Nobody's saying it, so I will. This bit was based off of Steve Allen's bit when he wore a suit of teabags and went into a take of water. Another time he dove into a tank of Jell-O. In case u didn't know, Steve Allen was the inventor and first host of late night. He even references this during the sponge suit when he says, "how do you like your tea?" Also during the dip suit when he say, "lower me, that's it, like a teabag."
Thats because its got transfats, its no longer used for many things except bird food. If you melt suet and fry french fries in it, you get original McDonalds fries.
"The parrot's decided to do chin-ups..." The suet suit's maybe the next because it bombs so thoroughly. Dave skewering his own stunts is its own reward!
Alright Don, got a question. Is there any particular reason Paul chose to sing "The Magnetizer" in the style of Jim Morrison? Or was he just being a silly goose?
@@dongiller I follow, didn't take it that way. :) And yes and no re: being self-evident, I reckon I just need to ask the question more coherently - was curious if it was maybe a callback to something earlier in the episode, or maybe Dave doesn't much care for The Doors, etc... Any number of things are possible in the Late Night universe, as I'm learning, hence my asking. An aside: I always peek in the description/comments because 9 times out of 10, you or someone else will explain a joke or give insight to current events going on at whatever time. I was born in 87 (ie too young to have watched LNwDL as it aired, even in its later seasons) and much appreciate you + the folks who take the time to give that information. It enriches the watching experience a ton, especially for those of us who weren't there/were too young. In short, thank you, you've clearly worked hard on uploading all of these clips/episodes and it shows.
First, thanks! Seconds I did a little digging - it was indeed a callback, but not from this particular show. November 3, 1986. Paul introduces his Jim Morrison impression, singing “The Energizer.” November 17, 1986. This show was taped after the November 3 show but not aired until the 17th. Paul again does his “Energizer” impression. November 25, 1986. The Suit of Magnets. Paul deviates from his “The Energizer” with “The Magnetizer.” Probably something no one would have gotten had they not seen the two previous “Energizer” impressions from the two mentioned-previous shows.
Oh, and this: On March 1, 1991, nearly 3 1/2 years later, Robby Kreiger sat in with the band. So Paul trotted out his “Energizer” impression for Robby.
@@dongiller You, sir, are an absolute legend for checking up on that, thank you!! Now I need to see if I can find those in your collection, but if not, perhaps that's an idea to consider for a future clip collection over on your other channel. 😉
If compiling this is not amazing enough already, AND with context when useful (Dave showing outfit to Chris Evert), it is even in chronological order. The Giller can't even _pronounce_ the word lame.
50:39 "this would make a good segment for that guys show. That weasel in California". Who's Dave talking about? Obviously too soon to be after Leno took over The Tonight Show.
The only show I could think of that might've been on at the time was the FOX "Late Show" that used to be hosted by Joan Rivers, then Arsenio Hall, then canceled for "The Wilton North report", but then came back briefly with Ross Shaffer.
How have I not watched this until now? Good gravy. Thanks so much Donz!
Steve Allen, Ernie Kovacs, Johnny Carson, David Letterman. Never a dull moment.
Bill Wendell, the announcer who worked with Ernie compared Dave to Ernie.
Just when you think you've caught up with the consolidation of your collection, Don uploads another collection... Thanks!(truly)
There'll be lots more. :)
17:04....that's why I love Mr. Letterman

Dave said it, many times in interviews. He always credited Allen for the suits.
And Steve has publicly spoken of Dave’s acknowledgement, as seen here at around the 5:50 mark:

I didn't know, I respect your knowledge and thank you for clearing this bit up
@@dongiller he always cited Steve Allen and Ernie Kovacs (and Johnny) as his main inspirations.
could you just isolate that bit with Paul Shaffer imitating Jim Morrison from the Suit Of Magnets? that's one of the funniest things i've ever seen.
I can’t, but nothing’s preventing you from downloading and isolating it yourself.
i remember paul doing that morrison bit when this first aired. might be how i learned about the doors the first time..
This makes me almost glad I'm in self quarantine!
I actually wrote 'The Human Corn Chip' suit stunt... Good times! 🤪
Don Giller, you are my hero.
You need better role models. :)
Hahaha! Honestly, you are doing what most of us wish we would have thought of. Thank you for bringing back the best of Letterman.
You know, when I called the Museum of Broadcasting and asked for the tape of the "Suit of Suet" ... they hung up on me.
I'd forgotten about "Game Warden" Al Frisch.
Also, is it just me, or is the bumper music better the further back in time you go?
Next time, call Don Giller!
God, I miss Dave.
"a grown man just pushed me by the feet"
Been waiting over 30 years for the suit of suet
Classic letterman
I never heard the word "suet" before David Letterman. I never heard that word after that skit, either.
It's a household word in Britain!

Omg !! You’re all fired for not being able to light a marshmallow on fire
I miss the 80s
It was just way cooler and hipper and more fun than today.
Imagine curing a hangover with bottled Dave Letterman Alka-Seltzer.
Alka-Suitser
6:42 Love that song they play when going to commercial, but what is it?
This is beyond.
Will Lee had the best job ever--and the best seat on the show!
51:31 Dave auditions for the Stay Puft marshmallow man
I wonder what it cost the velcro company to get an ad as part of the show?
Like watching the moon landing, these clips.
Anyone know what song that is at 6:43?
Alright Don, got a question. Is there any particular reason Paul chose to sing "The Magnetizer" in the style of Jim Morrison? Or was he just being a silly goose?
Seems self-evident. That probably comes across as snotty, but not intended.

Will Dave float? Will he float?
I've known a few human sponges in my time.
"Sponge!? Who are you calling a sponge!?" lol
50:39 "this would make a good segment for that guys show. That weasel in California".

@dongiller?
This was 1988; Leno took over the Tonight Show in 1992. Definitely not Jay. I've no idea to whom he's referring.
Can't think of who that might've been
The only show I could think of that might've been on at the time was the FOX "Late Show" that used to be hosted by Joan Rivers, then Arsenio Hall, then canceled for "The Wilton North report", but then came back briefly with Ross Shaffer.
This was September 88, Sajak started January 89?
28:05 Isn't that Peggy the foul mouthed chambermaid??
Kathleen Ankers. Yes.
The suit of sponges puts me in the mind of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles.
😂
