  • Sports cars from Porsches are known to depreciate slightly less than competitors, but does this also apply to the Boxster, a car that sits at the bottom of Porsche’s price list, or do you need to spend a multiple for an RS model?

We saw that Porsche Boxsters held up extremely well during last year and that you don’t need a GT3 RS to avoid depreciation. On average the Boxsters lost only 0.13%. This is lower than the Yoy change we observed in november 2023 and also lower than the market average. Moreover, and we didn’t really talk about this in the video, all generations with exception of the 986 are selling like hotcakes. In may 2024, more than 80% sold within three months and cars that didn’t sell were only discounted by a maximum average rate of three percent.

981 S has risen in the UK, only 45 boxster S models, many are high mileage and low spec. Given the gts 4.0 doesnt sound as good and is more than double the cost, the 981 is favoured to do well

*i have 2 hot takes on 981 Caymans and F Types*
*1st-Short hot take on F Type* Ftypes are underpriced. I'm taking ftype any day over a 996. But as 2021 p380 owner, I do truly think the car does not measure up to later gen caymans and 911s. I'd definitely take any model of 981 (except base) or 991 Porsches over any F type personally
*2nd- Long hot take on 981 Caymans:* mark my words, 981S (proper ones), 981 GTS, and 981 GT4, will become the most sought-after in another few years. Even more than 991.1 base and S (but maybe/probably not GTS or well specced S).
Not all flat 6s are made equal. the 3.4L and 3.8L in 981 share similar sound characteristics to the GT3 engines, or rather, they have rhat iconic flat 6 howl. But obvioulsy without the extra 2000 rpm of even higher pitched howl and obviously way less power + still lesser engine + rest of the car is diff but that sound progile is the iconic flat 6 howl that we think of in our heads wheneve we think Porsche
Due being mid engine, that howl is much more pronounced and right in your face than 991.1 911s by far (to the point the 991.1 even with PSE sounds muted to me unless you get something aftermarket and it makes the exterior loud as hell just to hear it by the time it travels to your head). I do think the 991.1 GTS will however become a very sought after car as well.
as for 718 (or 982, whatever you want to call it) cars with the 4.0 flat 6, it simply does not sound as good as 981 even if you got rid of the particulate filters. The whole new engine simply doesn't have that almost hollow reverbed howl that the 981 3.4L and 3.8L engines make. Yes I do still think it sounds plenty good and better than most cars in our modern new car landscape **but it simply does not feel special like the 981s do**
718s (or 982s) are also too refined driving. lacking a lot of character. 981s are almost more jerky and peppy fun. i truly think 981 GT4 will eventually become more sought than 718 GT4 and the 981 GTS will trump all of everything else in 718 lineup.

I was cross shopping f-types and the 981.
There are 637 F-Types for sale in autotrader, questionable reliability, the early ones rusting.
981, agree the bade is underpowered- torque is too low. The S is the sweet spot, save £10-15k and get one with a high spec. Non of the 987 bore scoring issues and all of the sound.
I went with fully loaded 981S boxster, gts spec if you will. There are 45 or so on autotrader, few are specced well.
Prices have risen, but that maybe due to the summer.

As a 981S owner I concur. My car has factory X73 suspension, Sport Chrono, Sport Design wheel, 20” Carrera S rims, PSE. and is awesome to fling around mountain roads. I added the limited edition Focal 911 speakers & apple carplay to factory head unit. Never selling mine. Flat six for the win.

Always appreciate your insights! In your prior 911 update, you had some concern about future prices, due to how long vehicles were being listed for sale. You didn't mention that hear, so I assume Boxsters are currently a bit more stable.

Could you also cover the EU market as well? For simplicity reasons, it would be helpful to mention in the title or somewhere else about which market you're talking about. The EU and US market are entirely different from one another.
The new EU regs coming in July 2024 that killed the non-RS 718 market, the gas/diesel ban concerns, the very high engine size tax (soon to be a lot bigger), all of these factors are changing the entire pricing landscape in the EU, compared to the American market. What a Porsche with a >2.0L engine would increase in value in the US, that would actually lose value over time in the EU.
Since I bought my brand new base Cayman just 6 months ago at a discount of 8-9% under MSRP (at roughly 79k euros), it's actually incredibly hard to find a lightly used one at under 95k euros (MY 22/23). On the other hand 991.2 prices continue to drop because the engine size tax and the associated insurance costs are eye watering high: just the engine tax would be about 2k euros annually (post tax increase would be more like 5k euros), and that's without factoring in the insurance costs (mandatory and/or optional one). Put that into perspective with the taxes paid on a 2.0L engine: that's a measly 45 euros annually.
A buddy of mine is looking to get a 991.2 (last one to have a truly analog dashboard), but is holding out for another 2-3 years before they can be had for peanuts.

Great video as always!!. Waiting for your new analysis with the german market data. In general the porsche brand could be said as the brand with the lowest depreciation rates in general?.
Guess the taycan is the one with highest depreciation followed by the cayenne. Thanks.

The correction in 2023 was likely due in part to the announcement of the next generation of the Boxter/Cayman going electric. Many see the Spyder/GT4 (especially manual) as one of Porsche's last great analog cars.

I love my 981 Cayman base. Hopefully one day I can afford to step up to a high spec S or GTS. I love the Boxster too. But the roof line with the roof up just isnt as tidy as the Cayman. But obviously with the roof down it looks mint.

This vid pains me. I owned a 2013 981B for 6 years and sold it in April 2020 for 60% of what I paid. 4 years later today it’s still worth more than what I sold it for with twice the miles. Given that I have bought and sold 3 911s since then which eventually led me to the 3rs, I could have kept the 981 as a daily. Biggest regret ever. Back then midengine Porsches are considered poor man alternatives to 911, wife’s cars or even “fake” Porsche. They never really held their value vs the 911s,despite being great cars. Then the 718 came around and sold horribly with the turbo, helped the 981 987 retain value coz the 718 depreciated like crazy. When they brought the 6 cylinder back with gts 4.0 and spider/gt4, that engine just didn’t sound the same and felt sterile (I had it but sold coz it didn’t feel special). But the midengine has gotten so good that they are owned more and more by enthusiasts, and this dramatic shift in value is triggered by the new EV or hybrid midengine replacement plus inflation plus the 911s have gotten more expensive than ever. The used to be bargain midengine is now the best deal that’s within everyone’s budget and the great demand really stabilized the market.…I never thought the midengines would be the best value retaining cars in this price range, esp the 981 gts which I looked forever but couldn’t find a good sample and had so settle for a 911, how crazy is that!
