    Hmm.. so I should assume if the reflexive verb I am looking at ends in irsi, it is from the "ire" type endings? And if it is arsi it is an "are" type ending, and likewise ersi it is a "ere" type? This is all new to me. I really like how you explain things. My first thought was, I never heard of these verbs that end in si... so I checked. And of course there they were. Whew, there is a LOT to the Italian language.

    One question I have is why do I hear the reflexive version of "mancare" being used when you want to say, "I miss you."?
    Why would you say "Mi manchi" instead of "Ti manco"??

    • @ItalianTeacherValentina
      @ItalianTeacherValentina  Год назад +1

      Mancare does not have a reflexive form. When we say "mi manchi" that "mi" is the indirect pronoun, meaning "to me".
      The reason why "mancare" is so hard of English speakers (as well as "piacere") is that it work the other way round then in English.
      So literally translated "mi manchi" means "you are missing to me" and that's how we actually frase "I miss you" in Italian.
      Same thing with "piacere": we don't say "I like pizza", we actually say "pizza is pleasing to me" = a me piace la pizza = mi piace la pizza.
      Hope this helps! Let me know if you would like a video on this.

      I would love a video on this topic, but what you just wrote was EXTREMELY helpful!! It makes so much sense to me now!
      I never considered that it was the actual phraseology that was different so that is why I never understood why "ti manco" or "ti piacio" were never used!
      Tante Grazie!!

    Hi Valentina, thank you for your amazing work,
    my question is: when do we use reflexive verbs and when we use regular verbs?
    since there is a list of reflexive verb, always those verb come in reflexive form? or depends?

    • @ItalianTeacherValentina
      @ItalianTeacherValentina  10 месяцев назад

      Ottima domanda, Afsar! I'll keep this in mind for a future episode of "Ask Valentina". 😊
      Meanwhile, the short answer is: when you use that verb for an action that's done on the "self" (myself, yourself...), we use the reflexive FORM.
      So e.g. I can use the verb "vestire" if I'm talking about dressing someone else, e.g. dressing a child (vesto il bambino), but I will use the reflexive FORM of "vestire" if I'm talking about dressing myself, since the action "reflects" on my self, so "Io MI vesto".

  • @KristinQtPie
    @KristinQtPie Год назад

    Grazie Valentina :) ma ho una domanda: when do you actually use the reflexive verbs “as is”. When would we not need to conjugate it and just use the words themselves, as is. Like vestirsi, alzarsi, etc. I hope my question made sense. 😊

    • @ItalianTeacherValentina
      @ItalianTeacherValentina  Год назад +2

      Kristin, if I understood you correctly, you mean when you would use the reflexive verb in its "infinitive" form.
      If that's correct, then we use it any time we would use to use the infinitive in the sentence, e.g. after another verb.
      E.g.: agli italiani piace vestirsi bene
      Please keep in mind that, even when you use reflexive verbs in the infinitive form, you still need to change the reflexive pronoun to match the subject:
      E.g.: Domani devo svegliarmi presto
      Hope this helps. I had another subscriber asking something similar, so I'm thinking on making a video on this. Would you like it? Let me know!

    • @wesleymariano1759
      @wesleymariano1759 Год назад

      Hi, I'm a native Portuguese speaker, but as Italian and Portuguese are very similar I can answer your question.
      1. When you say "amore mio" you mean "my darling", this is the typical way Italians say it.
      2. Actually you say the Italian teacher in English because in English you can put a noun as an adjective before another noun. In Italian you cannot do this.

    Where does the si come from? As the basic alzarsi

    • @ItalianTeacherValentina
      @ItalianTeacherValentina  10 месяцев назад

      It's the reflexive pronoun, which is what turns a normal verb ("alzare") into its reflexive form ("alzarsi"). Then the reflexive pronoun needs to be changed to match the subject, as I explain in the video.

    Totally confused but I'm not referring to this video per se. I was just trying to learn some sentences in Italian that all begin with 'the' only to find that 'the' can take the form of 'il' or Lo and La? Why is this, when in English there's only one way ofsaying 'the?'

    • @ItalianTeacherValentina
      @ItalianTeacherValentina  Год назад

      This video is on a different topic. You need to look into "definite articles" to understand why that happens. Please have a look at my dedicated class where I teach all about the definite articles in Italian and why we have so many versions of "the".
