SCULPTING a PINE CONE with FIBONACCI GEOMETRY | James Parker Sculpture

- Creating my sculpture of a Pine Cone with perfect Fibonacci geometry. Discussing how and why Fibonacci numbers play an important part in nature and my interperation of the spirals in a Pine Cone. I complete the model before delivering it to Powderhall Bronze Foundry to be cast.
My latest challenge which will be exhibited at Chelsea Flower Show in May, sees me draw on inspiration from maths and nature.
Geometry in nature can be captivating; From the pattern of the petals on a flower, the shells of mollusks and the progression of chords in music. From the formation of spirals in galaxies to the proportions of da Vinci's Vitruvian Man.
It's by no accident that Fibonacci spirals repeatedly appear in nature. The product of millions of years of evolution have lead mother nature to the conclusion that the numbers in a Fibonacci sequence make for the best chance of survival - whether it be to fit as many seeds in a given area, attract pollinators or for one leaf to avoid the shade of another.
For me, abstract forms are often about subtraction. I prefer to focus on those details which capture the essence of a form whilst omitting other 'less important' subtleties thereby producing an uncomplicated, pleasing form. Look closely at the humble pine cone and you'll find intricately formed spirals in both clockwise and counter clockwise directions. The respective number of spirals in each direction are almost always consecutive numbers in a Fibonacci sequence. For example 5 spirals in one direction 8 in the other or 8 and 13, 13 and 21 etc.
I knew this would be a challenge...
I decided early on that these spirals that define the form and were where I ought to devote my attention. Precisely formed pentahedrons recede in the negative space formed between the spirals having the desired effect of bringing the intersecting spirals to the fore.
I'm thrilled with how 'Pine Cone' has turned out. After casting in bronze I look forward to exhibiting it in public at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May.
'Pine Cone' will be a limited edition in bronze cast at 750mm in height with other scaled editions being possible. Should you require any further information please do not hesitate to ask.
Background
As a small child growing up on a farm on the west coast of Scotland I remember the Scot's Pines towering above the house. They'd sway in the omnipresent breeze and occasionally be uprooted and land unnervingly close to our home.
To my 4 siblings and I the neat little pine cones which littered the floor of our woodland playground offered liitle more than convenient ammunition. We'd collect them up before battle commenced and, well... ...we're all here to tell the tale.
The Scot's Pine (Baltic Pine) cone is the type of cone that immediately come to mind when thinking of a cone - like a pointed ovoid with perfect spirals.

I have always loved pine cones, and we used them to throw at each other too. Believe it or not I had a very large pine tree fall, at least the top half down on my fence yesterday. Being 73 now I really couldn’t take care of it myself so a friend came over and helped me clean up the mess. It’s all on a burn pile now. One down and so far two more to go. We had a very large blow through recently. I love to eat pine seeds. I find it very mesmerizing to look at the pine cone. It’s shape, color and the difference in the two. Some times I dip the cone in wax and used them for decorations in a basket in the house. And they make a good fire starter too.
The cycle of life...a pine cone at one end and a fallen tree at the other. Always a good way to keep warm - cutting firewood. I remember we had a huge storm in '87 and were cutting wood for weeks afterwards.

I have had to pause and re-watch this video, there was an awful amount of time even to think about how to approach this, depth, angle and the softness of the lines. amazing even before its cast, OMG imagine it in glass form too.

My math is terrible and I think James you are mostly likely one of the few that has used the math our teachers said we use throughout our lives. Can’t wait to see your completed work. Thank you! Fibonacci numbers begin 0,1 and then after that the next number is always the previous too added together....0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34 etc.

@jamesparkersculpture. Ha, ha...sibling rivalry still alive. No I don't know how. I think Graeme appeals to people because there's no point of comparison. Few do or aspire or have even heard of what he does and it's hard to feel threatened by someone who stands in cow poop all day. People also find his kindness towards animals reassuring. I've heard lots of people use his videos to fall asleep or put their children to sleep. :) There's no diminishing what he's doing... however you are a flipping genius. I can see the probable differences when you were children. You were the thoughtful one. He was a lighter hearted cut up. In one of his videos he toured your old family farm. I know your father passed young and your life was disrupted.... I took in a homeless Scottish man off the streets of NYC where I live and he stayed with me for two years..... but he had a serious problem with alcohol. Tragic. He was one of nine I think.. grew up in Barre and Glasgow. I'm fascinated by Scotland and your family increases that interest. I hope you have faith in yourself...requires a higher brow audience than pus and pain. :)

Always wondered I always drew in spirals. I do a lot of art and crafts. Usually Christmas items and for a lot of them I use pinecones. You forget how we use the spiral sequence in everyday use. You are an extremely talented person.

When the bronze is cast, you can fill the voids with cut glass. Maybe some internal lighting, have to keep going until you put enough time into it! lol

What material is your original? Is it a pre-made block at the beginning? Love your work!
Hi Christina. I made the first version out of mdf - Layering it and binding it to create a block then shaping it with woodworking tools. I took measurements from that piece and then refined the design and machined it on a 5 axis milling machine. The block was created by bonding blocks of M330 foam together.
