    • Carolina Coops style D...
    After lots of research on chicken management best practices, we decided that we wanted to design our coop after the Carolina Coops builds. We incorporated the deep litter method, chicken level egg door and chicken ladder along with lots of ventilation and open run space.

    I've also found myself liking the Carolina Coop designs but wanted some personal modifications. Your video helped me a ton in visualizing how exactly a DiY version would work. Thank you! It looks amazing.

      Rich, Thank You, Sue decided if we where having chickens she wanted a good size coop. We spent the winter watching and looking at other designs and settled on this design. No regrets on this design for sure. It is really nice to be able to stand up inside the run etc.

    Awesome coop! Definitely gave me more ideas on how I want to build mine. What size is the door opening into the coop?

    • @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497
      @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497  Год назад

      It is around 30 inches wide, The mistake we made was making it all the way down as when the snow builds up its hard to open. We ended up shortening the door and putting a fixed 2x6 across the bottom and now it works well

    look into (LAB) lactic acidid bacteria, helps to control smell, breaks down waste faster, adds a healthy enviroment for your birds. it is even good ( safe to add to the bird feed and/ or water.. you can make it at home.

    And the Solar panels are used for the lights? is there a timer on the lights or is it activated for security or for feeding?

    • @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497
      @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497  3 года назад +3

      The Solar charge controller turns the lights on at dusk for 6 hours right now. That can be adjusted based on the length of the day. Chickens need a certain number of light hours a day to lay eggs regularly so we decided to use an old solar module we had and make it off grid

    Nice job! I'm going to build something similar. By any chance did you build it in sections and then put it all together and would you make it bigger if you could? I'm starting with 20 chickens but might expand in the future.

    • @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497
      @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497  3 года назад +1

      That is actually one spot we detoured from Carolina Coops, We made ours more conventional framing as we built it in place. Personally we would not likely go any bigger but we don't plan much more than 15-20 birds.

    Hello Sue and Ryan, I have a daughter who would like chickens, but I don't like the smell that comes with it. It seems this coop may help. What are some tips you have for cleaning the coop and keeping the smell down? Thanks in advance

    • @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497
      @aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497  3 года назад +6

      Hi Camille, the great news is that there is a lot you can do that will reduce the smell of chickens. We find that our run really does not smell at all.
      The first thing to make sure of is that you are providing enough space. The more space that they have the more the poo is spread out reducing the smell. Keep in mind that you will be adding a floor covering, so not too huge. We have 17 chickens and although our coop house is technically large enough to house more, I would not want to add many more with the run size. If you are in a cold climate make sure the coop house is small enough for the number of chickens to ensure they can stay warm.
      The second thing is to make sure that the bedding is deep in the coop. We are using wood shavings in the coop right now and that works pretty well. As the chickens poop, add a small amount of shavings about once every one to two weeks to cover up the poop. Doing this keeps it in layers and allows the microbes to start to break it all down without causing excess moisture or compacted. You can then clean it much less often and still have it remain sanitary and not smelly. You may want to try hemp bedding in the coop also, many people say its a huge improvement over the shavings.
      Third is the footing in the run, this is probably the most important thing because this should be where most of the poop is. Use a large rough wood chip(not shavings). The key is a heavy material that is slow to break down. What you want to avoid at all cost is the slime that can happen when there is too much poop, water and organic fine material. This creates an anaerobic environment and it smells BAD. By adding course wood chip you are adding a material that does not pack easily this keeps air present and allows the good bacteria and microbes to do their job. Good composting shouldn't smell and composting is really what this is.
      The last thing is encouraging your chickens to scratch and peck. Make them do the work of turning the compost that they are creating. This is really easy to do just by giving them your table scraps. Chickens can eat almost anything that we can. You'll reduce your feed bill and you will get better eggs for it. That's a double win! Throw the table scraps out in the run and they will have a great time foraging for them. Just be sure that you are not giving them more at any time than they can finish in about 2 hours. In addition they should always have access to a balanced chicken feed if they are being kept in a coop.
      Chickens are a lot of fun. They are a great starter animal to teach kids about responsibility of caring for a pet daily and they make breakfast! I hope that you give having them some extra consideration with some methods of smell reduction.
      -Sue
