I am from the midwest, and first read about Pele in 5th grade class. I have been fascinated with her since, I am now 66 years old, and the only thing on my 'bucket list' is to sing to Pele to honour her in her own land. Don't know when that will be, but I will continue to do my best to honour her from my home in Indiana. Greetings, thnks and aloha!

I suspect that the egg is in reference to Loihi who is currently underwater just southeast of Big Island - it will emerge out of the ocean in about 200,000 years. That egg, I suspect, is Loihi.

From Generation to Generation...I had story of Buzzard, Opossum, and Fox given to me. Very Short Summary: Great animals coming together long ago because sun was getting to close and was in danger of burning everything. Opossum stood his ground and gained permission to try from other Great Animals. He failed and his tail will forever be bald, but was rewarded with being able to turn turn off brain so as not to feel pain when he is afraid. Then the Fox gained permission from Great Animals Convincing them that his mouth has robbed many eggs now it's time for me to do good with it. He failed and the inside of his mouth will always be black, but was rewarded for his attempt with being awarded as honorable and not only tricky making him even more cunning than before. Then the Great Buzzard alone with it's giant wings swooped up into the air before they conviegned again pushing the sun away finally. For once he was very vibrant head feathers but from that time in he will never again, the The Great Buzzard now marked forever by sun must eat the dead allowing the sun rays to fill the dead thing giving the Great Buzzard a defensive bile and energy to endure another day. Moral of story...Many people look at certain things in nature as gross or unwanted or not liked and the legend is supposed to instill idea of respect for animals and Earth. There's more that can be mined from this legend as in so many.
The egg is Hiʻiakaikapoliopele. She is Pele’s favorite sister, had couple scraps with her too. Her name means Hiʻiaka In the bosom of Pele. It isn’t Loihi, great guess though.
