i've listened to a countless number of piano players playing this concerto & Helene Grimaud is by far the most authentic player i've ever heard, every time i watch & hear her playing, it gives me shivers, her technique, the emotion, the silences etc etc ... i'd love to see this concerto live one day.

Grimauds interpretation lends the most absolute gripping extrapolation of Rach's intent. Although somewhat late in a femine persuit but lending the listener to what is available to the ear if you know what to is correct. truly an engineer of the soul. Her book "Wild harmonies is encapsulating and an advantage of genius perspective.missed her Seattle debut, but lookiing forward to her continued recovery and more.

Whoever says that Helene Grimaud is not precise, or, God forbid, not musical or anything of the sort is deaf. Period.
One of the most beautiful interpretations of this concerto I have heard. Tempi are stunning, perfect, please no faster, please no slower. Dynamics, phrasing, exceptional. Orchestra plays out of its skin. If anything, Maestro Abbado seems a little cold, but the way the orchestra is playing, who cares how he seems. WELL DONE everyone.

This is a composition that no amount of descriptive language can adequately capture or honor.
For myself, 3 performers express this piece most meaningfully, Grimaud, Argerich, and Nobuyuki Tsujii....the latter a genius out of Japan. His performance, if you take time to watch it (an example is available on RUclips) is extremely moving.

After listening to many of this piece. I really like Helene.... why? Because she adds a dynamic of phrasiology and dynamic musicality.... slowing down slightly at the end of runs..., and she is playing it like a musician instead of "banging it out...." I have not heard anyone play with her unique style... she also really becomes one with the orchestra ..... just right volumes and tempos! Not robotic! I love her!

Such a pity that they fell out and that she refused to appear on the same platform together ever again. The bone of contention was over a cadenza in Mozart's 23rd Piano Concerto, Ms Grimaud insisted on the one by Busoni whereas Abbado wanted the original one by Mozart. There could be no compromise between two of such strong charater.

    • @TheMarcHicks
      @TheMarcHicks 2 года назад +1

@@Jon908584 which seems extremely odd given that the whole purpose of a cadenza was for it not to be tied to the demands of the composer....but was a chance for the soloist to show off their chops.

I had been listening to this masterpiece conducted by Abbado for the past couple of months when I needed a hype. Comparing this to other performances and with my untrained ear, I can definitely feel the difference of Abbado's touch and the dynamics he brings to the performance. I's sad to see he is gone now.

Commenting on just this 1st movement:
Mr Abbado has always had a marvelous way with Rachmaninoff, and here he, and his orchestra are the perfect partner to the wonder Ms Grimaud.
Her playing is so unforced, always beautiful, and in service to the composer. He lovely 1st stating of the 2nd theme has such beautiful pacing, and ebb and flow.
Hers is playing that reaches INSIDE, yet never loses momentum, or is ever rushed.
A beautiful, elegant, musical, and when need be exhilarating 1st movement. Beautiful playing by all sections of the orchestra.
    On to the 2nd movement!

My love of classical music began in the early 1960’s while babysitting for a family that had a pretty extensive collection of classical music and a Magnavox console stereo (or hi-fi?). I somehow stumbled on a record of Rachmaninov’s 2nd piano concerto and my life was forever changed! I listened to it multiple times each time I went to babysit and to this day it still am breathless whenever I hear this magical piece. I have over 300 classical cd’s in my collection and they still continue to bring me joy...

Mr. Abaddo's treatment of this piece is just beyond extraordinary. The only thing on par with this performance is Ms. Grimaud's genius at the piano and her brilliant pianistic interpretation. Thankfully, this perfomance has been digitally captured for all to experience if they so choose.

I just enjoy perceiving the layers of the music, each one separately, in this awesome masterpiece. The harmonies evoke reely deep emotions. The combination of harmony, passion, emotional lanscape and extraordinary performance is just mesmerizing!

This orchestra is incredible. Each one of them is playing as passionately as if they were soloists. It's amazing to watch.

I studied conducting in university and was always taught that the downbeat was "down". But I notice that many European conductors have their stick high in the air like Abbado on the 1st beat. I asked a conductor about this and was told that it's a stylistic thing--the orchestra just manages to follow regardless of where the stick is. You learn after a while that success in conducting is as much about personality, charisma, and especially "connections" as it is about musicianship.

This is one of the few pieces that makes me cry every time I listen to; it gets inside you from the first notes to last.
    Sergej was a magician.
