Thank you Aakash for a review on Acute bronchitis. Pneumonia will also present with dyspnea, pleuritic chest pain, fever, rigors, malaise, and hemoptysis. The presence of rales on PE should prompt pneumonia or CHF. Procalcitonin is the emerging biomarker to differentiate between bacterial and viral infection.

Thank you. I have a remark though I’m not a doctor nor med student : Coughing is the natural way the body expels the virus through mucus so cough suppressants sound like a bad idea if the cough is wet. It might be better to treat wet cough by drinking fluids, mild heating chest, and take medication that liquifies the mucus so it helps spit it out when it’s hard to.

With all due respect, if this is a channel for medical students, I need to make the following commnets having supervised students. 1. By far the biggest differentiator is acute shortness of breath, not fever. 2. You will never accurately know if it's pertussis and most peoples "reason to suspect" usually revolves around a "prolonged bad cough". Antibiotics have very limited evidence in cough resolution, only limited evidence for prevention of spread of pertussis. Patients are also unlikely contagious after 3 weeks which is often close to when they present. 3. In a significant proportion of cases, acute bronchitis is caused by a virus that is not named in any medical textbook and I see this regularly when I PCR patinets with swabs (and no it's didnt end up been pneumonia) 4. 10 percent of acute bronchitis lasts 3 to 8 weeks. 5. I would definitely not give promethazine in the elderly as you'll likely cause more harm than good. (Great only if you want them drowsy, fall and break a hip later). 6. The chest is completely clear more often than not on auscultation, in the setting of acute bronchitis.

Just got over the flu about 4 weeks ago and I've been suffering with shortness of breath and coughing since! It's aggravating and exhausting.. Hospital said I had inflammation in my bronchioles and said I had called "Post viral reactive airway syndrome" google just says bronchitis so I don't know. I was prescribed deltasone, my stomach is killing me, my chest hurts (sometimes my back too), my temp is around 98-99 so I'm sure that's fine, no asthma, diabetes or anything like that and I rarely vape a disposable. I hope this goes away! It's annoying.
Oh yeah, the symptoms are off and on too. One minute I'll be able to breathe then the next I feel awful and congested. I'll hear/feel a rattle in my chest at times.

What happens if I had viral symptoms, then goes to chest..going on 4th week. I started a low grade fever after starting medrol dose pack...and symbicort bid. After I started these, I came down with 99.2 fever. Chest tightness is better, but SOB. I'm wondering if I should stop medrol..is this bringing on infection?

I read somewhere viral bronchitis is very contagious. I’m 62 and have it for the first time. I had a bad bark and wheeze for a month. It seemed to ease up. I took a trip recently, and stayed with a couple who had verified Covid at Christmas. They recovered, but one of them got a cold while I stayed with them in mid January. I started to get a cold, but it went into my lungs. It consisted of nose blowing, hoarseness, and a very bad wheeze, crackle, and loose cough, and fatigue. It got worse, to the point I passed out on the flight home.
Went to the doctor as soon as I was home. X-rays showed my lungs to be “ a mess”. Given antibiotics andSymbicort 200 Turbuhaler. That was 4 days ago.
My breathing is better, and I’m not overly fatigued. Still have a loose cough.
      I’m resting, coughing, and sleeping.
