You did the test wrong. This should be a blind test. You can't tell them what's in the bait pile or they'll always go to the corn, you gotta switch the signs and see if they'll still eat from the "corn" pile.
Fun stuff. Like involving the kids and listening to their comments! I'll use the corn to bring the deer to the oats. 9x the protein in oats gives it the edge for nutrition. Corn has the edge for attraction.
@thomaschandler4831 thank you for the kind words! I’m still a work in progress, but thankfully the boys show their dad some grace when I have my moments.
Corn seed and oat seed is one thing. Grow the two plants, side by side, and the oats will be much more attractive, when they are young. Also, the corn is pure carbohydrates...it isn't much better for deer than it is for people. Put an equal amount of chestnuts next to the corn and oats, if you want to see what deer REALLY like, and it's something good for them.
Oats are supposed to be better (healthier) for the as the weather gets colder. Because the high carbohydrates and low fiber of the corn do not let the deer's digestive system adapt to the low nutrition of the natural vegetation.
On the property I hunt I’ve tried corn, fortified cotton seed and rice bran. I haven’t seen much of a difference in preference, the deer eat it all up! I buy whatever is available and cheapest!
If you want bucks with big rack, you'll train them to eat soybeans ;) We have so many acorns, I've watched bucks walk past corn to eat white oak acorns.
I planted two food plots side by side. In the first, Buck Forage Oats. In the second, Five Way, which is a blend of wheat, oats, turnip, chicory & white clover. The clear winner was the Five Way.
You need to cull out about 4 bucks. You do have one mature buck with a thick large body thats got all those other bucks in check.Did you happen to notice what moon phase you did this on?
I was shocked to see this many bucks. We normally don’t see that many. I didn’t notice the moon phase. But man that one was all puffed up and definitely had everything in submission mode.
WE don`t harvest corn up here in Saskatchewan, but I knew they would prefer corn over oats. I feed oats but only if I can`t get wheat. Maybe you could do a corn VS wheat test
Are the deer in that area familiar with oats? I know up in Alberta if you throw corn out the deer tend to be wary of it because they're not familiar with it. On the other hand, they like alfalfa and oats up there because it's what they know and are familiar with.
No they aren’t familiar with oats around here. Only reason why they’d know corn is a few feeders. We only have wheat and cotton around our area in western Oklahoma.
I doubt it. They seem to eat a little bit of everything to fulfill their diet needs and would continue to eat the pears. It’s amazing how the deer leave piles of food to scavenge for other food.
Well done boys. It might be time dependent and even location dependent. I believe the oats are actually "better" food for the deer. If the deer are in need of a nutrient in oats then they will likely be drawn to it. I have seen deer eat acorns on the ground at the edge of a cut alfalfa field then graze/browse through the alfalfa to a cut corn field and eat for a bit then work over to a standing bean field eat for a bit and move on. But these deer of yours clearly preferred the corn at the time you observed them. How did you boys do this year? Did you get any of those nice buck.?
I think time dependent is a good observation. It’s interesting how deer won’t gorge themselves and leave food supply behind. Definitely not like our cattle.
Is it possible they didn't eat as much oats because they have never seen or ate it? I've always wondered what would happen if you put out acorns in an area where there had never been any before
Try those cheap ass Cheese-It things in the two gallon poly tub from the dollar store. Deer lose their shit over them. Same with Fried Chicken. I'd toss the bones from fried chicken to the deer and they literally come running - - - Running.
In the northeast, outside of industrial ag regions, corn will kill deer in the winter. Oats won't, so there is that. Hay will kill deer pretty quick too
@@BooneBoys no, it's deer biology. Stomach bacteria change with the browse and as the browse gets less sugarlater in the year, the bacteria switch to woody browse. If you then give them corn they will have trouble digesting it, and it will kill them even. Look up a condition called acidosis.
I could see how people might see it that way. I guess it’s all about time and location. I always looked at it like fishing with a bare hook or putting bait on a hook. If you have all the time in the world you’ll eventually get on with a hook and probably faster if the water is loaded with fish. Same thing deer hunting. If you are in open country you might never have an animal within a mile of where you have property to hunt if there isn’t anything to bring them close by. I appreciate the folks though that take the extra effort to do it without baiting or modern electronics/game cameras I would say is even more impressive. If somebody doesn’t believe in baiting I would think they would feel the same way about a game camera.
It seems to me they naturally limit themselves. It’s amazing how they might nibble for a few seconds and just move on. One would think they would be aggressive over an easy food supply, but definitely not where we are at anyways.

@thomaschandler4831 thank you for the kind words! I’m still a work in progress, but thankfully the boys show their dad some grace when I have my moments.
Corn having a larger kernel will be more attractive. If planted oats were growing next to planted corn, I believe the oats would be preferred.
The oats seem to be easier to chew up, but I’m guessing the taste is that much of a difference.
Where I’m from plated oats don’t make it to seed
@@tomstone3645 because they are preferred.
They are after the fat content in the corn
@@Highstranger951 corn and oats have similar fat content. Oats have a higher protein content, but corn has more carbs and less fiber.

@charleywalker2982 thank you! And we have some more planned.
Mix crystallized molasses, rolled oats and cracked corn and you won't be able to chase the deer away.
very cool and informative video thanks!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching.
I’m guessing oats are easier to chew and digest for deer.
I would think so too, but I’m sure corn is way sweeter to them and only using oats for the nutritional value.

Corn.
They love Yellow acorns where I hunt😂
Can I hunt your property? Lol. You have great deer. Interesting video. Thanks for posting.
lol. If you want to see what it’s normally like watch out corn and acorn video. All does and raccoons! 😂
I think they'll go for the oats before the corn Lefty
I’m surprised. I thought the animals would really like the oats.
Me too. Even though we don’t have corn fields around here, corn is still king to the deer.
Awesome experiment fellas 🦌

I'm putting out both. Lasts longer.
I like that idea.
WE don`t harvest corn up here in Saskatchewan, but I knew they would prefer corn over oats. I feed oats but only if I can`t get wheat. Maybe you could do a corn VS wheat test
Wheat is primarily what we have here in western Oklahoma. I’ve seen wheat pretty much get eaten by birds and coons, but corn seems to be the go to.
Temperature has a lot to do with it. When it's cold, they'll go for the corn before anything else. Apples seem to work better in milder temperatures.
Try rye! In central SK seems to work just fine and you can buy it from a farmer rather a bagged product from a hunting store.
back in the day in arizona, i used cotton seed ...
I know cattle will eat cotton seed.

It seems corn rules around us. No corn fields for miles and miles.
Hadn’t Never fed oats but here in south Alabama they love rice brand plain but peanut flavored better🦌🦌🦌🦌
Need to one with corn vs soy beans
I think that is going to be the next one!
Need to move the sign back, it’s making them a little nervous..
They seem to creep up on the piles, I’m sure moving signs back would help a lot.
I think what smell the deer know might be a factor deer eat in the wild what is available and learn that scent
I think you’re probably right. Doing a peanut test now, it will be interesting to see final videos when they are done.
It took them a few years, but they clean up my pears now. Maybe a corn feeder would save my pears?

I wonder if the deer are just used to eating corn and have acquired a preference based on habit.
I think that could be part of it. Maybe it’s the time of the year too?
They like legumes and forbs the most.
No doubt. Not many of that around the arid part of western Oklahoma. I’ve seen them eating cedar tree berries. lol.
corn has higher sugar content i think so i am guessing corn before watching the video
I think corn
Cool video. Try sweet potatoes vs ?
Oats
The deer at my feeders would not touch Oates after 2 years being there
I'm guessing corn, but I have had people tell me oats is better in the early season.
It would be interesting to see if those people are right and it changed in the spring.
You should try one with grapes and apples
Great video. Would love to know how many days it took for the corn to be finished off.
It took several weeks to finish off the corn. The coons are the ones that demolish the pile. The deer just pick at it and move on.
Try Sorghum
Try corn vs black sunflower seeds
I feel like you don’t need the signs. I’m not sure the deer can read.
Now switch the signs and see which one they prefer.
lol. Or maybe in Spanish.
I have success with oats mixed Canola
I’ve never fed Canola. Pretty small seed though, we have canola fields around in western Oklahoma.
Ots
Oats it's softer
What about soy beans, peanuts or acorns?
I've got peanuts and corn out right now. We will pull the card in a month.
If you live where I live in Mississippi all the corn and oats would be gone in one night- HOGS. Be thankful you don’t have them!
@jameswatson4110 no doubt! I’ve hear of sightings within 6 miles, but they haven’t made it here yet.
Where I come from deer like watermelons. They will eat corn or oats, but they will annihilate a watermelon field.
Corn has more sugars and oils.

Did you have any luck? It’s been tough lately to get on school’s. Maybe it’s an early early bite.

Sweet potatoes next
How about sunflower seeds and corn

Probably corn
Oats better for them ! Corn contains gylsomate .
Is it possible they didn't eat as much oats because they have never seen or ate it? I've always wondered what would happen if you put out acorns in an area where there had never been any before
Could be. We do have feeders we occasionally turn on but we are in almost strictly wheat and cotton country out where we are at.
Its 100% corn. The deer where I am will walk right over the oats. Everytime. Its a last resort for them
The corn is sweeter
Mix corn & oats together
I think that would be a good mix
Soybeans in a feeder is better than corn. One third more expensive though..
I’ve never tried it in a feeder.
Should try soybeans and corn and see what they like
What kind of camera?
Reolink Trackmix LTE it’s for home security but works great.
Try rice bran vs corn
We need to try that! Gonna make it happen
When feeding deer one must be careful not to feed them to much corn, oats what ever a day they can die with a full belly of corn oats
I would think they’d regulate themselves. They seem to naturally crave a variety in their diet.
