This design doesn't really take into account a compound miter cut. It's not something I do often, so I didn't build it in. If you need that, it's just a matter of enlarging the center section a bit and changing the shroud to allow for that motion.

    • @red_freckle
      @red_freckle 7 лет назад +8

In truth it's not just compound bevel cuts you've made impossible with this set up but any regular bevel cut. For me that would be ruling out countless cuts that the saw should be capable of. It's a little late now but Dewalt saws are super easy to connect directly to dust collection systems, no shroud necessary.

One of my workshops is entirely made out of wood. From the floors to the walls to the benches and standing jigs.
It looks like a beautiful craft workshop and it is primarily what clients see when visiting through the windows of the office.
My other workshops are basic and put together with functional bits that do not look good at all. The only people that see them is the employees and myself.

I highly reccomend NOT putting an extra long fence on your miter saw station. If your board is warped, it can increase how far it gets held out from the actual fence on your saw. This increases the risk of a nasty pinch. It also serves no real purpose nor does it increase functionality in any way that can't be done with another method.

Here is a tip you might want to try. In my shop I made a long table that would cut 16 foot lumber on one side and 8 feet on the other. It was actually a 12 inch radial are saw. Here is the tip. After I sanded the table to a really nice finish, I measured from the. saw blade 90 degrees and against the fence and drew a scale of a ruler down to a 16th of an inch. I made it 4 feet on the left side and two feet on the right side. After testing the cuts, they were perfect. I then painted the entire table and over the top of the scaled ruler which I did in pencil with two coats of polyurethane. I worked really great for a long time and it looked cool too. JS

Great video Bob! I plan to make something like this soon, and will use this video as inspiration. I think I would make the dust panel modular using additional panels and magnets so that for 90 degree cross cuts I can cover more of the open space, and then move the panels as needed for miter and bevel cuts. This would give you increased dust collection while the panels are in place. Jay Bates did something similar with his miter saw station recently.

For sure it will make a lot of noise... especially when you use a hand planer with a 1" to 1.5" hose attached to the planer to pick up the wood chips. Nice video, by the way!

I wish I had proper power tools. I just have a drill and a circular saw. I made my brother a platform bed last weekend because his new bed has a box, not a box frame. It was ridiculous, I drew a straight line, clamped a board right on the line, and then cut crooked in two dimensions. The frame is shameful.

And by the way, a poor carpenter probably has shitty tools. If you like wood working, and you can afford nice tools, I recommend it. A good table saw and chop saw makes your woodworking life a whole lot better. Good luck. I wish you the best. Be safe.

Stop blocks should never be square as it can create a binding suface to the saw blade which can be very dangerous. A stop block should come to a point and let the fence keep the work perpendicular to the blade.

First, love the videos!! great work!!
I'm watching the build for the miter saw station. How difficult would it be to make the center section where the miter saw goes, removable? I would like to be able to switch out my miter saw with my table saw. I would build a different "mount" for each. The bench would also be in two different parts. Last, I would make all four sections to be on wheels. I don't have a lot of room and would need to move the workbench out of the way so I can park my motorcycle in a different section for the winter...
    Thoughts / ideas?
    Thanks again,
    Dan

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 5 лет назад

      +Daniel d
You would need to engineer your table so that you can also adjust the height because the table saw is probably taller than the mitre saw. SO when you put the table saw in the surfaces will not match.
Easiest way to do that would be to have to preset height adjustments so that you can switch between one and the other on demand.
One of the trickiest things you have to deal with is keeping the mitre saw square against the back fences everytime you change it out and back again.
You probably are going to need to have fences that are detachable.
All of this sounds complex I know but you can use t tracks that are recessed that allow you to attached the fence or detatch it with a simple know like the one he has on his mitre station.

I'm pretty much a retired newbie. I like your dust box. It looks like you can't make 45°bevels. How do you do that. Thanks.

I bought the digital plans and made this miter saw station. I made it longer on the left side for my situation. Great plans and video work well together. I ended up using some dowels on some joints as I was not getting very strong joints with my pocket screw jig. A pocket hole jig specific for 2X4 material would have done the trick. But I had dowels handy. Thanks!

+UC6x7GwJxuoABSosgVXDYtTw Why did you choose a non-sliding miter saw? My guesses are that the sliding mechanism is too long for the table, or sliding causes non-straight cuts?

Hey, really cool. Copied it today without the dust collector box due to my saw being a slide saw. Question: Did you build the fences 48" or 36" I cannot tell in the vid. My left side came out to 46" and the right 35. I bought 36" T track but not sure if I should exchange them for the 48 or just cut the fences down to 36. Will 36" be enough. Thank you. Patrick

So when are pocket screws not up for the job? can't think of to many applications that would revive more stress than shop furniture

just a thought, you could make the dust guard, out of clear vinyl from a fabric store and cut slits in it and staple it at the top, kind of like the flaps you walk through to get into a cooler at a beer store...

Great video, cool table. Since you "like to make things," I have a challenge for you, should you be willing to accept it... I'm no woodworker, but I do lots of diy stuff on my off time, but there's still two more things I really need (well, there's a lot of things, but these are top of my list), a router table and a table saw. I've seen a lot of videos for building your own of each, or even a combo table, with the table saw using a circular saw. I do have a corded circular saw I don't use (I stick to my cordless), but I was thinking of something a little better... I also have a miter saw I'm not using (purchased a nice sliding miter saw), and I don't mind taking it apart.. I was thinking it would be cool to break it down and use it to build a table saw that works more like a traditional table, with the ability to raise and lower the blade, as well as angle it. Do you think you could come up with a design for that, that is sturdy, durable and customizable, but doesn't break the bank?

What size nail do you use? I just got my nailer and I got 16 and 18 gauge. What should I use for 1) 3/4 plywood, 2) 1/2 plywood. 3) 2x4? Thanks.

I don't know if you have an air quality sensor like Matthias, but that would really be interesting to test dust reduction. I saw some idea one time I can't find it anymore on a video, where a guy had clear plastic/vinyl strips sort of like what they might have in a grocery store cooler, used line a curtain. I used strips of clear vinyl carpet Runner, four to five bucks at Walmart. So far it seems to work great at containing the Dust.

Bob! Use your CNC to make a grate for the dust collection ports, its always scary to hear a chunk of wood tumbling through the impellers. Also, make yourself a rolling scrap bin to put under one of the wings!

Yup compound isn't important...until it is. Also I quickly learned the wing fences are a very bad idea. They work great for perfect straight wood, but I've never run into that wood. Any bow will make the cut of the actual degree setting. 90 becomes + or - whatever pushes off the wings. You really only want the fence on the saw itself and nothing to interfere with wherever the bow needs to go.
IMO this design is kind of like my 2nd station design. I'm on #6 and today had to cut a chunk out because turning to 45 hit my station. Always seems like some improvement is needed.

You might want to re-look at your dimensions on the first sheet on your plans. A, B, and C, show 33". Then, you show D @ 18". 33" and 18" is 51". You show having extra board left over. If someone was to use the plans exactly as is, you need 3 sheets of plywood, not 2.

You do great work. Not to be critical, and I know it is rough construction, but when cutting new 2x4’s for butt joints or in your case pocket hole butt joints - it is good practice to ‘square up/trim the end of the 2x4.
This does two things: 1. Simply stated, it brings any questionable edge to square. 2. It removes the rough saw face and staple/tag.
It’s not critical, but someone pointed it out to me on my last project and I have been ‘true-ing’ my rough edges ever since.
Great video - and excellent use of pocket holes joinery!

Great video, good ideas for a beginner/expandable miter table. My only gripe is the word you said repeatedly at the end..."ruler". As my shop teacher used to go off about, "Stalin was a ruler, Hitler was a ruler, that is a scale!" Or measuring tape would also be acceptable. Just my peeve, but again, good job on a simple, sturdy table with dust collection. I also noticed that you didn't lay the saw for 45° cuts. I guess if you don't use your miter saw for miter work, only for straight cuts that is fine. I watched someone who held the face of the box with magnets to make it easily removable.

I'd like to buy a Radial Arm Saw for the sole purpose of using a dado blade on it, since the Dewalt DW745 cannot(?) use one.
Do you think that a mitre saw can have a dado blade?
    Kind Regards
