if you don't mind me comment on this, personally I think Infect as a mechanic should be not allowed in EDH (although I have a strong opinion of it in any format,I hate infect) it doesn't matter if you bump it up to 20 points of infect,a mono green infect will get there in less than turn 5. Sure, commander because it's a 99 card deck singleton increases the randomness of card draw and probability, but ig you are 20% lucky, the other guys are fucked
Extra turns, Draw lots of cards, Bounce effects, Windfall effects, reusable counters, any sort of combo deck... So, what you're saying is I should never play Blue.
This video explains how the author was butthurt by the blue player in the group, and doesn't mention broken shit like maelstrom wanderer or infinite combos. Seriously, blue has a really bad beginning, you have to take advantage of it. Honestly green is more of a threat, because they are so much more efficient.
You've basically said: any thing that is even close to a player gaining an advantage should be shot down. Welcome to mtg, where winning a game does have to happen from time to time.
Thank you so much for this video. I am a casual player, and I share you views of on playing for fun and enjoying the social dynamic, and all too often I play against evil :(. Now I can deal.
I found 2 evil cards that synergies really well together, key to the city (Tap: give target creature unblockable) and Phage the untouchable (if Phage does combat damage to a player, that player loses the game)
Gather Specimen doesn't completly work against tooth and nail and it's similars, since you have to cast it in response. Now they now you will get their creatures so they decline to put the creatures on the battlefield. It still stops them from getting a huge creature early, but you won't get the creature unless they have something like gruul charm or homeward path.
+harel Hazan-Fuchs I believe that once your opponent pays the entwine cost of Tooth and Nail, the "choose both" effect is forced and so they can't decide to tutor them but not put them on the field in response to Gather Specimens. So once the entwine cost is paid, the creatures are getting stolen whether they want them to or not. Someone can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
AzizidarkReborn They still search the library and the hand but they may choose to not put them onto the battlefield because they don't have to. It's "up to two" anyways, but when searching you don't have to find.
+AzizidarkReborn They still don't choose the cards until after you play Gather Specemins, so you aren't getting good cards off it. Once they choose the cards they're going to put into play, the next time you get priority those cards are already in play, so Gather Specemins can't steal them. If you play it in response to them casting Tooth and Nail they can simply choose to either not put any cards into play, choose to give you bad cards, or, worst case, give you a Phage making you lose
I like it, great idea for a video, one point on Ashnods Altar, if they have their combo set up its impossible to interrupt as it doesn't use the stack (mana ability). when I first got into edh I didn't understand 'the spirit" and made a Ghave Deck that was designed to abuse that and phyrexian altar, not fun for our play group and it still gets talked about 18 months later...
Gather Specimens doesn't work against Tooth and Nail because they're not forced to put the creatures into play; they'll simply search them up and hard-cast them later. Obviously, Gather Specimens stops them for a moment, but a regular counterspell does it better. I've never been impressed with that card.
one of the evilest combos I have ever seen was tooth and nail entwined to search out avacyn, angel of hope and Iona, shield of emeria in a sigarda, host of herons deck. at the time I was relatively new to commander so I only had an aurelia, the warleader deck that was mostly white, and the third player was using an akroma, angel of wrath deck. we could not handle it at all so we just had to wait while he punched us in the face.
Its not the cards that are the problem its the players. If a player gose out of there way to build a broken deck (like Infinate Turns) then yea its not fun at all, but the fact is players are ment to build a deck thats fun that is the idea behind commander. So if you put a Time Warp or Time Streach in your commander deck then thats cool you get a few extra turns, but if you then add things that allow you to replay them cards over and over again be it from your grave or whatever then it becomes a broken deck and that only happens if the player who built that deck had that in mind. So yea its the players that are the problem not the cards.
***** My play group has a ton of fun to break each other like Kit Kat bars. Some how surviving that combo or massive attack barely alive and then come back and win! Oh man that's the feeling!
I feel bad now :( ... I kinda went outa my way to get a few cards for my new edh deck. Some notable cards are, Time warp, and temporal mastery. (both are take an extra turn cards.) . I don't have a way to make an infinite turn deck, nor want one. But now i feel like a mean person for buying these cards...What do i do???
Geoffreyvexer Nothing you can use the cards as normal theres nothing wrong with that. I said its only not fair or broken when someone goes out of there way to make the deck broken using them cards for infinite purposes.
Is there any way you could make a video on what the leagues of MTG are? I am somewhat new to MTG tournaments and I don't know what kind of leagues allow what cards. All I have heard of are Commander and Infinity (I think that is what it was called or Im crazy).
Ooh ooh ooh - What do you think about temporal mastery? There is only one and it is likely to remain just the one :D (Too often I will boundless realms though so I might be removing the temporal mastery...or the boundless realms) - Timmy
+TheJPKaram Glad you liked it. I hide fun things in some of the videos that float through my head when I am making them. Kind of a window into the weird way I think.
Well good sir for what it's worth i approve and your video has been very helpful for me as a just starting MTG player who's trying to build his first EDH deck
No problem I can do a video on the major formats. The main ones are, Standard, modern, and legacy for competitive formats. This video is for EDH also known as Commander.
Gather Specimen-ing a terrastodan is the dirtiest thing you can do with it. You get the terrastodon, then you get all the tokens from things you destroy.
I like how the "counters" to the comes into play part were ones that wouldnt work on one of the 2 examples =P pro white and black =) there are a lot of answers to animar though
Possibly the most broken enchantment i've seen in blue is Infinite Reflection. if played right, you can get 1 cost token-copies of things like Archangel of Thune, or whatever, that really - really hurt when played in large numbers.
My personal favourite to use with that (if I feel like losing all my friends, getting mugged by my playgroup, and being forced down a spiral of depression which will eventually lead to my suicide) is Scourge of fleets. This happens more often then not: U When this creature enters the battlefield under your control, return all creatures your opponents control to their owners hands 6/6 Well, that's a potent lock.
+Ninurtah RS I play infinite reflection on my Artisan of Kozilek when a ton of my creatures are in the graveyard. Then I play Rite of Replication on it, spawning a almost never-ending chain of Artisan of Kozileks.
Yup. It's cards like infinite reflection and false demise and followed footsteps being in actual commander branded decks makes me really not care about "evil" cards. Mass search, sure, it slows down the game, kind of a jerk move to focus a deck around it. But that is the game. There are big annoying effects everywhere. Most annoying combo decks rarely ever work because actually getting the right cards at the right time can be hard. I love big silly combo effects but I rarely ever win with them.
mythicmtgtech If I were to add it, I'd probably cut Syncopate. By the time I cut it, that slot was counter magic, and my current suite is Dismiss, Dissipate, Counter spell, Memory Lapse, Hinder, Exclude, Syncopate, and Trickbind.
Trying your best to win a game against other players also trying their best to win a game is not only incredibly fun but helps increase the overall skill level of players. I don't have a problem with people going combo if we are all trying to win the game.
good vid, just some opinions on my part here though. enter the infinite is a card that needs omniscience and/or dream halls to even function properly. 12 bones to cast for "just" a ridicolous draw effect is pretty harsh, it is also a very risky card to use, very different from tooth and nail which lets you put 2 win cards directly into play. in any dedicated niv-mizzet deck or deck that uses the lab maniac enter the infinite is flat out broken, that i can agree with but it is not an evil card :)
''We'll judge these cards by their unfun nature'' 10 minutes later : ''I like to play Nevermore against these cards'' Yup, this is really a fun card, making your opponent unable to cast the card they built the deck around. Don't get me wrong, I run Nevermore and it's really a good card, but to name the other guy's commander is just really against the nature of the format. It's meant to be fun for you and for your opponents.
+pipi caca Yeah Nevermore is totally fun in commander when you can basically ban someones commander from ever being played right? Wrong. No one else ever does anything about that Nevermore so that player is forced to answer it on their own and basically isn't playing commander. Real fun.
Emeraldraven777 that is what commander is about. Sometimes, it sucks. If your deck can't function without your commander you're not done building your deck.
I like how you list Animar as a potential 'evil card' and then your responses are both cards he's immune to, since he has protection from black and white.
So it seems like there are a lot of playgroups with house rules that ban certain cards or strategies ie. extra turns, infinite combos, iona, other cards that make the game unfun. There is an official ban list for multiplayer and single player commander, why not an official ban list for "fun" commander?
tsuich00i The problem with avoiding land destruction (and in particular mass land destruction) is that it removes the draw back to a green "get all my lands in play" strategy. Just like avoiding wraths removes the draw back to swarming the board with creatures.
tsuich00i Sure, but part of the reason (not the whole reason) it wins without a hitch is because you avoid land destruction. Which is fine, as you mentioned, it's a format designed for fun not for earning pro points so not allowing certain archetypes in your group is a good idea if people don't fund them fun.
But remember to not play Plagiarize against a Consecrated Sphinx. It creates an infinite loop that won't end well for you (unless you have a Laboratory Maniac, obviously) :)
I've run a couple of those cards before but never in a combo. but still they are ridiculous and I come across way more competitive players than casual players with decks like those
Gather Specimen is actually pretty atrocious. I want it to be good, I really do, but Genesis Wave is "may "and Tooth and Nail is "up to two" creatures (a.k.a. the person can search their library and simply just not put any creatures on the battlefield if you've cast gater specimen in response, and if that's the case you'd have been better off with a regular counterspell).
Yeah it often times acts as a instant speed control magic for 6. However it does have the potential to cause a huge swing if someone casts a something like a kicked rite of replication, storm herd, army of the damned, ect. I do agree its too niche for me to sit on 6 mana hoping for a bomb like that. A more practical use I suppose would be holding on to it when you anticipate the opponent will play their game breaking general. I'd love to see a maelstrom wanderer walk right into a gather specimens.
For the most part, I don't like combos. But when a game is dragging on forever and becomes painful to continue, I'd rather someone combo off and win rather than have everyone keep slugging it out for another hour before we can start another game. Also, Animar is not a comes into play trigger. It is triggered on casting a creature.
So, wait, you say it's better idea to sac your permanents in response to bounce? Or did I misunderstand? Then again, removing a target from capsize prevents the buyback, right?
I did manage to win my first game of edh but i was running a mono white equipment deck and if i didn't have my commander out when my one of my two opponents stole iona from the other guys deck and of course he declared white but i did manage to force him to block with it and have it die so i feel like i got really lucky against iona
Probably the only video I dislike of yours, where the only card I agree with you on is Iona. The truth is your answers are often more "evil" than the card being answered. Also many of them are degenerate combo pieces.Rule of law + Knowledge pool. Elite arcanist and timestop, and the list goes on. For someone who overemphasizes fun, you obviously need to look at this list again
i want to star playing EDH, and what I take away from this video is that I shouldn't play anything with a blue mana symbol on it. Since blue is my favourite colour, what colour should i play in its place?
Blue is fine to play just prepare for others to cringe at it. If you want to try another color i recommend green. It has lots of power and is a lot less hated.
if you need some answer to this guy, here goes In Black: like 100 different sacrifice effects. srsly, take your pick In Blue: Dissipation field gets rid of any enchantments/counters on him, making him a lot less threatening In white: celestial flare or dispense justice In red: earthquake or other AOE burn when he's small In green: lots of spells that can destroy any enchantments he has on him, such as naturalize. with no enchants on, just out lifegain him: pristine talisman works in any color
I love my blue Kira deck. It's not mean at all. The deck name is I Win. Too subtle? Blue is only fun for the person playing it, everybody else gets to sit and watch.
I think eye of ugin isnt that bad considering that it take 7 mana plus the land and then u have to play the giant card. Plus it is an answer to the most unfun card iona with duplicant, plus its only on ususally 1-3 cards in a deck usually
I'm totes cool with being seen as the bad guy who runs two different combo win-conditions. :3
Feel you on a few, I like my blue, but yeah, it's often broken. But the Voltaire song at the end was a great touch.
thanks that slung already make me laugh and just hit blue players perfectly
I believe Triumph of the Hordes should be included in this video. All your creatures gain +1/+1 trample and infect until end of turn
Rhett Pierce It is a one shot kill bet has answers like fog, or killing creators. What do you think about increasing the poison limit to 20 for EDH?
if you don't mind me comment on this, personally I think Infect as a mechanic should be not allowed in EDH (although I have a strong opinion of it in any format,I hate infect) it doesn't matter if you bump it up to 20 points of infect,a mono green infect will get there in less than turn 5. Sure, commander because it's a 99 card deck singleton increases the randomness of card draw and probability, but ig you are 20% lucky, the other guys are fucked
I love infect and i would never want them to change to 20 poison counters...then no one would play infect anymore!
Nice video. I like the fact that you show cards to prevent or answer those cards :D
you forgot necropotence in the massive draw
12:40 neither card you recommended here stops Animar, you'll want to use counter spells or something to deal with him.
I had this wicked combo in my Mizzix deck. It was hysterical. So many Stormchaser Mage copies and triggers. Over 100 damage with no responses
Glad to see that none of the cards in my EDH deck made the list as problems, but some made the list as solutions :-)
I love how he didn't mention black has the eqsuiet blood/ sanguine blood combo in it
Extra turns, Draw lots of cards, Bounce effects, Windfall effects, reusable counters, any sort of combo deck... So, what you're saying is I should never play Blue.

haha squirrel prison was one of my all time favorite decks. Opposition rocks! :p
Great idea I will do a top planeswalkers video!
The Voltaire at the end surprised the hell out of me, thought my music started playing somehow.
I am thinking about adding her to my pleases ban list for an upcoming video. She is just broken.

very good point they can fail to find or put 0 cards into play with T&N.

hehe you kill the thing Animar is combing. Stopping Animar is tough as his cost is so low, you need a terminus or hallowed burial.
Umbral Mantle, Magus of the Coffers, and Diabolic Revelation works wonders!
Its not the cards that are the problem its the players.

Nothing you can use the cards as normal theres nothing wrong with that.
I said its only not fair or broken when someone goes out of there way to make the deck broken using them cards for infinite purposes.
I would like to agree, and in your example I do, but how do you justify anyone putting winter orb in the deck? That card in itself is just anti-fun.
Kintai Amer
I don't know that card of the top of my head I have not been around the game long enough.
There must be a better answer than sac...maybe redirect or wild ricochet, because having to sac your stuff might suck more than bouncing
Is there any way you could make a video on what the leagues of MTG are? I am somewhat new to MTG tournaments and I don't know what kind of leagues allow what cards. All I have heard of are Commander and Infinity (I think that is what it was called or Im crazy).

No problem I can do a video on the major formats. The main ones are, Standard, modern, and legacy for competitive formats. This video is for EDH also known as Commander.
just finished making a Riku EDH deck, then I saw this video xD also Pithing Needle is good at preventing powerful commander abilities!
Torpor orb seems to do the trick for me against Animar, usually their artifact hate is on a creatures etb trigger.
Animar has protection from white and black and your "answers" were white and black x.x
Very true, I missed that at the time. :)
By the way you can counter split second cards with voidmage apprentice, neat little trick.
This happens more often then not:
U
When this creature enters the battlefield under your control, return all creatures your opponents control to their owners hands
6/6
Well, that's a potent lock.
+Ninurtah RS I play infinite reflection on my Artisan of Kozilek when a ton of my creatures are in the graveyard. Then I play Rite of Replication on it, spawning a almost never-ending chain of Artisan of Kozileks.
Zakass Of 'Murica doesn't work.
Eldrazi triggers require you to cast them.
Ninurtah RS It works well when you misread it and no one else bothers to check the card.
I love big silly combo effects but I rarely ever win with them.
i play mayael. this deck makes me feel naya is the most powerful shard. essentially free blightsteel colossus, avacyn, iona, ect. you get the idea.
even if you have 2 answers the odds of having them is so small a mono colour deck is just toast.
what program do you use for the slideshow type effect that you put the card into
Thought you'd want to know that this video convinced me to not run Forbid in my Dralnu EDH deck :]
/cheer what did you replace it with?
mythicmtgtech If I were to add it, I'd probably cut Syncopate. By the time I cut it, that slot was counter magic, and my current suite is Dismiss, Dissipate, Counter spell, Memory Lapse, Hinder, Exclude, Syncopate, and Trickbind.
I use eye of ugin in every eldrazi deck I play but have never used its search.
Fun and fair over pure winning tactics.
Yes I will add that to my ideas list. Formats 101
Best card against mass-copy effects is IMHO Eye of Singularity :)
Totally in spirit of the original EDH: There can be only one!
Rhystic Study needs to be on the powerful draw spell list.
Trying your best to win a game against other players also trying their best to win a game is not only incredibly fun but helps increase the overall skill level of players. I don't have a problem with people going combo if we are all trying to win the game.
chicago made man exactly
Like, how much should I not try to win if I don't want to be considered an evil jerk?
good vid, just some opinions on my part here though. enter the infinite is a card that needs omniscience and/or dream halls to even function properly.
You forgot lim duls vault it can get any single card in your library with enough life
Demonic Tutor type cards aren't the problem, it's the card they get that is the problem.
''We'll judge these cards by their unfun nature''
10 minutes later :
''I like to play Nevermore against these cards''
Yup, this is really a fun card, making your opponent unable to cast the card they built the deck around.
Cry some more
I just must be the most evil player because my favorite edh commander is iname death aspect.
This is probably why I don't have friends.
I like how you list Animar as a potential 'evil card' and then your responses are both cards he's immune to, since he has protection from black and white.
the x in front of the cards is stupid
So it seems like there are a lot of playgroups with house rules that ban certain cards or strategies ie. extra turns, infinite combos, iona, other cards that make the game unfun. There is an official ban list for multiplayer and single player commander, why not an official ban list for "fun" commander?
hehe, interesting idea. I like the idea of an official anti fun list.
tsuich00i The problem with avoiding land destruction (and in particular mass land destruction) is that it removes the draw back to a green "get all my lands in play" strategy.
Just like avoiding wraths removes the draw back to swarming the board with creatures.

Thanks for pathing my Animar! Now I get a free land :)
Also, try stasis and time elemental (evil laugh)
What did you do to let someone path your Animar?
On nixilis unshackled is great for stopping searches
Nice idea
Very True, Necro is a monster.
I wish it was it is hell to play against.
Obnixles unshackled is great for stopping search
But remember to not play Plagiarize against a Consecrated Sphinx. It creates an infinite loop that won't end well for you (unless you have a Laboratory Maniac, obviously) :)
I use caged sun for unlimited mana, it doubles what your lands give you and it gives creature +1/+1
mass cycle? you mean nekusar decks?
I've run a couple of those cards before but never in a combo. but still they are ridiculous and I come across way more competitive players than casual players with decks like those
For search hate, you could have also added Mindlock Orb.
Animar wouldnt be affected by terminus because the "protection from white"
Gather Specimen is actually pretty atrocious. I want it to be good, I really do, but Genesis Wave is "may "and Tooth and Nail is "up to two" creatures (a.k.a. the person can search their library and simply just not put any creatures on the battlefield if you've cast gater specimen in response, and if that's the case you'd have been better off with a regular counterspell).

A more practical use I suppose would be holding on to it when you anticipate the opponent will play their game breaking general. I'd love to see a maelstrom wanderer walk right into a gather specimens.
City of Solitude makes it so you can't play spells or activate abilities when it's not your turn.
So... am I just not allowed to play my favorite color then? :/
gegenplan^^
greetings from germany : )
It was always in play. My friends always forget about it so I ask for any responses then point to it and laugh.
Mind over matter to draw my deck? No, mind over matter to draw your deck! (Temple Bell)
so in the 11# spot, is medomai the ageless is bad or good?
Can u possibly do the best plainewalkers for under 20$?
So, wait, you say it's better idea to sac your permanents in response to bounce? Or did I misunderstand? Then again, removing a target from capsize prevents the buyback, right?
+aldotrioksidi Correct. the card fizzles without a legal target
I did manage to win my first game of edh but i was running a mono white equipment deck and if i didn't have my commander out when my one of my two opponents stole iona from the other guys deck and of course he declared white but i did manage to force him to block with it and have it die so i feel like i got really lucky against iona
Everyone in my play group just pays the mana. The card is great if people do not pay or dead if they do.
+Frank Litzenberger Meaning your version of "fun" is only fun to you.
+Frank Litzenberger This is a personal opinion based list. Fun is always relative.
I was expecting Iona to be on this.
i want to star playing EDH, and what I take away from this video is that I shouldn't play anything with a blue mana symbol on it. Since blue is my favourite colour, what colour should i play in its place?
Blue is fine to play just prepare for others to cringe at it. If you want to try another color i recommend green. It has lots of power and is a lot less hated.
okay, thanks a lot!
mythicmtgtech Do you have any recommendations for fun green commanders?
Andrew Newman "Azusa, lost but seeking" is great for ramp
thanks, ill check her out!
Draw your deck with Laboratory Maniac out. You draw your deck and win, without your opponents drawing answers.
That is the idea!
hmm.. Lot of fun cards I could use here.
if you need some answer to this guy, here goes
In Black: like 100 different sacrifice effects. srsly, take your pick
In Blue: Dissipation field gets rid of any enchantments/counters on him, making him a lot less threatening
In white: celestial flare or dispense justice
In red: earthquake or other AOE burn when he's small
In green: lots of spells that can destroy any enchantments he has on him, such as naturalize.
with no enchants on, just out lifegain him: pristine talisman works in any color
I have 17 monocolored edh decks now...not a single multicolored one :P
I have Trickbind and Stasis in my Tiny Leaders deck :P
I hate lighthouse chronologist so much that I killed it instead of killing my opponent when I could've. Still killed him next turn anyways though >_>
Defense of the heart has tooth amd nail beat by far!
defense is a lot more fragile although just as broken
Didn't know City was in play... thought you just attacked with 4 hydras with buff from doubling/parallel lives. When did City come into play?
Sorry for the 3 comments I keep thinking of them can you also do best tanks
I love my blue Kira deck. It's not mean at all. The deck name is I Win. Too subtle? Blue is only fun for the person playing it, everybody else gets to sit and watch.
Kyle Mastalerz that's how it's always been.
But honestly every other color is just lying. They're just as big of assholes
I think eye of ugin isnt that bad considering that it take 7 mana plus the land and then u have to play the giant card. Plus it is an answer to the most unfun card iona with duplicant, plus its only on ususally 1-3 cards in a deck usually
No mass basic land destruction?
Armageddon would be a good addition
by "hell", do you mean "i'm too lazy to play cards that remove this" ?
Plagiarize doesnt work against consecrated sphinx cause u get mill if u cast that.
I play cards like Ashnod's altar in my token deck but yeah, I don't think I have seen anybody play palinchron without using him to combo...
Angus had summoning sickness game two...
Blue motto: no fun allowed, no matter what.
