They were probably fighting to protect the battleship Tirpitz who was moored outside the city of Tromsø back then. In the end the Brits were able to bomb and sink the battleship, marking a great psychological victory over the Nazis.

I may be wrong, but I think you've got a stronger engine, so you can pull up harder than your foe, even though he can out-manoeuvre you.
US P-51s have stronger engines than the BF 109 he was flying in
