crazy how you managed to build a coop that size for that cheap.. my brother and I have been making a similar $400 price range coop not nearly as big as that, will hold up to 4 chickens.
Yeah, we had a lot of used materials, leftover screws, leftover hardware cloth, and got quite a bit in the cull bin at Home Depot for 70% off. It's been a lot of work (since I waited til the last second and now have chickens that need their coop and now I'm rushing) but it's so fun too! Your coop looks AWESOME! Great job!
Outstanding! This is exactly what I am thinking about building in the next few weeks. I'm thinking of 8' x 12' but I may follow your lead and go with 6'. Thanks,
wow, really nice job on a lovely coop! Lots of great features. I think maybe the chicks' legs are too short to manage the rungs yet on the ladder. Maybe once full grown they'll manage that stride. I also wonder if they'd prefer a flat (no air spaces) plank, with foot rungs spaced at a 'chicken stride' distances. Best of luck!
Bro! Fantastic job on that coop. I’ve also started a build on a coop like this and I really like how you did a few of these things, I’ll be taking some ideas from yours and applying them to mine. Glad I found this video.
Our coop is about 21" off the ground. We tried to make it the right size to allow us to scrape droppings into a wheel barrow easily. 1st Build Video now available: ruclips.net/video/WTxk8mkEMEY/видео.html
Kids are for quality control testing. My ex used to claim I was quality control for all technology in the home for the same reason. If I didn't screw it up nobody else could!
Great job. It looks really nice and sturdy. I made my coop 5x6 with a 6ft highth in the middle and have 18 chickees in there. They huddle together. Only two months old so I'm not sure if they'll be happy in there full grown. I'm thinking of making another coop and getting rid of the roosters. Aren't they fun? I love mine. Enjoy them👌👍
Yes, pocket holes kind of. I just used a big drill bit to drill most of the way thru the 2x4, then used a long screw driver bit to put the screw into that hole.
Some hinges don't fully fold back on themselves, so they have an arc of motion that is between 180 and 270 degrees, as opposed to 360 degrees. By surface mounting the hinge so the free bracket can move between the 180º and 270º positions, and putting a wooden stop above the hinge, the coop door can only be open when the hinge is at 180 degrees, so you need to pull the wire to make the hinge flap flush with the door/wall so it can pass under/behind the stopper. If the hinge is at more than 180-190 degrees, it will hit the stopper. Hopefully that makes sense.
Very interesting. It seems you did a great Hen House and Chicken Run. Did you have a Blue Print to work from. I enjoyed watching. Thank you for sharing! What kinds of Chickens do you have? I got the kinds of Chickens that you have. You have a adorable family! Godspeed!
Excellent construction skills! The coop looks great. I also copied Carolina Coops build concepts. My regret is I didn't make my coop and run 6 ft. wide, but I also have a 20x20 pen area I'm able to let them out in so it works out, but that was definitely an after thought as I realized a 4x10 run really wasn't going to be big enough for 4 hens. Well, it would be, but I don't think their quality of life would have been as good. I may have missed it in your video, but did you add a predator apron? I did, but it's been completely unnecessary. I kept thinking the chickens would be under regular assault by animals but there hasn't been a single instance in two years. Better safe than sorry though. Again, excellent build!
No, I didn't add a predator apron. I might someday, but not now. We close them in the coop each night, and most predators are out at night around here anyway.

Hi! Your coop looks great! We are trying to build ours too like the Carolina Coop. Can I find out how much overhang you have for the roof both on the long and short sides? Thank you!
I was looking to do something very similar but I have a Question so I’m hoping you can shed some light. I see you have positioned your 2x4s on end for the perimeter of the structure. How did you secure the 2x4s to each other? Did you use a jig to do diagonal screws or what? Very cool design.. you are awesome
Sebastian Kiely it would be best to use a “pocket screw” jig to do diagonal screws like you mentioned. But I didn’t have the jig. So here is what I did: I would drill about a 1/4 inch hole 2/3s of the way thru the board, then use a really long screw driver bit to put the screw into that hole and into the next board. Does that make sense? I’ll be making a video if explaining some of this in more detail soon. Thank you for the positive comments!
The Quarter Acre Homestead yeah that makes complete sense. We have a jig and I do see this is how Carolina does theirs but I was debating doing a normal wall frame (2x4) on its side for the base and using 2x 2x4s for the structural supports. Do you see any reason other than aesthetics to do it the “Carolina” way? It looks great.. but i feel it might lack the strength of a conventional wall
@@sebastiankiely4534 I can think of two reasons the "Carolina" way might be better. One, it is more surface area for attaching the hardware cloth. Two, by putting the siding inside the framing, the 2x4 looks like trim work when you paint it. Really convenient.

So we are building your coop and some of the measurements are wrong the door for the nest box is mismeasured....its not right.. This is a very big project and very expensive building too!
Great looking coop and run. What areas of the build did you use spruce vs treated wood. I cannot decide if I want to do all treated or just treated at the bottom where it touches the dirt. Also what was your material cost. Once again, it is a very nice chicken coop and run!!
I only used treated for the boards that touch the ground. Material cost was about $450, but I had hardware cloth already and I got a lot of stuff from the discount bin at Home Depot (roofing, plywood, 2xs). Got mis-tint paint for $5 a gallon. I also used some old 2x6s I had laying around. So if I had to buy everything at regular price it would probably be closer to $800 or so.
Mike Young thank you. It is 6x16. Kind of a weird size, but I started out thinking 6 foot sections, and then realized I had two 10 foot pressure treated boards, so 10 plus 6 made 16.

Man, it is beautiful by the way what was the total foot print of yours? 6X12 or 6x18?
Mike Young thank you. It is 6x16. Kind of a weird size, but I started out thinking 6 foot sections, and then realized I had two 10 foot pressure treated boards, so 10 plus 6 made 16.
Man I hate to keep bothering you on question. Just wondering what pitch you put on your roof for your coop? I plan on breaking ground this weekend on mine. Thank you for your time.
Hi Mike, sorry for the late response. Our pitch roof is at 17 degrees.
Great job! How long is the total coop and run?

Can you build me one pretty please?
Maybe - can you pick up from Portland, OR area? I was thinking about building another one and filming the process. But I need someone to buy it from me, haha. :-)
Rule number one of chickens is DO NOT NAME THEM! We have chickens that we feed organic food but they haven’t laid an egg in 4 years. I let my daughter name them…
Oh man! I think we might take ours to an auction once they stop laying.
I love everything your ideas. Great job
Thanks so much! 😊
Great job!
