  • This talk shows how the war changed Hong Kong, using a selection of photos from the 1930s-50s.
    It is a re-recording of a talk I presented at the Royal Geographical Society's Gala Dinner in October 2022.

    It's interesting to note that, even though the Japanese had surrendered, there were holdouts who resisted. British troops, bolstered by Canadians, fought small battles throughout the city to defeat these Japanese troops. This needs to be acknowledged and not ignored or glossed over. Although most Japanese troops were willing to surrender at this point, there were some who wanted to carry on the fight.

    Thanks for sharing these historical pictures! I always see those pillboxes, Japanese caves and military stones when I hike along trails around HK Island.
