  • Realized I had a printer sitting idle for over a year, in a room with some ambient light, decided to test something I had been wondering about...

On Dennis Wang's Channel since he started using the Chitu systems UV Light Meter he has made a few tests. With the recent review of the new Sonic Mini 8KS printer he tested the covers of his printers how much UV light from a UV lamp they let in. The brown/smoked one in the Sonic Mini 4k let in half the light, a known problem with it, while the orange cover from the 8K and yellow from 8KS let in zero UV light.

Thanks for the vid. I havent done any resin printing in over a year. I at least a couple hundred dollars of resin sitting in a closet that hasnt been opened. all the manufactures say that resin is only good for a year so I was worried none of it would be any good but I guess now I know it will be fine.

Great to see you back. I just recently bought a Mars 2 Pro (for like $150 on sale, I guess it's because of their new releases) and I've watched a lot of your older videos about slicing and supporting and fixing sliced files before printing.

  • @ATOMTAYLOR

I did the same thing, but it only sat there for 6 months. It was clear green resin and all the colour sank to the bottom. Still worked perfectly. Clearly illustrates the fact that you can just leave resin in the vat.

Also, yeah you can leave that stuff out for a while, far longer than manufacturer's suggest or recommend. Cool test, longest I have left stuff out was about 2 months, but 1 year is epic, and cool to see that it works!

I had Anycubic's Grey Eco Resin sitting in the vat in my basement over the winter, in under 10 degrees Celsius. No problems printing with it after a good stir once the temperature started rising in the basement again. I've also been printing with that resin without problems down to 13-14 degrees Celsius.

i leave my resin in the vat most of the time.... and have left it for multiple months, maybe even a year, and i did not have any problems printing, but stirring the pigment back into it was 20x as difficult..... all the pigment had settled into the bottom, and became really thick, it took a while to get it to separate, but it eventually did, and spread back out like normal. I did however notice, when i changed colors, there was still pigment in the crack between the plastic film, and the vat frame, which couldnt be stirred back in due to its location, and i had to clean that out, more so then normal as well.

My Saturn, with the red cover, and an additional cloth over that, sat for about a year.
I pulled out the vat to check it out and discovered that the the resin at first glance, appeared to be fine.
So I decided to empty the vat for a general inspection and cleanup of the vat and the FEP membrane. I poured all the liquid out into a temporary, opaque, container.
When all the liquid was poured out I discovered that there was a perfectly flat, single layer (50microns?) of cured resin (I'm guessing... but it was Very thin) adhered to the FEP.
Getting it cleaned off proved to be, well, problematic. I ended up deforming the membrane, and so opted to just roll with it and replace the membrane.
Odd that the cured layer would be at the bottom, and not on the surface.
The printer has been unplugged the whole time, so I can't see how the display could have accidentall illuminated, and cured a layer...
Anyway, that's my (rather lengthy) story.
    Cheers!

I actually have one to try soon thats been in it for quite some time lol im sure you have countless vats and printers nowadays so maybe a follow up video could be testing different types/brands of resin

I had read somewhere that resin had a shelf life of 6 months? I'm new to resin printing so I have no idea if that's true or not. Good to know this worked still after a year.

    • @lishathorne
      @lishathorne Год назад

Depends on company it seems, my elegoo resin seems to work fine even after a long time on shelf, my clear resin from another company made a mess of one of my vats

I've always heard of shelf life with the resins but haven't encountered any problems myself. I just used 2 resins last year that were from 2018 or 2019 and they both worked. I also used some elegoo resin twice that sat in the vat for a year+. I'm really curious if shelf life correlates to brands, types or colors

See, when I did this, the vat leaked, badly. So be careful. My Qidi 8.9 Mono still works, so that's great, but I had to replace the magnetic build plate, as it fused as I had left some prints on the build plate. (I wasn't able to access the area it was held in, and forgot that there *was* a print, until I was able to clean the room enough to get to it, that is...)

  • @Emtbtoday

How was the screen? When you took vat out? Normally after 4 or 5 days you get that smudging from the fep going soft and resin separation I've seen it effect detail this screen smudge like you have drawing on a tablet and leaving a palm print on the screen! This must have been OK or did you wipe it clean first? I'd be interested to know about that.

I'm curious of the brand, type and color? I have resins from 2018 or 2019 that I used some just last year that worked fine. Knowing it was old I I shook it up like normal, then shook the hell out of it. I let it settle a little bit and then shook it up again for good measure. It ended up printing fine though. One bottle was opened already and one new. One elegoo gray and one anycubic green from the og photon. Also had resin that sat undisturbed in the vat for a year+ twice that work after simply mixing it up inside the vat. The printers are in an enclosure and don't see any sunlight and it's also airtight so that could play a part in it I suppose
