That is super clever! A guy makes these for $2,600.00. In all fairness I'm sure his probably is much better made but for the price you have in this you can't beat it! Nice to see your son and his friend with you in the shop. Beats sitting in front of the stupid TV. Your a good Father sir!!!!
What kind of adapter did you use for the drive pulley to use them on a Harbor Freight grinder? It looks like you had to adapt a 1/2 13 right and left thread to 5/8" shaft.I do agree with the other poster that liked you having the kids help in the shop. Most people would send them away. Good job dad.
I was wondering could you send a list of everything it took to build my brother and I are really interested in building this I just cant keep up with the video to write it all down
What is the distance between the two wheels in the middle? Also, why the need for the extra wheels, why not sit the two machines closer and use the grinding wheels? Less space, no?
CozYaDunGoofed the distance between the two contact wheels is adjustable. This is necessary for every knife grind. You start with the wheels wider, and then draw them in until you grind down to your desired blade width. As far as doing it with two drive wheels and two contact wheels, there must be space to accommodate and adjust for a 1”x42” belt.
@@libertybaptistchurchofnorw2476 I didn't realise it had to be adjusted for every knife grind. My bad. Why the 1"x42" belt though? Purely just for the surface area of the belt to take more away in less time? Surely, you could grind without the belts, bring the two machines together and use the grinding wheels?
@@cozyadungoofed3874 Grinding wheels need to be dressed and they get smaller as they are used. Swapping grits is a pain. Belts don't get appreciably smaller, can be swapped out in a matter of seconds, and don't need to be dressed.
+john cornell The 8" x 1" wheels were purchase online at Aliexpress www.aliexpress.com/store/715198 They will build you a custom wheel. All correspondence is by email. Be patient with them, as there is a language barrier and all of their stock wheels are measured in mm instead of inches. Do the conversion and place your order. Less than a 1/4 the price you will find them for here in the states, shipping included. Takes about a month to get them. Not sure what else you want to know.
I once had a similar set up and I can tell you that this is far less effective than just setting up a ball screw slide with a fence on a simple work rest and running the blade to the contact wheel one side at a time. (Belts running in reverse ofc) On your set up you have only as much control as human hands have. And it goes without saying whatever mental attitude you have at the time. And the results rely solely on the operators steadiness of the hands. Wich is quite a talent if you’re good at this but it’s nowhere near repeatable results with a simple ball screw slide jig. I used a double wheel hollow grinder for many many years and when the idea came to me in 2012 to just make an actual jug I never looked back.
Dan Estey I was talking about the drive wheel. The flaws in my set up come from the lack of precision in the Harbor Freight xy vices. The slop does not allow for the 1" drive wheel to accommodate the belt as well as I would like. A 2" wide wheel will run the belt with a little more stability. The machine works great, however I would just like to tighten things up a little.
Rashid Mehmood I can build you one. The problem you have to consider is shipping. The machine is very heavy and would need to be shipped by freight. I am in Southern California. So you could estimate freight from there. The cost for one of these would be $1500.
I have not had any requests for one, so I have never given it much thought. If you were seriously interested, I would consider it. I would give you an estimate as long as you understand that I am in Southern California, and shipping costs will be substantial.

Contact wheels are turning down. You work the blade on the bottom side, so there is no way for the wheels to grab the blade if used properly. The machine works great!
Nice work; these are rare tool builds. We shared this video on our homemade tools forum this week 😎
Very cool and high five for teaching these boys. You seem like an awesome dude.

Very nice. I used the same HF motor for mine. That double grind is awesome.
It looks like somebody did some time studying Charlie Lewis' grinder. Nice job!

Giant quality IKEA knife sharpener 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
What are the blue mount that the motors are mounted to.
Well you did a great job guess I could try figuring it out like you did , I built a grinder...
Where did you get your contact wheels?
Hey Max I was wondering could the shaft on the HF grinder accommodate a two inch thick wheel? Thanks.
Yes sir. In fact, that is one of the modifications that I want to make.
What brand of contact wheel is this or where can I buy one? Thanks.

What type of locking pliers are you using to hold the knife?
John, Those are just sheet mtal pliers. Vise grip sells them
Gracias amigo por compartir tus herramientas
I love your Harbor Freight build! What are you using for the big wheel and the drive wheel? What size are the big wheels?
Any details on the 8" wheels would be appreciated.

McMaster part # for the small wheel? This is such a neat project. I'm okay as a blacksmith, but my grinding leaves much to be desired.
Skateboard wheel?

Outstanding sir!!!

Did you have a machinist add the bearings to your contact wheels or did Aliexpress add them for you as part of your custom order?
Aliexpress set the bearings for me.
Nice set up. When you replied to another viewer about using two inch wheels next time, was that implying you would go to a 2 inch belt too?

Where did you get the disgn, I was looking to build one...
blakkkatt9 this is based off of the design by lewisrazors. No real blueprints or instructions. Just studying his design and fabricating on the fly.
Отлично!!! спасибо!!!
Do u sell these machines?
Nice!
Please kindly I wants to purchase this machine.

it wont grab the blade and flip up and back?
Dave Z You work against the direction rotation with these setups, otherwise it would drag the knife through, which is for obvious reasons, dangerous.
Hello SirDo you plan on making and selling them? Thanks

Can you give a list of materials an place you bought everything from
I would purchase one. Please get me an estimate if your interested.
