During the second world war, Hong Kong was occupied by the Imperial Japanese army for three years and eight months starting on Christmas Day 1941.
Life was hard for people under Japanese rule, with food in short supply and many Hongkongers tortured, raped and murdered by Japanese forces.
Struggling against Japanese occupation were hundreds of Hong Kong people who joined the East River Column, a group of guerrilla soldiers established in China’s southern Guangdong province.
The South China Morning Post spoke with some of the dwindling ranks of East River Column veterans still alive today to hear their little-known stories.
