  • In this video I show the hows and whys of my newly built potters throwing wheel which I've made out of pieces of my wife's broken down treadmill and some pieced out of an old washing machine. I hope that soon enough I'll have some throwing videos where I will make a fool out of myself.

      Thank you Hans!! I've already used it, but the turn table I made of wood got distorted from the water. A friend in the UK has made me a turn table from metal, I'm waiting for it to arrive, and I'll make a video of using it as well.

    Great project nice work. You could use that larger washing machine pulley, which would also shorten belt length, to get slower speeds. Potters do most of the forming and finishing of pots at speeds of 5 to 50 rpm. Is there a minimum speed trim potentiometer on the main board. That would solve everything.

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  Год назад

      Ho man, if only that circuit had a potentiometer life would be simple, I could have just ran wires to it and connect it close to the working surface, but it's all on chips, and programming those is beyond my ability. Maybe some day I'll get a decent machine (and a lesson or two wouldn't hurt).

    Are you thinking about adding a dimmer insted of the buttons?

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  4 года назад

      Sadly this motor machanism doesn't support using a dimmer if I want the full power of it. I've tried using a dimmer with AC, but the torque in the lower speeds was too low for working.

    Neat project for the lockdown Yuval. Throwing is something I’ve often wanted to have a go at. Couple of questions, Is the motor going to have enough torque to turn the weight of wet clay & are you going to make a waterproof cover for the foot pedals and switch panel ?
    Look forward to seeing some of your families projects in the future.
    Stay safe my friend.
    Regards from the U.K.
    Geof

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  4 года назад

      Thank you Geof! The motor is five time stronger then most throwing wheels motors (they are usually a quarter horse power, this is 1.25 horse power), remember, this was taken from a treadmill, so it was made to bear and move at least one person on a moving belt. I won't make a water proof cover for the pedals, since the current running through those is minuscule, they are not directly controlling the current to the motor, and I did make a cover for the switches, splash proof.

    Fantastic project, nicely done! Your speeds are MUCH too fast. You will throw clay all over your room.You could run two belts, one to an intermediate pulley (current small pulley to large diameter intermediate pulley) then a second belt from a small intermediate pulley to the current shaft under the wheel... Very creative.

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  4 года назад

      Thank you Peter! Since I had just the one belt, and a limited number of bearings, it is what it is. When I'll be working again, soon I hope, and could afford to order some parts, I'll probably make a step down pulley like you suggested.

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  4 года назад

      5 times stronger, and can be ran more then 20 times faster then your normal throwing wheel, but at the lower speeds it still inside the normal spinning speed for this type of machine :) Nothing flew off it, yet....

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  4 года назад +2

      Yeah Mike! When I was done and told her what I used to make it from, she said "I thought you said the treadmill was broken", to which I replied "It was, but a different piece of it was broken"... that was enough to calm her down ;) It's fast, but it's slow enough if you know what you're doing, which I don't, but I'm a quick study...
