What generation of systems are being used is a much bigger factor than which airframe they are attached to. Basically, if we are comparing a current FA-18F to a 1980s F-16 the viper is going to be in big trouble in BVR. That said, literally nothing more than his assessment of the BFM probability was told to me. He won’t say anything: literally anything about what systems are in any of the jets he flew. Not missiles, radars, nothing. So beyond his basic opinion (based in his experience in both jets) of the BFM fight I have no insight into what would happen if a hornet fought a viper. And I think it’s reasonable to say that, unless you’re privy to secret information about fighter capabilities you can’t really have an informed opinion either. You can read everything published and all you will have are a large collection of assumptions about what the capabilities are.

The Hornet had multiple opportunities, but it seemed it simply failed in the aiming part. These kills were not for granted for the Viper.
