- Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi did not enjoy this speech.
I was invited to debate her at the Oxford Union on Thursday 25th April 2024.
The motion was "Populism Is a Threat To Democracy". She argued in favour of the motion. I took the opposition.
It is not populism that is the threat. The real threat comes from the elites.

It is grounds for prison time after a criminal conviction. Also, there are law enforcement officials, who apparently aren't doing their job, by not investigating and prosecuting these insider trading allegations. That is also illegal.

Democracy is a laughable idea for a country as large as the U.S. and the idea that January 6th was an insurrection is utterly Laughable.
It’s auto destructive because it’s such a flawed system for an otherwise selfish, divided people. For democracy to function it would have to be a largely ethnocentric society and even then it will always end in collapse. Government is a necessary evil, and it must always be chained down or it will always result in chaos, under one ruler, or thousands.
It's a testament to weak human minds that people believe it... despite all the video evidence of cops sauntering inside the hallways bored as 'insurrectionists' take pictures like polite tourists, footage of protesters being let in - waves in even, and the infamous shaman being led into the chamber.
The representative constitutional republic arose out of necessity when communication was limited and transportation was slow. People lived in seclusion and isolation. The reference to the size of the country is incorrect and false in today's modern age. With modern means of transportation and today's instant communication (internet, TV, etc.), information sharing and independent orientation possibilities, constitutional semi-direct democracy is the next step in America's development. It is better to have millions voting on issues than to have a small elite in Congress. Besides, a semi-direct system is not a total direct democracy.
Your purely representative constitutional republic does not work. The semi-direct democracy model is functional. The American model is false and illusory! No one should trust the system based on political parties alone! It's not good that every four years you get a day when "you decide". Otherwise, he has no right to intervene in decision-making processes, he has no right to participate. Did you take part in shaping tax policy and vote on tax policy? Did you participate in the compilation of the budget and the voting of the budget? etc. etc. No? Then you don't participate in anything, you just vote for the people who cheat anyway at long intervals. We like to talk about democracy, when in fact there are hardly any real ones. Choosing someone to make a decision for me is completely different from making my own decision. We only decide on "names", not cases. Perhaps only Switzerland is close to true democracy, where people vote on matters. The semi-direct democracy model (the Swiss model) is TRUE democracy, the exclusively indirect, representative model is a FALSE (elitist, oligarchic and corrupt) "democracy"!
You do not realize that the real source of the problem is the purely representative system and the free mandate system in which the politicians are not under constant voter control. Of course, politicians take advantage of this. I support the semi-direct democracy model because it represents the future. Semi-direct democracy can work under the right conditions. But you must have a secure referendum/election system that you can trust. With high-quality public education in which they teach how the monetary system and economy work, they also teach the constitution and civil rights and raise self-aware citizens.
This political model is the real and final solution to the problems of elitism, oligarchism and corruption!
Semi-direct participatory democracy is simply and concisely a democratic social model in which the people exercise power directly and leave only a part of public affairs to elected representatives. In a political sense, participation means joint decision-making, joint management of public affairs, and the fact that the individual has a direct say in the decision-making that affects him. In a democracy based on semi-direct participation, all members of the community can personally participate in the direct decision of public affairs. In order to exercise this, the legal institution of the People's Assembly and referendum is necessary.
All members of the community can appear at the People's Assembly and have the same rights:
the. Everyone has the right to make agenda proposals.
b. Everyone has an equal vote.
c. Everyone has the right and the opportunity to learn from the decisions made together, to be informed about them, and to find out about the agenda in time before the decisions are made.
In many cases, the legal institution of the referendum provides an opportunity to compensate for the errors of the representation system or can initiate a new political decision-making process.
Semi-direct participatory democracy offers a solution to the democratic deficit of the currently existing purely representative system, the corruption of representatives, the interweaving of political elites with the financial and economic elite (oligarchy, deep state),
to the mode of operation of political decision-making that focuses on the parties' short-term electoral interests,
and the exclusion of citizens from the right to have a real say.
In this system, the voters keep the representatives under constant control (limited mandate system and not free mandate!) and they can recall and replace them in case of representation contrary to their interests or suspicion of a crime (for example, corruption!). In other words, the representatives do not separate themselves from the voters after the elections!
We can safely say that the politics that shape our lives are more important than leaving it to predominantly professional politicians - politics is the business of all of us, always and everywhere. In order to become a politically mature and understanding, responsible (state) citizen, we all need continuous training and practice. The tools, institutions and processes of direct democracy provide a training ground for this.
In Switzerland, frequent local and national referendums, as well as the ease with which they can be initiated, ensure the continuous possibility of political participation, even Russia has introduced a system of citizens' initiatives based on electronic signature collections, and Iceland has created a new constitution on a participatory basis since 2010. Perhaps the most mentioned example on the subject is the city of Porto Alegre in Brazil, with more than one million people, which since 1989 has been successfully using what the population calls community administration, the central element of which is the technique of participatory budgeting. "Participatory budgeting, simply put, is nothing more than the determination of the composition and proportions of the settlement budget and the control of its operation through an open and transparent discussion and planning process that is repeated annually for all residents." The Porto Alegre model found more than a hundred followers throughout Latin America, but it was also adopted by European municipalities.
Broad, semi-direct participatory democracy works perfectly, and it would never give office or dignity to people who are not worthy of it, and who are only hungry for money and power. In essence, semi-direct participatory democracy means pure, perfect democracy.

@antiglobalist8229 Direct democracy does not work. It leads to geographical and political stratification that results in conflict. Im an American. My state represents me. My vote ensures that my state reflects my values. Direct democracy is at play in selecting my local leaders and state leaders. On a national scale it means putting power in the hands of California and New York and excluding everyone else. I don't want to live under the boot of New Yorkers and Coastal Californians. I don't want to live like them. I don't want to live under their rule. And my fellow Americans in 2/3s of US states don't want to live under the rule of coastal cities.
It would lead to war. Direct democracy creates a city-state system and inevitably leads to the minority in conflict with the majority.

@@panzer00 Looking past the fact that political positions were never meant to be careers. Why would that be a bad thing? Also, I disagree that bills wouldn't get passed. The bill to hand over billions of our tax dollars to Ukraine took less than a week. Surely if it is important enough to the corruption that has become our government, they will always find an expedient way to pass these things.
The politicians aren't as big of a problem as the unelectred beurocrats that oversee regulation of the private sector. You'll notice they were chubbier or lanky looking. That observation can also be applied to this summer's Olympics. Most people nowadays would be shocked to know that Olympians were "run of the mill or average people" (i.e. a secretary or a steel mill worker could enter and even get gold). Even amateur radio feels like its gravitating towards being a career instead of just Joe/Jane average talking with each other. Having genuine fun and enjoyment. Which is another observation. Another personal observation was looking for a job in a career fair back in 2013 and being shocked that a political protest booth was present between an air force and a welder booth. What I'm getting at is that this is not only a politician's fault. They are somewhat just filling a role they were allowed to be given. The people who run it, the voters and the public at large, are ultimately responsible. This former Speaker as well as all other politicians perfectly represent where they come from and what their voters value the most. And that would be the decades long belief in "get rich quick" and "looking pretty/handsome/presentable to a camera" ideals. Instead of hard work, common sense, and actual intelligence. Corruption is just a symptom of a facade we erected decades ago and some continue to maintain and stand up for. Because God forbid people start being genuine and honest with themselves. No, everything must be 100% serious, robotic, and scripted to look picture perfect. Looking in particular at those who made professions and careers out of things anyone could do the norm. Its sad really. Luckily this new wave of populism is a backlash against all that. There is a reason why 2016 happened after all.
