Not a book suggestion (sorry), but Peter Jackson's documentary, "They Shall Not Grow Old," is an astonishing look at the WWI experience. It's barely about the fighting and predominantly about the life of soldiers before and after combat, including the times that opposing sides came together and treated each other humanely in the middle of a great inhumanity. It's colorized film from the time and I swear the closest we'll ever come to time travel. I saw it in theaters and was in tears. I could ramble on for days about it.

Thank you!! My stepdad and I made them along with the window seat. We just cut planks of wood from a home improvement store. I stained them that color, then we added strips of trim for more detail!

We admire your interest in British stuff. I don't watch this or read this. I guess coming from the British version of a rust belt. I guess I relate more to working class things. Crime etc. I will give you a few thoughts. McVicar by Himself film and book. Capture of the Black Panther. I recently saw Up The Junction film, written by Nell Dunn. A few Americans I have met are more knowledgeable about certain British things, than people I know here are. I always though US was better than Britain growing up, but maybe it is a fantasy in my head? Well some things are better in the UK. I would pronounce Carnarvon different, but I am not sure what the real correct way is.
