire busted down his stall and the girl ran out into the storm after him and was lost. If it were a movie it would be heartbreaking.

This song was so trivialized at the time. I was actually at this concert. A point of correction, it was in a small venue in Santa Barbara, not Nashville. I never liked the song, then sat in awe, listening to that incredible piano, then that haunting song. Fantastic.

The line " there's been a hoot owl howling outside my window now for six nights in a row" gave me chills. I believe It comes from a first nationals belief (Kwakwa?) that when you are about to die you hear an owl call your name. I heard that and understood he knew he would die and then join his dead lover who in the afterlife would be riding on Wildfire.

one of the best ghost stories that was written in poetic flavor. Murphy is a Cowboy Country styled performer. He was part of the Colorado sound then, along with others like John Denver. We use to call this Country rock, then...

Wildfire is of course a great and beautiful song. I saw Michael live as
the warm up act for the group America in 1978 in Dallas. He brought his
little 6 yr old son out to play and sing on one song. His grown son now
has played in His band for years. Michael came out of the Austin, Texas
Outlaw country movement with Willie and Waylon, but He was always more
of a easy listening pop country/ Eco/nature performer along the lines of
John Denver. Wildfire was his 1975 breakout hit single that propelled
His Blue Sky Night Thunder Album to be his best selling album. Though
He's had other hit songs Wildfire is just one example of where one
really big hit song can lead to a whole career. In the last 20 years
Michael has specialized in Western/Cowboy songs, and has had a career
rebirth in that genre. But He always does Wildfire in every show.

The pony and woman are possibly an old Indian legend he’s thinking about. He is a farmer dealing with failure (By the dark of the moon I planted but there came an early snow) it is a dream to leave with the ghost horse and woman. He never knew the woman. Murphy (from Texas) studied literature at UCLA so the story is layered and terse and superb. Not a love story but a yearning for release and rescue……I just read about the hoot owl in comments below and that changes this from just melancholy to possibly suicide??? I don’t know.

  • @1957es
    @1957es 28 дней назад +1

The lyrics are so terse there isn’t a wasted word. Who died? The horse, the girl or both? He planted under a dark moon, which is done for luck, but he had anything but good luck. He lost his crop. Most importantly in mythology and hoot owl howling means imminent death. Six nights is pretty intense emphasis. I don’t think he is dreaming about riding with this girl. He says he’s going to leave sod busting behind. Why not? He lost his crop. He probably lost his girl and the horse and I think he’s gonna be dead. that’s my take on the song.

  • @odin2259

Same here. I heard this at age 15. The piano intro is haunting. I don’t believe Jac Murphy took it from Scriabin's D minor. Unless you know otherwise, i think it is far fetched. Did he say he did base it on opus 15? Jac is in Eb MAJOR. I've compared the two and some simularity is there but based loosely on an ordinary arpeggio. Unless Jac said he took it from Scriabin, I call bullshit on the claim.
