- EDIT: My apologies, the F-16 does indeed have rockets. I rarely use them, hence the omission. This is due to carrying two fuel tanks for endurance.
this video I discuss the pros and cons of the F-16 and F-18 as modules. I cover the basics of what they can do and which I prefer. This is a as a result of reading, daily, requests for "which module should i get". Hopefully this helps.
Thanks.
Might be good idea to make an updated video since F-16 got lots of updates since this video was originally made.
This
A little update for those who watch this now: The 16 got updated a lot and now has everything the hornet has. Only disadvantages for the Viper: Not carrier capable, can‘t carry 12 a/a missiles, only 6 and it doesn‘t has an internal jammer, you need the jammer pod. Both are extremely similar, but the Viper is just sexier than the Hornet.
f16 - designed while listening to pilots for pilots, very good engineering, especially with regards to human - machine interface. result: to his date, the best cost effective successful jet ever made.
F/A 18 (legacy) , not even in the same category, main focused was probably for maintenance & reliability (especially compare to the f-14),
human - machine interface, not even close (at some cases almost feels like - "F*the pilots"), mostly design for AG, while AA - 21/23, at the most
(AA was mainly for the F14's)
so in my opinion
F16 can truly deliver the multi role experience.
F/A 18 (legacy) , mostly for AG, while only advantage is the (""top gun"") carrier experience.
super hornet wish it was available, but due to obvious classified information, not in near future.
@@Smuth_Op Wouldn‘t say the hornet is like pure A/G but I know what you mean. Rhino would in fact be really cool to have. What shocks me every time about the Viper is the amount of ordnance it carries. 6 Mavericks plus 6 cbu 97s. All that with such a small airframe and efficient but extremely strong engine.
@@Smuth_Op Also yeah it was a huge improvement to the tomcat. She was huge, drank fuel like nothing and (at least the B) didn‘t have good A/G stuff except for dumb bombs.
Glad I own both. Just happy when every DCS patch comes out, and I see what goodies got added or fixed.
Love the conclusion I draw from the video. Fly the F14 😂😂
Yup 🤣🤣
F14 is trash
@@KiloWhiskey716 you lie!!
I salute you and your love of flatspins
Ha
@@KiloWhiskey716 what the hell man just don’t say anything at all if you can’t say anything nice
Love the Viper, it’s something “I know”. Wish it was a bit more mature in DCS. It’s getting there... Actually the F16 can land on the carrier, it can’t stop on a carrier!
actually, you can land just fine if you do it right. Only problem is that some parts might fly off on impact.
@@pancake4061 I mean, if it's an emergency landing then technically its the proper use of the tailhook. lmao
A few more differences (in favor of the F-16) that you missed - F-16 can carry CBU-97 anti-tank cluster bombs, F-18 cannot. F-16 can use ILS for bad-weather landings, F-18 cannot (except on carriers). F-16 can go Mach 2+ and pull 9g during combat, F-18 cannot keep up. F-16 is a superior rate fighter, F-18 is not. All critical systems on the F-16 can be fully controlled via its HOTAS, F-18 cannot. I say all of these things not because I'm an F-16 "fan boy", but just to make the comparisons more complete. I own both, and have struggled for months to decide which I prefer ... at the moment, it's the F-18, mostly for the larger screens, superior HUD layout (in my opinion) ... but oh how I love that F-16's thrust and speed!
Jep, both have their advantages for their respective environments.
You also forgot to mention that the cbu-97 is the coolest bomb in the game
@@moosetracks656 Haha I agree!
DCS World. There are lots of forums with recommended specs. I don’t want to lead you astray.
I mean the f-18 has the highest turn rate in the sim, and if you don’t mind dropping your wings you can try your luck with the paddle switch
The F-16 has a more ergonomic cockpit. More convenient system management. It is even more convenient to use his 2 displays, which are smaller in size than 3 hornet displays, for example.
The F-16 desperately needs the HARMS and the HTS Pod.
I believe they are in the making
It currently does. F-16 is way better than the F-18 which kind of blew my mind.
@@saucejohnson9862 better at what
I like flying the Hornet more but the F16 is the best looking plane ever made if you ask me :) With the F16 I spend more time in external view than than the cockitview.
it has even the best looking cockpit, love the clean view that it has
The intake on bottom always throws me off, I’d probably give best looks to the f14 or the su-37
We need an updated comparison from you on these two at current 2.8 version level!
In my opinion it's a great time to learn Viper while stuff is missing, so long as you're an active DCS player. Things probably won't all change at once, it will be gradual. So there's actually a big advantage to starting the module now and not being too overwhelmed and being able to somewhat master what there currently is, and then just add on to that knowledge when changes and additions are made.
I agree!
The F-16 is my first high fidelity module and i learnt everything of it in 2 months and now mavericks are coming and i only have to learn them new but the systems behind them (TGPOD) and i have bought the F-18 later and its way more difficult to learn because its more comolex :)
@@Lxcx333 I wuna get the f-16 as my first mod but am worried about the fuel time.
@@gamer-1100 you dont have to!
As long you dont fly with afterburner on you can stay a long time in the air, not as long as other jets but still a lot and you have air refueling :)
I have the F16 F18 and A10C and i would recommend you to start with the F16 because its ez to learn and ez to master compared to the other jets. But when you can only buy 1 for the next 6 months i would recommend you the F18 because its pretty ez to learn but hard to master because it can do a lot of things and the systems are way more complex than in the F16 :)
@@Lxcx333 which aircraft would you say is better for air to air fighting F-16 or f-18.
18, it can carry much more.
u needed to touch on the price as well.. and for a full f-18 exp u probably need to buy the supercarrier with extra cost.. the viper will probably have an extra cost kinda with the syrian map.
and the VR cockpit in the f-18 is so big compared to the viper.. plus there is no pilot body yet in the viper "D
all and all a good clip , enjoyed it!
Subscribed following the amazing live stream over the weekend. I hope you guys raised a ton for the charity.
Thank you, we raised over £5400 for MIND. Thank you for watching and helping us drive on when it got tough.
F-18 is slightly more universal, F-16 is slightly more agile I believe. Also F-18 can (already?) carry cruise missiles and glide bombs.
Yes it can
That was quite useful. One more thing I think might be worth mention, and if you have a high-end PC, you might not notice. When I tried both of them during the free trial, F-16 was running much worse on my system. Stuttering a lot. F-18 on the other hand was running much more smoothly so I ended up buying it. I did upgrade my RAM since then, so maybe F-16 would run OK now (from 8 to 16 GB).
In real life, I like F-16 more though :) But in DCS, F-18 seems like a much more mature module. There's so much stuff to do in DCS it's probably better to wait until F-16 is, well, less incomplete.
Yeah, once they add all the A/G and JHMCS features, the F-16 will be the superior jet for me. I agree with most of what you said, but I've starting flying the viper more than the Hornet after the mavericks got added. It's just the more fun aircraft.
@@hudsonr.218 Yeah, Viper is just somehow cooler :)
The F-16 does have Rockets
It does indeed, my mistake. I’m used to having two bags of fuel where they go 👍
@@TacticalPascale yeah you dont really use rockets all that much in the f16c in my experience. And I'd probably take more fuel over rockets any day in the f16c. Correction on my end you can now carry them on pylons 3 and 7 I dont remember when you were able to do that but apparently you can now.
I finally joined multiplayer! (Thx to you)
Excellent, you'll have much more fun.
Strangely infound multiplayer easier than single player. A lot of the single missions are really tough wheras multiplayer you kind of just get used to flying in a combat environment and pivking your own weapons and role
This video needs an update. Love your content pascal!
I think I will update a few
Awesome as always, TP
Cheers bud.
F-16 can carry cbu-97/105 and in TER. Also the F-16 can carry 4 AIM-120C missiles with external tanks, TGP and bombs/A2G missiles while the F-18 can be loaded with 2 AIM-9 and 1 AIM-7/120 TGP, external tanks and bombs/a2g missiles.I see the F-18 more oriented to strike missions while the F-16 feels better for CAS
"Hey, what's that F-14 doing there..."
Watch it all the way and see why 😁
I had to comment again
Best damn video and this is HOW IT SHOULD HE DONE take note people
The F16 vs F-18 is a funny old thing. I prefer flying the F-16 but "Fighting" the F-18 if that makes any sense. I find in straight up BVR the F-16 is better, same for SEAD or dumb weapons, but when you get into close engagements or for semi stand off attacks (like mavs etc) I find the F-18 much easier to use. In theory the F-16 is far superior for SEAD/DEAD able to carry two HARMs and six Mavericks for a sortie, but in practice the mavs requiring boresighting on a cold start to use with a Tpod and consistent bugs (from Mavs day one I've had a bug where all the symbology apart from the slew cursor dissapears until it's locked- every mode, with or without a tpod. Can still lock things but without any cues as to where the boresight is on the screen it's really hard work!) just makes the Hornet nicer to work with using a mix of Harms and JDAMs.
In close I find the workload on the F-16 confusing. Guns mode works fine with the ability to change close in radar modes but switching to missile mode the radar seems to stop working completely, wheras on the hornet the boresight, line etc. radar modes all work on the F-18 intuitively. Which is a pretty big deal when you find yourself in an unexpected dogfight.
I find these two modules similar enough that one can easily learn both. Much of the one applies to the other. They do have some fun differences beyond the FA-18's ability to be carrier operated. The F-16 is a speed demon but sucks at low speed. The FA-18 is not as fast but handles beautifully at slow speeds.
At the moment I'm attempting to decide between the F-14, F-16 and F/A-18 but I'm a bit stumped at this point. I'm looking for something that can dominate in air to air but which offers the ability to perform effective ground strikes should need arise or should I just fancy sharing the love with our ground based friends. Admittedly it hadn't occurred to me to look at the capability of conducting SEAD missions, I'll have to read up on whether or not the Tomcat is capable of doing this. At the moment I'm leaning more towards the F-14 (wish they'd include the D variant) or F-16 but the Hornet is by no means out of the running.
Thank you for the comparison video, to me it says a lot when you're already at a stage you can foresee the Hornet spending more time on the deck than off it.
The F-14 A2G requires a human Rio, or you to jump between slots.
F-18 is very capable all round, SEAD and Anti ship too.
I was stuck with the exact same problem mate...
Had all of them for a 14 day trial and ended up buying the F-14 (For carrier action and Zone 5 Campaign) and the F-16 (as my go-to module).
Driving the F-14 with my best friend and the F-16 when I'm solo - never looked back :-)
I mean I prefer the 16 for dogfighting, like you really don't need a whole bunch of missles like the 18 because your not heavy and you should be only merged with one fighter (I don't why your attempting to fight multiple fighter... like c'mon guys it's not real life) but the 18 is good for ground strikes, and maybe Mig and J-11 killers.
You didn't mention the most important point, "In a 1v1 between a 16 and 18 which is better?..." I feel like this video will age quickly with the list of updates on the way.
I bought the F16 a few months ago for the same reasons as you, then I found out exactly how early access it was and now only take it out for a joy ride once a week or so. In hindsight I probably should have skipped both and got a Tomcat, - a more finished module, awesome aircraft, and carrier ops.
Tune in this Friday to see an 18 v 16 dogfight.
Really the decision goes to if your a Navy boy or an Airforce boy. Both are capable aircraft, but it's ultimately pilot skill that determines many fights (obviously to a certain extent, probably not pilot skill when a F/A-18 kills a Spitfire from BVR with AAMRAMS lmao). Theoretically the 18 is a better ground striker because it was designed for multirole and the 16 is multirole out of doctrine changes but again both are capable enough for any mission you'd put them through.
I bought both within a week. The F18 feels much nore complete and well put together, where the F16 feels like a flying go kart with additional hardware welded on to it
whats wrong with walleyes? They're one of the biggest and best semi-guided munitions you can lob in DCS. You loft them right, you can lob them over 20 miles over mountains, and guide them manually to the target if you get good at it.
The last six words 😁😁
@@TacticalPascale thats just like everything else in DCS...but this is like lobbing a 2000lb AGM65 like a boss.
Great to get some feedback on this, some years later. Which do you prefer now?
The F-16 can't carry GPS guided bombs yet! And the Mavericks are coming soon for the Falcon
soon™
@@svmik trademark ahahahaaa
Good one
not to mention the viper also has rockets
As I mentioned in my edited description, because I forgot because I take fuel on those pylons 🤣🤣
I own the Viper and the Hornet, but for ground attack, i prefer the JF-17. This fighter has no chance in dogfight vs other 4th generation, but is very easy to use. I play it has a "super" A10C. The guided rockets BRM 90 are very effective...
I concur with recent comments, we NEED an updated comparison video since so much has changed!
If I wanna land on the carrier I prefer my Harrier! Lol quick question, does the F16 a2a refuel behind cockpit did I see?
Yes it does, the fuel port is on top behind canopy.
I cant wait until Jester can use the LANTIRN pod on the 14. I know you can mod it so its usable up front but it feels wrong, and it borked my controls once.. so i'm a bit wary about doing it again. I love the F-16. but its still got a way to go. the F18 with its 8 Spammrams feels a bit like cheating :)
I somehow doubt heatblur will add lantern to jester. Oh well. It's a fantastic fighter. Why play in the mud?
@@ra803g6 Because it can?

Hilarious, I was looking a videos all night bought the f16 and wake up to another review ! Awesome content honestly the best review on here. Others are constant kiss assing Ed or bashing them.
Cheers. Enjoy the 16, she’s an unfinished Joy.
Tactical Pascale thank you, started on falcon 4.0, it’ll get that man i doubt they’ll keep it unfinished that’s just highway robbery! Hopes up I’m enjoying
ED completely won me over with these two modules. These are not than sims, these are digital records of history. Expensive? Yes. But worth it especially considering creation of history
My first mod was f18 and I have f16 as well. I was asking myself if I could go back time which first module would I choose. I would go f18. I think the internal fuel capacity, able to use most air to ground weapons (especially able to use AGM 84 e,d and H) and carrier operations are the top reasons. I'd say get both they are both fun.
Important:
The F-16 has Rockets (but you will never use it)
F-16 gets Mavericks (up to 6) and AGM-88Cs so it gets the same A/G missiles as the F-18 :)
F18 has agm154, i wish they would add them to f16 but it doesnt look like it
F 16 looks cool
Hi there, i'm here watching in march 2021 just before (i hope) the Easter sales! So, how the situation is changed after these months? The F-16 (IIRC) has got a bunch of A2G weapons, including harms and mavericks: should be preferrable now, compared to the Hornet - excluding carriers - ?
No, the Hornet is still far more developed
Hey! i've gone through a lot of comments & your video ofcourse. I believe there's some updates on the F-16 module?
DCS Halloween sale is up and i can buy just one module.
Can someone, who owns both, make this decision for me?
P.S. The only other high fidelity module I have is the M2000. (and the community A4e, which isn't really a high fidelity module).
Thanks!
There are updates. I enjoy both modes, but the F-16, despite being less capable, is my favourite.
@@TacticalPascale Thanks, I shall go for the F16 then. Cheers!
@@spinbirdman I agree. Although the F/A-18 can do more, there is just something about the F-16 that keeps bringing me back to it. I just love the Viper. I haven't even really touched the F/A-18 since the maverick update for the F-16.
Can´t comprehend why the Viper has no moving map! But I think a third display would be neccessary for that. So having a block 60 or block 70 Viper would be amazing, but that´s wishful thinking.
Yes mate, for me the f-16 it’s the more iconic figther jet ever : ). Great Vid!!
Other important points worth mentioning with the F18 are, you can fly with a friend and in a few month, heathblure is releasing the Eurofighter. If you've bought the F16 you have no plane enabled to land on carriers, the Eurofighter is way better than the Viper and you can't fly with a friend.
You can’t fly multicrew in the F18, you can in the 14.
@@TacticalPascale oh, my fault. I talked about the F18 super hornet
The F-16 doesnt carry GPS guided munitions at the moment
I know, I apologise for the mistake in the next video regarding LGB’s in the F-16
In April 2022 for a new sim and new dcs player. Would you recommend the hornet or the viper? Or maybe something else?
Whichever you prefer. They’re all very good
Bottom line - Enjoy and save your money and buy both on sale. Christmas will be good this year. It is all a matter of patience, I believe both should be finished by the end of the year or soon after.
Do you know around when the christmas sale will be? I recently ordered a joystick and if it's not already over it'd be great to be able to buy something for less than $80 to fly with it.
I don’t unfortunately

What is your favorite now and can you tell me why?
The cockpit view of the F-16 is incredible, and it is pretty manœuvrable!
But the F18 can land on carrier too...

Just be a smart buyer and understand both aircraft are still early access.
F16 should have smoke pods!!!
The F-16 is suppose to have superb air to ground capability right? Since it is an air force jet...
Both are an option.

Not really by the time youve learned all the systems that are currently implemented there will be new things for it which is usefull when learning, unless off course you think the hornet is cooler that is
Started with the F16 too and a friend with the F18 almost at the same time, I give him a run for his money in the 16. Love it. And while you can learn the 16, there will always be coming some new things so you can learn it step by step

The F-16 always, it's a Pure Fighter, not a track , like the other one.
Not to be a wet-blanket here, but you might want to revise this video. A lot. There are a lot of inaccuracies based on guesses & misinformation.
-F-16 *CAN* carry AIM-7s. They just don't. Remember the Viper entered service 13 years before the AMRAAM.
-F-16 *CAN* carry 6 AIM-120s, not 4, and yes, you would want to use 6 on a lengthy BARCAP.
-F-16 does *NOT* currently have GPS guided bombs in DCS.
-F-16 does *NOT* have more endurance because of only one engine, and in fact lacks a lot of the fuel management that the Hornet does. tl;dr: you're flying it wrong.
-The ground radar in the Hornet is functionally useless, and is not an advantage at present.
Something to note: The Hornet *ONLY* has "ILS" for the carrier, not shore-based airfields. So, in bad conditions, you'd have to do a non-precision TACAN approach in the Hornet whereas the Viper has an actual ILS system.
Not trying to be a dick, but if you want to make a reputation for providing reliable and accurate information on your channel, you might want to redo this one. Trying to help.
The Viper does not carry aim 7 in DCS. If you’re carrying 6 amraams YOU’RE flying it wrong. I have never once controlled a fighter that flew with only active missiles, ever. Every QRA aircraft or combat sortie the fighter has carried a mixture of Fox-3 and Fox-2, occasionally Fox-1. The only time they have not carried a Fox-3/2 load is when they can’t, for example the Hawk.
There are mistakes, this is because I simply forgot. However, in my experience of flying both platforms the Viper has much better endurance than the Hornet. Regarding my “reputation”, I’m simply trying to help, hence an entire community, Tactical DCS, that has been created. There will be mistakes in videos, I’m human.
@@TacticalPascale I guess these guys are flying it wrong worldwar3battles.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/generaldynamics-f16-fightingfalcon.jpg ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@DasPenguin85 Yeah most DCS Players think they know better than the pilots that fly IRL. Just because you don't carry 6 AMRAAMS in your airplane game doesn't mean that real pilots don't. Don't get me wrong, I love DCS to its core, despite its bugs and lackluster optimization. But it really annoys me when I see people on the forums and youtube comments telling people how to fly, even when they have no real world experience. It's still a game.
EDIT: I just reread my comment, and it came off a little bit passive-aggresive. I still think that this channel is good, its just important to stay humble, and remember that you are not always right (including me).
@james v @possum works Real pilots don’t unless training. If the radar breaks then they are carrying dead weight.
Real life experience: how does over 15 years of controlling fighter aircraft from multiple nations, UK and US mainly. Never once on ANY operational mission did they carry only active missiles.
Ever.
Ever QRA mixed load.
f16 obv
Navy gang
F14 all the way. None of the air to air compromises of the f18 plus you still land on the boat. Aim 9x is the only big advantage of f18 over f14. And yes, nose pointability goes to f18. Yeah, the f18 can carry Amrams but it's slow top speed hinders optimal operation.
If you don't care about ground attack much, f14 is the best.
Just buy the harrier ez
🇧🇩
You take 6 AIM-120's, because if you need to use an AIM-9, you've fucked up. There is no reason to take AIM-9's, if you can put a 120 on the pylon.
Total nonsense. Name a single fighter that takes off with only active missiles. In all my years of controlling aircraft I have never once controlled one that took off with only active.
F16 can carry rockets, and the so called huge advantage of current implementation of ground radar is exaggerated.
