squirrelbong A any of the liliana are amazing. i roll both the vess tutor one and the dark realms so i can just grab all the swamps i could ever need and with the a couple other cards i have 10 +swamps all tapping for 6 mana each.
Damnation is great (and expensive) for its mana cost, but I prefer Life's Finale. The idea to send the best creatures from one opponent's deck to the graveyard just appeals me the most.
Han Daimond But the fact that life's finale sends creatures to the graveyard is the downfall of the card, trust me is like tutoring for your oppenents in commander, Damnation is sooo much better. But with life's finale you dont have to send the creatures to grave if you dont want to, it is a cheaper alternative thou, but if you can get your hands on a damnation the do so, highly recommended
This is coming from someone who plays Mono-Black EDH as my primary EDH deck. As far as 1v1's go, if you don't mind being "that person", Skithirix, the blight dragon is probably the strongest commander in the color. In multiplayer, don't even touch it with a ten foot pole. Go with Geth. For creature mana acceleration, Crypt Ghast is amazing. So is Nirkana Revenant. For land acceleration, Cabal Coffers, Urborg, tomb of Yawgmoth, and Lake of the Dead are all fantastic. As far as creature bombs go, Grave Titan is so much better than Kokusho or Massacre Wurm. Myojin of Nights Reach is probably one of the dirtiest black creatures ever printed as far as EDH is concerned. Lastly i'll mention some personal favorites of mine, a bunch of which should definitely have been on this list instead of the general "best black spells ever" that's on here: 1. Yawgmoth's Will (broken GY recursion) 2. Increasing Ambition (better tutor than Beseech the Queen or Diabolic Tutor) 3. Sadistic Sacrament (Exile the best fifteen cards in your opponents deck). 4. No Mercy (one of the best defensive enchantments in black) 5. Damnation (Definitely top ten in black) I've saved one of the best black cards for last: Infernal Darkness. Seriously, go look that up. It's backbreaking against any deck not running a good amount of black. No one I've played against had even heard of it until i brought it out, and no one was happy to learn about it. Don't want to sound like i'm complaining, a lot of these spells ARE good black spells. But ignoring some of the most insane black spells to mention merely decent stuff like Black Sun's Zenith, Life's Finale and Shriekmaw... it's just not helpful to aspiring black edh mages. *I've purposely left out stuff printed after the video was released.
The only reason Black isn't the strongest color in EDH is the complete lack of Artifact and Enchantment removal... As a mono-black edh player, i rely on other players to do this destruction since I can do pretty much ANYTHING ELSE
If you're talking competitive wise, it's not the strongest because it isn't blue. Counter spells are the best removal and most (not all) combos have blue cards in them. But I didn't play edh 4 years ago so idk u might be different
Another awesome command zone! Black is my favorite for edh. ... is it possible to slow down a bit though. The video seems a bit rushed. I want more Wedge time (no need to rush) and the ability to process your card thoughts as you go through them. :)
Mono black mana ramp? Nykthos, Urborg, Cabal Coffers, Extraplanar Lens, Crypt Ghast, Caged Sun, Gauntlet of Power. If you're playing Sheoldred as commander, sack and bring back a burnished hart every turn. Have fun with all your mana!
I think Black Sun Zenith needs to be a MUST play next to Damnation for black mass removal in EDH, since indestructible has become such a big part in deck builds.
I'm surprised Dark Confidant didn't get a shoutout during the draw mechanics section. I know it's an expensive card but so is Imperial Seal and it was mentioned. Good list though. Necropotence is the card that got me in to Legacy formats.
In my opinion one of the best commanders/creatures for a graveyard/creature regeneration and or gorgon deck is Hythonia The Cruel, with her monstrous ability, which can easily sweep everything your opponent loves by getting rid of every creature that isn't a gorgon, paired relatively high power and toughness, most, if not all opponents would probably consider you the spawn of Satan after seeing her in your deck. But that's just me tho.
No idea why this was a recommend video for me weird RUclips, im hailing from 2024 a lot has happened with MTG did you guys know that there is a busted 2/1 Red Monkey for 1 mana that ramps you and essentially draws you cards insane right? On a serious note I still use some of these cards mentioned including Kokusho, the Evening Star + Mikaeus, the Unhallowed for my mono black deck, while using Massacre Wurm + Rune-Scarred Demon for my Yarok Deck and demonic tutor/vampiric tutor are always good the other tutors mentioned have fallen off though and Damnation doesn't cut it these days with all the indestructible around. What are the cards like in 2034 future watcher?
When are you going to make the red and green videos? I really want to see the green one! Also, any chance there is a "best multicolored cards in Commander" and "best artifacts and lands in Commander"?
What about Seizan, Perverter of Truth? Draw 2 and lose 2 life every turn is some pretty epic card draw. And when combod with Underworld Dreams, Fate Unraveler, or Psychosis Crawler is DEVASTATING. Yet no mention.
sidisi, undead vizier should be on here (yes I realize the vid is old). It's a tutor effect for an exploit, pairs well something like dutiful attendant or other on removal effects, plus it has deathtouch, which is an effect I love to death. (ha ha ha.)
Insanonaga It's also Legendary. I actually just built a deck with it as the general, based around reactivating it's effect every turn and tutoring up back breaking combos (Contamination + Bitterblossom is my favorite so far against non-black decks). Let us also not forget that Black is second only to Green when it comes to mana production, and, as the proud owner of Cabal Coffers, has access to multiple infinite mana combos.
black can very easily deal with large amounts of creatures without board wipes i.e. grave pact, dictate of erebos, and a lot of other cards. The problem is which way is best for you're deck. reanimator spells are very playable in commander. not one card mentioned do you simply play in black decks. with that said the mentioned cards are very strong but need thought on whether or not you play in your deck. sorin is great for control but not that great in graveyard decks such as mikaeus. in fact there are some decks he just doesnt fit well in as he usually brings one opponent to 10 life and thats about it while the rest of your opponents see you or him as an instant threat and just remove the threat from play.
Sorin is a ok in edh, but can be unfun for the players who all of a sudden lose because of him. His counter part lord of innistrad has helped me be fun in edh and get some valuable damage with his emblems.
i run a black white heavy life gain. basic build of the deck allows me to lifelink damage then redirect life gain that i do and do damage to another opponent. cards like defiant bloodlord with heavy life gain can ruin a game
Caleb Donahue The only reason is because it had a very limited print run. Unlike visions, where vampric tutor appears, three kingdoms is much harder to find.
i know this is an old video but any chance that this video could get an update about best black cards for edh/commander? Or does nothing changes at all? thx
gamefreak203 this list was garbage from the start besides the tutors. 1. nether void 2. chains of mephistopholes 3. toxic deluge/living death 4.contamination 5. necropotence 6. demonic tutor 7. volrath stronghold (technically black in edh) 8. reanimate/animate dead 9. the tutors. 10. thoughtsieze. that's the actual list in no particular orfer
A 6/6 flyer isn't enough to take out a player? Tell that to the player who died to my Birds of Paradise back when Ravnica was standard. XD But seriously, Rune-Scarred Demon is pretty awesome. He's fun in Karador when you can just cast him, tutor, sac him for mana, cast him again, tutor again, and repeat each turn. :)
I have been searching for some confirmation on Sorin Markov's -7 Control ability...as I read it I control target players next turn...well one of the options of a players turn is to concede...so can't I just force the player to concede (quit)?
You can only make actual play decisions, which is still insanely powerful having them make bad attacks or using there removal on there own things are great.
no, the number of counters on the mistcutter hydra is the number of mana you paied for the X in its costs. So its the ammount of mana you paied minus the green mana you have to pay
+Aronia55 It's fine on it's own, but when flicker effects are involved it gets pretty stupid pretty fast. Same thing with PrimeTime. Imagin Sylvan in a Roon deck, for example.
+BlackRider Bob Sylvan Primordial is absolutely absurd in edh. There are so many ways to abuse it that it completely takes over the game with things like clones, bouncing, and graveyard recursion.
i just find PHYLACTERY LICH to be an awesome card! "Indestructible As Phylactery Lich enters the battlefield, put a phylactery counter on an artifact you control. When you control no permanents with phylactery counters on them, sacrifice Phylactery Lich." WHAt DO YOU GUYS THINK?????
Amazing with you run any Darksteel artifacts like Darksteel Ingot or Darksteel Citadel. Especially if you bounce him, or sacrifice and then reanimate him. Just beware of mass artifact destruction or exile effects.
In my eyes Black's biggest weakness is it's inability to deal with artifacts and enchantments... Or do you habe any solution for me? I only found Gate to Phyrexia which isn't the final answer to my problem... :-/
not even an honorable mention to cabal coffers or any of its related ramp cards? no fun X cards like drain life? no Phyrexian Obliterator or Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon? am i missing something here or was the vid just too short to be able to cover everything?
dude, you forgot Rise of the Dark Realms. You keep talking about how the cards you're talking about work so well with the graveyard, but you keep forgetting the godlike power of this spell (it allows you to take all creatures in all graveyards and put them onto the battlefield under your control)
the way he talked when discussing victimize made me think he undervalues reanimator as an archetype because of all the graveyard hate. My Sidisi Dredge and Alesha reanimation decks would beg to differ
ModernMinded true. I usually do heavy control and have land tutors for cabals coffers though. He usually gets out pretty quickly, for me at least. However I totally see how he isn't amazing outside of my basement groups meta.
why can't they add more cards to the app magic 2015? At least update the game with new contents and more PvP like Xbox/PS/CPU..... game is amazing but it needs new material, like 3 or 4 vs battles. 1vs1vs1vs1 or 1vs1vs1 or 2vs2?
I came here for BLACK CARDS. FOR BLACK EDH. I don't fucking care about your opinion on other decks and whatever fucking cards are like them. This should have been a 4 minute video stating here are some cards I like. I use alot of these I don't disagree with almost all of your choices but holy shit. Drana bloodwitch and butcher of malkir sided with dictate of erebos and a gravetitan. Buddy u need to make better videos explaining the good shit. If anyone doesn't believe me look up the list of cards I have stated here. Put them together have them fight his list. You'll come back to me for black info I guarantee it. Black edh is my only edh and I love me some fucking edh
everytime I watch one of these edh videos I see a bunch of awesome new cards I've never seen. thanks Mr Wedge!
Glad you like them! Victimize is one of my personal favorite spells.
TheManaSource DEATH CLOUD ALL LIFE :) :) :)
I really like liliana vess...tutor her out and you're in good shape.
squirrelbong A Yeah but it's too easy to love Liliana cause she's strong, i love unusual cards......
squirrelbong A
any of the liliana are amazing. i roll both the vess tutor one and the dark realms so i can just grab all the swamps i could ever need and with the a couple other cards i have 10 +swamps all tapping for 6 mana each.
Life's Finale: Destroy all creatures then go into your opponents deck and kill their three best creatures too.
That's just mean
... and epically good.^^
The favorite card of my Mimeoplasm. :P
Finale would be much better if you searched target players library, rather than target opponent. It might even be worth running
That giggly smile. I miss that. Made me think we just got done doing the same thing. Miss you Wedge!

I would also like to add sheoldred as your general in 4 player commander. As for bombs abhorrent overlord is cheep and a fantastic late game bomb
New to magic thanks for all the suggestions great cards love black!
Very good post ;)
One other card I missed in my post is praetors grasp. It's a cheap bribery for black and rarely ever becomes a dead card.
Yeah preators grasp gets you artifacts or black spells, u can always find something good
The only reason Black isn't the strongest color in EDH is the complete lack of Artifact and Enchantment removal... As a mono-black edh player, i rely on other players to do this destruction since I can do pretty much ANYTHING ELSE
Ford LaBoube That my bro is why we run all is dust and nevs.
If you're talking competitive wise, it's not the strongest because it isn't blue. Counter spells are the best removal and most (not all) combos have blue cards in them. But I didn't play edh 4 years ago so idk u might be different

I love running Lashwrithe (sp) in my MonoBlack commander. Great combo with Yogmoth's Tomb
Love the idea with Kresh, great vid! Need more Jund suggestions so I will keeeeep watchin!
No you have chance to draw a card with with a cmc of 9 it only works in modern as the average card cmc is low.

Get down with the sickness! Your sniffles made this video hilarious. Ty for pulling through 😂
No idea why this was a recommend video for me weird RUclips, im hailing from 2024 a lot has happened with MTG did you guys know that there is a busted 2/1 Red Monkey for 1 mana that ramps you and essentially draws you cards insane right? I really enjoy this video as a black user keep it up bro
Sheoldred, toxic deluge, and living death are some of my favorite black cards not mentioned.
When are you going to make the red and green videos? I really want to see the green one!
Also, any chance there is a "best multicolored cards in Commander" and "best artifacts and lands in Commander"?
hey bro how about an updated version of this series, its 7 years old. many new sets in that time
My all time favorite combo is wrath of God cast a creature then anke of Mishra then Armageddon
What about Seizan, Perverter of Truth?
Draw 2 and lose 2 life every turn is some pretty epic card draw. And when combod with Underworld Dreams, Fate Unraveler, or Psychosis Crawler is DEVASTATING.
Yet no mention.
Tophat Mike More of a Nekusar Deck?

this is a channel I need to be watching to get better at playing MTG
Desolation Angel is so badass :)
black can very easily deal with large amounts of creatures without board wipes i.e. grave pact, dictate of erebos, and a lot of other cards. I just built a red/black zombie deck and I have so many new ideas now how to improve it
Sedisi is a good tutor as well
I have massacre wurm, flashback muroter, sorin Markov, demonic tutor,rune- scarred demon, victimise, triskalon mikarus the unhollowed in my deck
I like your show. Thank you for the work. :-)
Sorin is a ok in edh, but can be unfun for the players who all of a sudden lose because of him. His counter part lord of innistrad has helped me be fun in edh and get some valuable damage with his emblems.
Xiahou dun, the one eyed gets no mention? A black creature that acts like eternal witness.
Sadistic Hypnotist in a Nath of the Gilt Leaf EDH deck = no hand for any opponent.
Thanks wedge. But where is Sheoldred, and Obliterator?????
hey can you make a budget deck using erebos
I like how toxic deluge just wasn't mentioned
Will Krueger not really that good but amazing in tiny leaders
lazyassslothin Uh... its absolutely amazing.
i run a black white heavy life gain. basic build of the deck allows me to lifelink damage then redirect life gain that i do and do damage to another opponent. cards like defiant bloodlord with heavy life gain can ruin a game
How are Imperial Seal and Grim Tutor more expensive than Demonic and Vampiric Tutor?
Can someone explain to me why imperial seal is so much more expensive than vampiric tutor?
Caleb Donahue The only reason is because it had a very limited print run. Unlike visions, where vampric tutor appears, three kingdoms is much harder to find.
o ok thanks
Phyrexian Obliterator anyone?
nah. eater of hope man.
not for the opponent i imagine
i know this is an old video but any chance that this video could get an update about best black cards for edh/commander? Or does nothing changes at all? thx
gamefreak203 this list was garbage from the start besides the tutors. 1. nether void 2. chains of mephistopholes 3. toxic deluge/living death 4.contamination 5. necropotence 6. demonic tutor 7. volrath stronghold (technically black in edh) 8. reanimate/animate dead 9. the tutors. 10. thoughtsieze.
that's the actual list in no particular orfer
actually take off nether void and add yawgmoths will. void is an honorable mention
Personally the best black card in EDH in my opinion is bringer of the black dawn due to it being a tutor every turn.
but that requires all 5 colors....
Isn't Razaketh, the Foulblooded better?
yes! I LAV DAT KARD!
A 6/6 flyer isn't enough to take out a player? Tell that to the player who died to my Birds of Paradise back when Ravnica was standard. XD
But seriously, Rune-Scarred Demon is pretty awesome. He's fun in Karador when you can just cast him, tutor, sac him for mana, cast him again, tutor again, and repeat each turn. :)
+MikesUltimatum Well honestly in a mostly multiplayer format where you start with 40 life, 6 isn't a huge dent.
What about a worst black cards for edh?
The black vampire edh deck is so much better!
Sorin in B Vampire
Maybe this video is more of a Spike review, but for Johnny black EDH players like me, you can't build a deck without Grave Betrayal in it :D
this is a random question but with mistcutter hydra is the number of counters the number of Mana using to summon him
no, the number of counters on the mistcutter hydra is the number of mana you paied for the X in its costs. So its the ammount of mana you paied minus the green mana you have to pay
Fabian R thank you so much i really needed that info
EDH banlist is so weird. Necropotence, sure no problem. Sylvan Primordial, I'm sorry, that just won't do, banned.
+Aronia55 It's fine on it's own, but when flicker effects are involved it gets pretty stupid pretty fast. Same thing with PrimeTime. Imagin Sylvan in a Roon deck, for example.
6ftTiny Sure, I can see that. But Necropotence, in a slow format, with a larger life total...
+BTIsaac nope
felidar sovereign is not banned if you go to mtgcommander you can view the banlist
+BlackRider Bob Sylvan Primordial is absolutely absurd in edh. There are so many ways to abuse it that it completely takes over the game with things like clones, bouncing, and graveyard recursion.
So Why no chainer's edict or Phyrexian Obliterator?
Obliterater is bad in commander and edict isn't good enough to be top 10ish, while still an auto include
Over massacre wurm....
i just find PHYLACTERY LICH to be an awesome card!
"Indestructible
As Phylactery Lich enters the battlefield, put a phylactery counter on an artifact you control.
When you control no permanents with phylactery counters on them, sacrifice Phylactery Lich."
WHAt DO YOU GUYS THINK?????
Amazing with you run any Darksteel artifacts like Darksteel Ingot or Darksteel Citadel. Especially if you bounce him, or sacrifice and then reanimate him. Just beware of mass artifact destruction or exile effects.
yeah!
GRAAAAAAAVE TITAN!
Since when are reanimation spells bad in Commander?
Not a lot of decks actually use reanimate spells surprisingly
In my eyes Black's biggest weakness is it's inability to deal with artifacts and enchantments... Or do you habe any solution for me? I only found Gate to Phyrexia which isn't the final answer to my problem... :-/
Oblivion stone and lux cannon are fairly decent ways of dealing with artifacts and enchantments
Richard Eastwood lux to slow, but theres nev disk, the eldrazi boardwipe that is escaping me, spine of ish for targettted, etc
Nev disk
not even an honorable mention to cabal coffers or any of its related ramp cards? no fun X cards like drain life? no Phyrexian Obliterator or Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon? am i missing something here or was the vid just too short to be able to cover everything?
Cabal Coffers will end up in the land article later on. In the case of Skithiryx, we will likely go into further detail with a deck tech.
dude, you forgot Rise of the Dark Realms. You keep talking about how the cards you're talking about work so well with the graveyard, but you keep forgetting the godlike power of this spell (it allows you to take all creatures in all graveyards and put them onto the battlefield under your control)
+Carson The unwanted man rise of the dark realms had yet to be printed when this video was made I believe but don't quote me
well shit, sorry
I play black blue
Thing about geth... "I react and kill geth" yay 6 mana down the drain time to pay 8!!! :D
Cabal coffers?
cool
Did he really say Reanimator Spells are generally unplayable in Commander?
My deck wins through these...
lol "imperial seal is cheap"
wesley yielding He meant mana cost :P
oh haha my bad
Where is the "Best Red Cards for EDH/Commander!" episode??
Keondo You just answered your own question, red is garbage
no entomb?
the way he talked when discussing victimize made me think he undervalues reanimator as an archetype because of all the graveyard hate. My Sidisi Dredge and Alesha reanimation decks would beg to differ
i bet that dude favorite card is Savage Hunger...
I need kokusho
If you wanna be mean, play massacre wurm with natural affinity >:)
Necropotence isnt as broken in commander??!?!?!?!??!!? WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?????????????????
Tree of perdition... turn 2... gg
where the hell is Big Game Hunter!?!?!?!?!?
skrillex
Skrillex is not _particularly_ powerfull in EDH if you ask me.
You might have twice the life, but you also have 3 times as steep a curve.
ModernMinded true. I usually do heavy control and have land tutors for cabals coffers though. He usually gets out pretty quickly, for me at least. However I totally see how he isn't amazing outside of my basement groups meta.
yawmogs will????
I think it might be banned :/
+Cheeky Kunt its Not 😉
its not black, its colourless.
Yawgmoth's Will is Black, and it is not banned.
why can't they add more cards to the app magic 2015? At least update the game with new contents and more PvP like Xbox/PS/CPU..... game is amazing but it needs new material, like 3 or 4 vs battles. 1vs1vs1vs1 or 1vs1vs1 or 2vs2?
so am I just on crack, or did he never get to the red or green videos like this?
Humanoid diabetes
Blacks biggest problem is the inability to deal with other black decks.
i like your lips....
Did someone not remember that crypt ghast is a thing. U wanna talk edh with me let's talk. Crypt ghast. Death cloud. Silence the believers magus of the coft Liliana of the dark realms.
