  • We’ll look for clues to put a date on this photo of the fountain in front of the old City Hall, and investigate a few other pieces of Hong Kong history along the way.

A most enjoyable video. I really appreciate your historical photos and narratives. My own photos of Hong Kong only go back to Blue Funnel ships in the Taikoo drydock in early 1970s. And memories of riding the tram to Wan Chai for evening 'entertainments'.

Thanks Richard, glad to hear you're enjoying them. We've got some photos of Taikoo at gwulo.com/node/2338/photos but not many from the 1970s, so if you've got any you can share then please upload them to Gwulo!

@Gwulo Thank you. I will try to do that. I also showed them to Dr. Davies' assistants at the Maritime Museum. Your photos in the link are of much more historical value than mine. The ones of China Nav (Swire) ships built there in the 50s are very nostalgic, as I can remember the ships. I sailed in Blue Funnel, and later Indo China Steam Nav (Jardines). As a young junior officer in Blue Flue, I remember sailing with a cadet whose father worked for Taikoo dock, and visiting his home at the staff quarters overlooking the dock and airport runway.

Could those lions have modelled for the nearby but later HSBC pride - the pose seems familiar!

Good point - HSBC's managers would have walked past the fountain's lions every day, so maybe they had an influence.
