  • Things get bad before it gets better!!! Moving to nyc alone at 33 (vol.3.) has a lot of ups and downs. After watching so many moving to nyc vlogs, i thought my nyc move would be similar to those vlogs BUT it was the complete opposite.
In this moving to nyc vlog, Ashanti (IG: @_ashantishurat) comes to the rescue and helps to deep clean the apartment, continue to unpack, organize, find out about the cockroach issue (ughhhhh!!!) and update about the pest situation.
Thank you so much Ashanti (IG: @_ashantishurat; / _ashantishurat ) for helping me with the deep clean ❤️.
I really hope you guys enjoy this video!! Thank you so much for all your support! Don’t forget to like and subscribe to my channel.

The landlord is 100% responsible for deep cleaning the apt, painting the walls, changing all batteries, bulbs, etc before the new tenant moves in. You should be able to get your security deposit back since you pretty much had to do all of those things on your own.

You’ll do fine, hon! I lived in NYC for 20 years, moved back to NJ and spent another 20 trying to crawl my way back to Manhattan. I’m here 2 years now, and am thankful every day. There’s no other place on earth like it. As for those cockroaches, caulk like crazy, put tape around the a/c and make sure all your sink drains are plugged tight at night. I do my dishes right away and haven ‘t seen one in months. And, I live on the ground floor, too!

Hi Tisha, thanks for sharing an honest, realistic view of how it is moving to NYC.
It's not all aesthetic with city views......
As far as the cockroaches, make sure you keep up with your treatments. Also, I notice that someone suggested you use boric acid.
If you have an exterminator coming in to treat your unit, I don't suggest using boric acid because the two cancel each other out. ( An exterminator told me this when I moved into my first apartment)
Also, get some oil diffusers for the bedroom, bathroom, and living room space, then load them up with sage essentials oils. Sage keeps most pests away.
Consider smudging once a week as well, and get some eucalyptus for your shower head.
Pests don't like the smell of sage and eucalyptus so this should help, and it will also help your apartment smell amazing!
Once the caulking is finished, though, you should see less activity. It just won't happen overnight, so you gotta be diligent and never leave food out even if it's sealed.
Make sure your sink is BONE DRY since roaches are attracted to water.
Also, consider getting a dehumidifier for your bathroom so you won't have to open your window when showering. This will keep your bathroom from being humid and wet.
    Hope this helps! 🙏🏿
Don't worry, it will get better, so positive thoughts

    • @Jhenenelouis1
      @Jhenenelouis1 Год назад +2

Also, make sure there are no gaps in your front door. If so, consider getting your door sealed. There are BUNCH of options on Amazon.
Also, I echo what everyone is saying on here, your landlord seems to be respectful and responsive, but he needs to give your deposit back or a rent break since you did all that deep cleaning!

      Hi Jhenene,
THANK YOU SO MUCH for such a thoughtful & helpful response ❤Caulking and exterminators have helped! I will definitely look into the other recommendations. Love the idea of getting a dehumidifier for the bathroom. I haven't opened the windows and mainly keep the bathroom door closed (i found most of the big cockroaches in the bathroom) so there isn't much ventilation. Also I have to close the gaps in my main door. Super has been very helpful and responsive fixing all the issues because of which I haven't complained about the situation.

The good news is that you already cleaned up the hardest places to clean, especially under the refrigerator. It’s no wonder there are roaches considering that there were cans of cat food under the refrigerator. The glue traps will be very helpful, not only because they work but it will also give you an idea of how bad the problem is. I can definitely relate to what you are going through because I have been in the same situation. Good luck with everything! 🙏

Those big ones are referred to as waterbugs in NYC. They come up the pipes. I think they actually live outside the building, down by the sewers probably. The advice below about caulking and closing the drains at night is correct. I lived in an apartment that would get them in hot, muggy weather. i didn't like to close the drains, thinking, what if a pipe bursts? So, I just covered the drains with plastic cups. A dark color cup is probably best. I think seeing light attracts them.

What a wonderful friend, to help you with such a fun, lighthearted attitude! I was embarrassed thinking about my fridge even as I was laughing....so...I just went and cleaned under it! I found SIX cat toys and two blueberries. I guess it could've been worse lol! I agree with everyone else that the landlord should give you your deposit back. I was afraid cockroaches would show up because the place was so dirty. They love that. I'm sure you will be okay but from personal experience, what the other commenters said--cover your drains at night, all of them. And also be very stringent about keeping all food that isn't in the fridge well-sealed--preferably in glass jars. I still think it's a great apartment! Good luck!

Lesson learnt for next time! Before I actually move, I will set aside few days for deep cleaning.

lol if you didn't have a pet or had never had one I would not be surprised by your reaction to cat food cans and cat toys under the fridge but you sounded like it was the worst thing ever! cats play with cans and shove them under things, so do dogs you might want to put a guard of sorts under the fridge so those things can't get under there. :) still it was funny to hear your reactions!
I've never heard of a NYC apartment that didn't have roaches but then i dont live there. when you live in a building with other people you're going to have bugs the best thing is to keep roach baits in places out of sight to most, just to be safe! ( i live out in the woods and have all my life, wood roaches are huge and disgusting and i feel dirty when i see one too but i do see them occasionally. yuck!)
If you have time, watch a show called "Joe's Apartment" hopefully its available on youtube and then tell us you have a roach problem hehehehe it was a comedy but seriously he had a problem!
You're doing great and i wish i had a friend like yours she's awesome!

It's not normal to have cans under the fridge in an apartment that is supposed to be cleaned for a new tenant. Also not normal to have that in your current home. And even if you live with a cat, like I do, you should never let dirty stuff accumulate like that anywhere in your home. That's what hygiene habits and a cleaning routine are for.
