1909 Panorama of Kowloon, Victoria Harbour, and the north shore of Hong Kong Island
This panorama is so sharp that we can see details as far away as Lai Chi Kok, even though the photographer took the photos from mid-levels on Hong Kong island. We’ll use a high-resolution scan of the panorama to explore what was happening in Kowloon and Hong Kong in 1909.

I’ve scanned all the parts that we flattened in the previous video, and reassembled the full panorama. In this video I show the finished result, introduce a surprise bonus, then explore the panorama’s details. The final image is over 500 megapixels in size, so there’s lots to see! If you'd like to see more photos or information about the places I mention, please use these links: 01:25 Roman Cat...
How to safely unroll brittle old photos, demonstrated with a Hong Kong panorama taken in 1909
Просмотров 55128 дней назад
Old photo paper often becomes hard and brittle, and I recently received a pair of 1909 panorama photos with exactly that problem. As they’d been kept tightly rolled, if I tried to unroll them I’d likely crack the paper. In this video I’ll show how I first softened the photos’ paper and restored its flexibility, then was able to safely unroll the photos. The whole process took several days, but ...

Lucky dip - a bundle of old Hong Kong photos from eBay

I bought these recently - they were sold in one batch, and I guess they're what was left over from various albums after the seller had sold all the better photos. Let's see if any of them have a story to tell.
Who called Hong Kong 'home' in these 1880s-1950s photos?
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.7 месяцев назад
David shows us photos of the wide variety of people who’ve lived in Hong Kong - we’ll see barbers, cobblers, compradores, hawkers, soldiers, sailors, Scottish golfers, and more! The photos were originally taken in Hong Kong between the 1880s and the 1950s, and have been scanned at high resolution so David can zoom in to show us their hidden details. He’ll use these clues to explain the stories ...

Thank you so much for these videos David, as much as I think I know from the thousands of photographs on your website, these video tutorials really give those final details that I miss. Heading to HK again in January, kind of sad to know that you’re not there anymore. I have 11 days to immerse myself in these old photographs and place them in today’s world.
great stuff, thanks david.
Magnificent work, thank you.
Thank you David :-)
Great work David- many thanks.
Proudly showing memories of your kind's colonisation eh?
I don't think so- David is just showing us a fascinating piece of history.
A RUclips channel is the way to go David! I think you’ll get a lot of interest by sharing on this platform. For those that don’t know, there is a website by the same name as the channel that has been gathering historical pictures from Hong Kong for years. Please check it out and support the author by purchasing his books. It’s well worth it for anyone interested in the city’s history.
I’m always wondering back in the old days, what technology they had and who instructed them to build those houses on the hill top.
thx for sharing old images of HK
so this must be looking from Kowloon side by the KCR railway station to Hong Kong side but no view of Kellet Island or Jardines Lookout that I remember watching being demolished from Leighton Hill before the Causeway Bay Typhoon shelter was built t- hat we used to pass going to Quarry Bay School in Govt Motor Pool green army lorries
The photographer was over on Hong Kong side to take this photo, standing somewhere near the end of Whitfield Road where it reached the harbour. That explains why we can't see Kellett Island, which is out of sight to the right.
Hi, what a find, it will be amazing to see what the final images look like after scanning. I was wondering if you are going to see about sorting out the damaged areas in the final scans. I have just attended (online) the latest Adobe Max conference, where they showed off a lot of their new AI based tools for Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. I have looked at these in my latest Adobe apps, and they have a made a great difference to a number of my images. I lived on Stonecutters Island for two year back in the early 70's and will be trying out the AI tools on some of them.
That's amazing! Thank you for showing this to us!
thanks for sharing, Dave....
It's great to see 1909 Hong Kong in such gorgeous details. Look forward to reading about interesting stories in future issues of Gwulo.

Bailey's Shipyard, To Kwa Wan in the first photo?
Very close to there, but just a little bit to the North, as mentioned in the newspapers: gwulo.com/media/49787
This is excellent, thank you. I look forward to the next installment!
Thank you Gwulo

Superb video full of historical interest ,thank you for sharing with the wider world
A very nice description of some of the territory of Hong Kong's important features.
Wow 👍🏻👍🏻
Hi from HK. Miss your weekly newsletter about HK~
Greetings from Hong Kong! 😊
It's interesting to note that, even though the Japanese had surrendered, there were holdouts who resisted. British troops, bolstered by Canadians, fought small battles throughout the city to defeat these Japanese troops. This needs to be acknowledged and not ignored or glossed over. Although most Japanese troops were willing to surrender at this point, there were some who wanted to carry on the fight.
Where is this ? ❤
It's in Sai Ying Pun, though it looks different now: www.google.com/search?q=yu+lok+lane+%E9%A6%99%E6%B8%AF&oq=yu+lok+lane&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqCAgBEAAYFhgeMgkIABBFGDkYgAQyCAgBEAAYFhgeMgoIAhAAGIAEGKIEMgoIAxAAGIAEGKIEMgoIBBAAGIAEGKIEMgoIBRAAGIAEGKIEMgYIBhBFGD3SAQg1NTEwajBqN6gCALACAA&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Wonderful presentation ! Thank you so much ❤
Interesting but really sad that the British gave away Hong Kong to the devil and just departed, and add that to what is going in London with Islam taking over, all by design by the few and their insane politics.
Very interesting
wow this is interesting
Thank you very much - wonderful.
Great
invaluable info! I had no idea about the air shelters! and want to visit the cameron mansions now!!any inscription there do you think?

Suggest if it the photo belongs to e.g. the decade of 1960-1969, then put it as 1960s. For the photo in year 1960, then put it as 1960-01-01. Otherwise if you have a photo of a definite year in 1960, it will show it as in any year between 60 and 69.
Hi Andrew, after the upgrade the user will be able to specify: A - decade, eg 1960s, or B - year, eg 1960, or C - date, eg 3 Mar 1960 Then when we search we can view: 1 - Photos from the 1960s: A, B, & C 2 - Photos from 1960: B & C 3 - Photos from 3 Mar 1960: C Will that solve the problem you described?
Thanks for this! A great system!
Great!
