- Get to know the Hawaiian legend of the sacred wind gourd and follow Paka’a's fight to restore his rightful place beside the king.
--
Long ago, the Hawaiian wind goddess wielded a gourd that housed the winds of the Islands. It came to hold her bones, along with the life force they carried, and was eventually passed to her grandson, Paka'a. Like his father before him, he became the trusted attendant to the king of Hawaii. But his privileged status also made him a target. Sydney Iaukea shares the tale of the king's betrayal.

"We lost against him the first time; so let's wager our bones in a rematch against the same person with the same group of people against him. This is a good plan."
Myth about hubris are fairly common, especially in like Greek ones.
1500 IQ
Myth logic in a nutshell
@harshshah8025wager their life
@harshshah8025mhm, those navigators must be VERY SMART to rematch the grandson of the wind goddess
Hearing this tale just makes me wish that instead of re-making Moana in "live action", Disney would dare to tell other unique stories from the pacific island cultures. There are clearly many other myths worthy of being seen and heard, at least you guys have enough creativity and integrity to share them with us in beautiful detail.
I’d love to see more of these on the big screen, indeed.
@S.G. Former sorry man, I wish it were false too. I guess the rock needs more money, since he's the one who announced it and is apparently behind this awful idea to begin with. Kinda sad that even he can't see the strengths animation gave to the story to begin with.
Can't copyright a myth though
we want more videos about mythology, all around the world.
thing is, these people actually existed
I like how in this story the target doesn’t get killed and it’s the king who has to make amends. Such a refreshing change from Greek mythology
The fisherman literally had nothing to do with this drama and died
Yeah, 8 innocent poor workers died because a rich guy was upset he got fired.
Just like Lahaina
Hey, bright ears! They were loyal to the navigators and it was THEM who proposed the loser(s) of the rematch would die! Pay attention next time!
@@ryansandwich1086 It had nothing to do with rich or poor! The guy was the king's bosom friend! Also, those fishermen were affiliate with the guys who tried to kill him, plus the idiots bet their own lives against that of the guy's son! They weren't innocent AT ALL!
So let me get this right. In this story TEN men died so that one vengeful advisor to the king could get his job back?? The epic tale of the wind goddess' gift might better be called “A LONG GAME REVENGE MURDER BY LAND AND SEA”
Yeah, but he was a rich guy, so killing 8 poor fishermen is fine.
You guys holes or what, nobody asked the fishermen to bet their life for a race, and the two navigators initially planned to kill the vengeful person.
@@ryansandwich1086 Again, it's not that he was rich; it's because he was the king's friend whom he wrongfully exiled because two guys, who were ALSO rich btw, spread lies about him.
Loyalty is a real thing
Hawaiian culture is fascinating!
I'm happy to live here in Hawaii ❤
It is always a joy to see the tales of other cultures so beautifully told and expressed. TedEd knows how to appreciate and celebrate art.
Tales like this bring me back to my childhood. Learning valuable life and social lessons through folklore and mythology was how I remembered my preschool and kindergarten years. Those lessons stuck with me more than anything else.
TedED on their way to have a unique style for their videos no matter how many they put out
I love the hand-painted animation. It's giving early 2000s PBS kids.
Not me being distracted by the stunning animation that I have to rewatch the video to absorb the story 😅 (I don't mind rewatching tho)
That's why I watch with subtitles 😁
10/10 story, 5/10 pronunciation. Hawaiian speakers should narrate Hawaiian Stories!
I know right! Having Hawaiian narrator narrating a Hawaiian legend sounds more authentic!
no
@@mujtabaraisani7376 ok.
This person doesn't seem to even understand English, considering they mistook an "i" for an "L".
The art style is gorgeous
Such quaint & heartwarming tales in song filled renditions just make the advent of storytelling & writing seem to be that which hath breath of Life & Love's Eternal bind. ❤
What a great bedtime story for your kids, beautiful artstyle
Paka 'a was so angry for being stripped off his privileged that he went god mode. Had a wife, had a son, had the son kill the 2 navigators and also the 8 fishermen appointed by the navigators. What a bloody revenge!
The navigators tried to drown him, and the fishermen were the ones who bet their lives against his son's.
"The sea was angry that day my friends, like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli."
Who would win?
8 jacked fishermen vs some dude with a vase
Thank you ted Ed for making more mythology videos.
Wonderful narration
I know I’m gonna re-watch this video so many times
I love the mythology series , I wanna see some filipino myths some day I’ve never seen any and I wanna feel closer to my culture and family :))
This is such an interesting story! I hope you cover more mythology around the world
This is a great subversion of the proving one's loyalty trope. Instead of subject proving their loyalty to the king, it's the other way around.
*”Do not fear having no friends. Fear having bad friends”* ~My life taught lesson ( more wisdom in my channel)
A very interesting tale. The animation is also excellently done.
Raise the waves. By the way, I have difficulty communicating because I had a stroke in Broca’s area, the part of the brain that controls speech. 2/8/2021 but I lived again. (My wife helped me compose this.)
This animation is so beautiful, and it matches the story so well!
Yeah, right. I like this animation, too. 👍👍
Please consider making more videos on African myths/legends.
I amazed by the Narrator ❤️
That pathway is turning out to be beautiful❤😍
This was amazing!
Is it just me, or is this story somewhat similar to Daniel in the Lion's Den? Jealous people conspire to get rid of man favored by their king, they trick the king, the king feels awful about falling for it, the king is reunited with the man he favored, and the conspirators die.
I was more interested when you had “revenge” in the title, but i get it
fascinating
Beautiful language.
there are an enormous amount of names for different kinds of wind in Hawaiian depending on their direction, place, character, etc. A great deal of the Hawaiian language was nearly lost as the culture and language were actively and harshly suppressed by Christian missionaries and later by the Oligarchy that overthrew the monarchy.
This is a nice little tale
Informative
those poor fishermen stood no chance
It's their own faults for putting their lives on the line.
The narrator is just from another world! Amazing animation though.
Beautiful animation
I need more riddlessss!!
Im not even lying i have watched al the riddles you have
Please 1more riddle
i hope ted-ed makes a video about persian mythology too 😊
Nobody:
Kuapaka'a: Guess I'm on a journey to get the king his bf back
Great story. Could you do a mythology story about Haiti's culture next please
Great! ❤🎉
mahalo for telling these stories. perhaps considering language consultants for narrator (or simply having hawaiian community help with this) to avoid some of the errors in pronunciation.
Nice vidio !
The look on his face at 3:22 needs to become a meme.
Can you do a video about Fire godess pele and Maui ?
The real betrayal took place in 1893
Cool
bro this is just about a vengeful adviser who instills hate into his son and then causes 10 people to die.
Are they like the perfect color
Yes
mikan and iwaki watchin' diz vid under a sakura tree while a soft breeze blows over dem.
💞😍😘🤩🤗💏💟
😊
2:26 So did the king travel to Ka'ula or Kaua'i?
I really want 30mins worth of mythology Does anybody know where I find them on utube?
Well, I dunno 'bout a 30 minute video of mythology, I do know multiple shorter videos have been compiled into a playlist by TED Ed.

1:17 *"Sorry guys the mic fell out of my hand"*
i live in Hawaii and some tips on pronunciation
-A is pronounced ah
-e is pronounced eh
-i is pronounced ee
-o is pronounced oh
-u is pronounced ooh
the okina (ʻ) (it looks like an apostrophe) is a glottal stop
when a line is over a vowel the sound is prolonged for example "ā" would be ahhh, "ē" would be ehhh, "ī" would be eeee. ect
there is no letter "Y"
usually when a W is not the first letter in a word it makes more of a V sound
there are only 8 consonants: h, k, l, m, n, p, w, and the 'okina (ʻ).
Same as in Asian and Romantic languages, then?
I want some Indonesian myths as well, for starter maybe from I La Galigo from Celebes, it's the longest and densest epoch in the world, much longer than Mahabarath and Ramayan epochs
2:29 is that a typo? should it be ka'ula or kaua'i
No, they misread the "i" as an "L".
This is the Hawian version of the Tempest, by Shakespeare.
At least, for the 1st half.
What was his name again?
Kuapaka’a the victorious hero
Jesse forget the King and his betrayal, we need to produce more Balenciaga
Somewhere over the rainbow...
can ted ed makes indonesian tale too?
Hm, reminded me of Greek myths somehow.
your myths are amazing but im stuggleing with a important one. lion crying blood. i know is from the budasit but can you explain that to me and with the final trial and what it means.
Ka‘ula? Not Kaua‘i?
How convenient!
Is this a True Story?
Hard to believe...🙁
I just happen to be vacationing in Hawaii at the time this came out
The lost continent of Mu. ❤ 🎉 😊
Hawaian wind goddes
Wasn't expecting the pronunciation to be so bad... Hawaiian is such an easy language to pronunce, it shouldn't really take long to study a couple of words.
First comment lol . i love this series
Kaʻula?
This is a tiny, uninhabited island that exists but I'm not sure why the video indicated Kauai instead when it was mentioned...
@@dryzalizer Ah I see. Thanks for clarifying.
I adore Hawaiian mythology, such a shame that today people are much more interested in regurgitating well-known stories
Woah 4 minutes ago
and they were roommates
Forgot to capitalize the “l” in the title.
He KILLED those poor fisherman?
That's just wrong.
then you came and la amao mao has been dancing hula for your tourism industry
Aka'a mi se
I have the feeling that they are lovers. Lol
Ever heard of a bosom friendship?
❤
Pog
👍
Ka’ula = Kaua’i? Huh
Kinda petty, the revenge.
Kuapaka‘a, not Kuapāka‘a. Am I hearing her pronunciation oddly??
Maybe the captioning is throwing me LOLOLOL
Nice.
There were no archers in Ancient Hawaii 😂
So, they speared them then?
Yes! I'm ready for the Hawaiian language to get butchered here.
why does this sound like MOANA lmao
