In the meantime, Grim Dawn is releasing a third expansion 7 years after the original launch, working on a 1.2 patch incorporating favourite mods into the game with credit/permission of the creators, has a huge modding scene that runs their own seasons if that's your thing. In my opinion, it's probably the truest diablo 2 successor (with some mods incorporating or recreating (parts of) d2 directly. Oh, and offline of course. The graphics may be outdated compared to something with a budget like diablo 4, but the gameplay is stellar. I hope you (mortismal or reader) will give it a try some day!

Diablo IV's main problem wasn't the 1.1 patch that nerfed a lot of stuff. D4 has a lot of structural problems, most related to lack of content in the endgame, which is essential to any arpg game. That's why I'll wait and see if this season is worth after a week, when people actually get to the endgame.
As a side note, I can't stress enough how much I recommend Grim Dawn to you; it's literally the antithesis of everything you said you disliked in D4. The game is getting a third expansion next year and you should totally cover that.
    Cheers, Mortis.

How many players reach endgame ? Most players play a few hours and that s it. Just look at the achievements rates on steam.
So t he target audience are thos players paying for the early game.
They are the most numerous and tje money maker.
Hardcore players are a small subgroup, losing them barely affects sales.
The managers are cruely efficients, no point wasting money on content that most player won t even use.

@@etienne8110 Hack & slash player live for end game. It's all about that next piece of loot to optimise their build a bit further. It is the pinnacle of low barrier of entry to an unlimited ceiling. It also is a highly addictive gameplay, pretty similar to a slot machine, so it doesn't make sense to put a entry fee at 70$ for an always online game designed to hook you in then make money with season passes and cosmetics. Just look at Path of Exile, if you're a good dealer the junkies will open their wallet willingly to buy your shit once you've hooked them with some well cooked freebies.

    • @dealbreakerc
      @dealbreakerc 11 месяцев назад +1

@@etienne8110 The thing is most player will reach endgame in D4. D4 endgame (in terms of gameplay content) was achieved at world tier 3 which can be entered at level about level 50 (as lost a high 30s for particularly good/lucky players). Once a player is in WT3 the only thing that they cant do yet is face Uber Lilith and that's just one boss who isn't even that hard. Everything that you do in WT3, you do in WT4.
But that's not really a problem because every ARPG has repetitive endgame content and people just seem to ignore the repetitiveness of other ARPGs because the narrative is "D4 bad" (it can and will improve but it isn't bad). Sure PoE has more variety but that game has been out for well over a decade and that variety came incrementally.

I bought the game after watching your initial review.
While I had fun with it, I can't shake the feeling that I am in an "abusive relationship".
It feels like a constant mind game where I have to navigate how the devs are trying to manipulate me and put me on a hamster wheel.
This is NOT how gaming should be, and D4 is my first and last game from Blizzard.

To be clear I still stand by my review, I enjoy the game, it's just this live service model they insist on that's gonna keep it from being anything truly great. Which is why I probably wont participate in these seasons much and I think the dev time spent on them and pumping out $20 skins like clockwork is effort that should be spent on meaningful paid expansions and patches that make an individuals experience better not maintaining balance in an ARPG.

It's just pure greed.

Blizzard has spared no effort over the years in alienating me as a customer. This goes for how they design their games and write theirs stories up to how they choose all monetization options available and how they manage their company as a whole.
I've had the ARPG itch for a while, but the last one I played was D3, which was extremely dumbed down, was unnecessarily online and also had one of the classes locked behind a paywall.
PoE is supposed to be the best one around, but I found it to be a bit daunting to learn.
This year I bit the bullet and bought Grim Dawn. It has enough crunch to make theorycrafting fun without becoming overwhelming, and follows the old school model I prefer (base game, expansion packs, offline). Besides being a bit old, the game will receive an update soon, and a new expansion was announced for the next year. Definitive recommendation from me of you wish to steer clear from Bobby Kotick's ant maze.

  • @roneon4

The main issue with D4 is the lack of end content especially when you start to compare with other ARPG is not good. In one side and going back to D3 they were able to get away during that time for a long time however the market and current ARPG ecosistem is in a much better shape right now.
The next thing is that many current ARPG are full of content even some of the early access games will shadow D4 in that area.
At this point they need to generate at least a couple of more end game mechanics and/or game modes that can be play during a season in order to really extend the life cicle of each one if not this is going to be a one trick ponie every season.

Not to yuck anyone's yum, but I have no idea how so many people enjoy Diablo 4. It's the worst money I've spent on a game in ages. I enjoyed the campaign and then the game just turned into a slog. The itemization is absurd (see the latest Carbot Animations video to see what I mean), leveling takes FOREVER, build diversity is a joke (every build for a given class feels really similar thanks to the limited skill choices and the way they're structured), etc etc etc.
To be fair, I haven't played since a few weeks after launch and it sounds like they at least addressed the leveling thing. But overall I just found the game really disappointing and I'd rather just play Last Epoch or even D3. I just don't see the appeal.

Here are a few reason: It would cost them millions. Most logic is server side. Do you know how much work it is to port everything to the client side. Then it would allow even easier hacking of the client, which is one of their main points and also understandable.
You can't create a server only game then flip a switch and it's suddenly an offline game. They could give you their server software so you can run your own server. Yeah, Zero chance sorry. Even if they wanted to.
They would have to create a new game like diablo 5 with offline mode in mind from the start for this to work.

Oh I dont think they'll do it, and yes I am fully aware of the implications and work load, but I'm still gonna complain because they are a multi billion dollar company that just got acquired by an even bigger company. They have the money and resources its simply a matter of if they prioritize making a long lasting well remembered game or pumping out $20 skins and battlepasses instead of meaningful content, but we all know what the answer is gonna be. I can and will continue to complain about it where relevant though.

    • @mpo48
      @mpo48 11 месяцев назад

activision blizzard has money, thus they could do it if they were not greedy, how difficult it is is irrelevant, they absolutely can flip a switch its just that they wont do it because they are greedy.

Arcanum had terrible game design but an amazing world and story, so if they just fix the first part in a remake or a sequel, it would be an amazing experience.

If I was actually making the decisions, Id gauge interest with an enhanced edition that brought a lot of the unofficial patch changes that make it playable etc while publicly announcing that we'd use the success or failure of that to allocate resources to a potential sequel if the stats were promising/worthwhile. Meaningfully update an old IP to add to game pass at the same time seems like an easy PR win even if there isnt enough there to warrant a sequel financially.

I told my friend as of right now, D4 is a great game to play to slay until level 100 and mess around with a few builds, do the new content then wait for next season. By S4 I think the game will be a game you will actually want to level multiple characters and do more endgame. If the next few patches are as big as the last one then the game will be in a decent spot.

Yeah I feel like I'm done with Diablo for a long time. I have to be in the right mood for ARPGs because there's a lot of grinding and whatnot, and there's still a lot of qol missing. An offline mode would be great though, as always online means no mods, addons and the amount of replayability added for free to games because of mods is huge. I'm glad it's still being worked on and maybe next year sometime I'll be wanting more. For now I'm still playing BG3 because it's that good.

Bought the game when it came to Steam so I can play it on my Steam Deck, and it's been really awesome. Then again I've been able to play D2R on my deck as well. Anyway, I've been enjoying the game not as loot hunting game as its predecesors, but a live open world exploration game. The story is good (not great) but the side quests are interesting, especially the short chain ones; quality varies though.
I will most likely drop the game once I either get lvl 100 and/or explore the entire map with one character. Then I will feel like I'm done with the game. I don't see this as my forever game, I doubt I will even play this for over a month.

Unfortunately for Blizzard and D4, I just don't find any reason to play it. With the likes of Grim Dawn (which had an amazing free update), Titan Quest, TL2 and D2R around, all which can be played offline and with mods, D4 ironically seems like a relic. Even Last Epoch, which I haven't touched in ages I'd sooner go back to.

Back in 2013, Microsoft tried to force _everything_ on Xbox One to be online only, because the Xbox One itself required a constant internet connection to function. After backlash, they changed that. But that's still the direction they're going. It's only a matter of time before some, if not most, of these games are Game Pass exclusive.
