    You’re telling me a frameless backpack with no hip belt is uncomfortable when stacked up with multiple beers, a saw, fishing pole, BRIDGE HAMMOCKS, and a chair? Who would of thought.

  • @liteafllc4482
    @liteafllc4482 4 года назад +7

    Sounds like Andy needs a larger pack with a frame for all the added weight from the beers. Haha!!
    We have experimented with larger shoulder strap pockets that fit a 1 L bottle. The problem is when you lower the shoulder strap pocket your arm hits the bottom of the bottle. When you raise the shoulder strap pocket the bottle becomes too high and right next to your face... just carry a smaller bottle. 🤣
    I would recommend 20 lbs or less with a frameless no hip belt pack. 25 lbs or less with a frameless pack with a full padded hip belt.
    Thanks guys!

    That's wild that you guys were loading those things up that heavy. I can believe that wasn't comfortable. Why didn't you take your arc hauls with frame? I just ordered a curve 30L for fast and light. Can't wait, gonna be waiting a while lol.

    I just received a 46L with the new Ultra fabric and tried it out today. It is a phenomenal pack. The only thing I would change is a taller water bottle pocket, because they're just a bit too short for the 1L smartwater bottles. But those shoulder straps are absolute heaven. More comfortable than any other pack I've ever worn.

    I purchased the 40 w/suspension early this year. Just arrived. No field test yet. Need the volume for winter loads. Summer I can get by with the Zpacks Nero. Chris at LiteAF was great to work with!

    A bit off topic but: I minimized my First-aid kit. I used colored Straws to load in things like Triple antibiotic ointment, Pain relivers, even Q-tips. If you hold the straws with a needle nose plyers and burn/Melt the end, it seals. Load your item and do the same on the other end. I keep a color chart in my kit to tell what is what. "Altoids" holds a lot of stuff, depending on your needs. Save the weight.

    The smaller smart water bottle is 750ml, same as a bottle of bourbon! 😁
    I carry 2 one liters on the side and one 750 on the front that I drink from and refill from the 1 liter bottles.

    This was a really genuine review. I had been looking forward to making the Shill pun based off your name, but that pun will elude me this time. Never had a LiteAF pack but knowing how easy Chris is to work with and contact from there, I'm sure he can make packs based off your "cons" of the packs. Looking forward to seeing how Andy likes the new pack he orders from LiteAF. It is an inevitability at this point.

    I have the Mountain Laurel Designs Prophet 48 frameless pack. It has a sweet hip belt built in standard and very comfortable shoulder straps. It totally takes ALL the weight off of my shoulders! Rolling and cinching down the pack's roll top makes the pack stiff enough so I can actually loosen my shoulder straps so that the pack leans away from my back so the airflow keeps my back cool! I've carried up to 25 to 28 lbs with this frameless pack + belt and I think its as comfortable as my Z-Packs Arc Haul pack.

    • @muphart
      @muphart 2 года назад

      It is impossible for a frameless pack to take all, or even most, of the weight off your shoulders. If there is no frame rigidly connected to a hip belt, the pack will be hanging from your shoulders, no matter how stiff you pack it. Not calling you a liar, but I don't want people to get the wrong idea about frameless packs.

    • @kirkrozelle1900
      @kirkrozelle1900 2 года назад

      @@muphart I know what you are saying and the typical argument. My experience is otherwise. If the pack is cinched down tight it forms a rigid structure with its contents as a monolith. This allows the pack to "stand up" from the hips held tight by the hip belt.

    Great review you two, I have the Gossamer gorilla 40 I absolutely love it, wish it had a roll top but it still does a great job, not sure if I could go without the aluminum stay as I tend to carry about 25 pounds of weight overall.

    You guys have so much knowledge, experience and access to good equipment. I'm not sure I understand why you choose to carry a frameless pack designed for ultralight backpacking and then load it with fun stuff like chairs and beer (which I agree are fun) to 30 lbs and hike in discomfort. Shouldn't you just be using packs designed for the load? I'm tempted by the siren call of ultralight, too, but I question whether I should get such a frameless pack if I'll not shave my load out down to bare bones -- 6, 7, 8 lbs bw -- and be comfortable on trail (even if less so in camp). I do appreciate all the info, guidance and solid backpacking entertainment you guys put out. It's helped me learn a lot over the last couple years.

    Hi guys. I have a question from a couple of your recent videos. You mentioned/raved about a pair of pants that are super comfortable for wearing around the house all day in these Covid times. I had a note to check them out, but lost the note. Can you tell me the name of those pants? Keep the podcasts coming. Your Friday Night Lockdown shows have been awesome. That's at least one good thing that came out of this pandemic:) There's nothing else around that matches the real-time connectivity with the backpacking community . I may need some recommendations for some Binford equipment;)

    Great honest review. I'm looking at getting one but already have the Arc Haul as well. I never get close to filling it which is good for those winter or longer hikes I suppose. I was also thinking about getting the multi day pack if possible just to make myself take as little as possible and leave the beers at home in the summer.10 to 12 to 15 ;-) lol

    I have the 30 ltr curve with a removable hip belt. So you could have a hip belt on your 35. I'm small so my packed clothing is smaller. I'm older too thus the hip belt.

    Good video. I've been eyeing up the 40L with suspension. Looking for something a bit smaller than the Arc Haul. Did you say they are the same size? The Arc hauls main compartment is advertised as 49L. Are they really the same size? If so, I'd get the 35L.

    • @rodrev_hiking6757

      Go with the 40l suspension LiteAF . Have it and love it more than my HmG Southwest 3400.
      Can roll it down when u go with less stuff and in winter or longer tours you have that extra space .
      Also u can’t buy a 35l suspension.
      So no hipbelt but you can attach a Fanny or small hipbelt from liteaf.
      But the 40l suspension pack is more versatile , u can also remove the aluminum frame stakes and make it frameless and shave off some ounces . Buy the 40l fs ;)

      as a seasoned vet, I think you would NEVER be unhappy with your decision. It really sucks getting something that is almost. And then rebuying (like me) In my opinion simplicity is KING and this size weight carry and company checks every box. This pack is where people in the know end up. Save yourself a lot of money and just start here.

    I bought the 40L w/suspension and because of your previous reviews I ask them to design a removable and different sizes shoulder pouch, but I guess I am not as famous as you guys to get something customized, even though it would have benefit the design.

    • @rodrev_hiking6757
      @rodrev_hiking6757 3 года назад +1

      U can customize a lot on a LiteAF pack even the shoulder straps get tailored to you . Chris always asks for torso size .
      I’ve ordered a 40L FS and gave him my Hip circumstance, chest and torso size .
      You can customize if or without shoulder pockets / water bottle holders .
      You can’t whatsoever change the size of the pockets or make them removable/ detachable.
      No one can do that if you are popular or not everyone gets served in the same manner .
      To lower the shoulder strap pockets is not possible since your arm would than touch the bottle consistently while walking .
      Making them bigger has the same effect .
      Adjusting the bottle holders higher would result in the bottle sticking in your face .
      Just use 0,5l for Bottles and 1l on the huge ass pockets at the side of the Pack .
      :)
