Having ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) is almost guaranteed in a car, but it's just becoming more popular in motorcycles. Why is that and should motorcycles have ABS? I recently heard some fellow riders talking about this and while some said they'd never buy a bike without ABS, others said if they didn't have the option to turn it off, they wouldn't want it. What are your thoughts? Do you think ABS should be standard on all motorcycles? What are your experiences with it if your bike has it? Let me know in the comments!

Doesn't matter how talented you are though, ABS will save you in the rain.
Good topic, seems like almost all bikes now have optional abs
I don't have abs but i think it would be nice.
One situation which comes to mind, where abs would have helped, was a wet night when i was riding home. Fucking possum ran out at the last second. Only just missed it. Was breaking so hard that my front locked up for a fraction of a second.
i fell like beginners should have ABS on their bike but if youre a skilled rider and you know what to do in an emergency situation, you shouldnt need it but it could still be useful
My personal opinion is, I would choose to not have abs, I have learned to ride without it but I'm sure if I grew up with it like new generations will I'm sure they'll prefer it to have abs.
Not saying I'm a pro rider, but I trust myself.
abs is good for making crazy emergency brakes . i rode a bike with abs for my motorcycle lessons , got a bike without abs now and don't really feel the difference to be honest . this is my opinion ofcourse .
In short, I wish I was a racer. I don't settle for practicality. I figure if I ever ride at the track (hopefully soon) I will already be much improved from the aggressive seating position of an R6, full gear, practicing without ABS, etc. I love riding and I pretty much sacrifice practicality for riding experience. However, I'm very conscious in regards to safety. I'm really split on the topic...I know it could save me from crashing, but I KNOW I'll rely on it if I have it and it takes away from
I just crashed yday and I know ABS would have saved me a crash. Car turned left in front of me...I accelerated a LOT and swerved, avoiding the car, but then had to slow down because the traffic ahead of the intersection was moving much slower. I locked the front and was thrown off. BUT, I don't want ABS on motorcycle because I know it will dumb me down. I like having to have the responsibility of the brake. It gives me more of a connection to the motorcycle and driving/riding experience.
I learned riding on a 2013 Honda CB500 and a 2013 CB600F both with ABS (at my driving school / MSF course thing, it's totally different here in Germany but whatever) and I'm really scared to buy my first own bike that doesn't have ABS because they're so damn expensive over here, I can't afford it as a student :-/
ABS lowers your risk of highsiding or what it's called when you have to fully brake.
It also avoids your front tire from blocking, which is definately a HUGE plus. Almost every rider
By what I was taught, ABS is affective in limited situations. A car's ABS is best for stopping on ice, thick grass and pavement. On snow, gravel, sand and dirt, ABS is not best because locking the wheels or braking harder than ABS allows for the tires to dam the ground beneath it, ABS cannot. Simply put, with skill and awareness, threshold braking can match ABS's strong points. The only benefit of motorcycle ABS is tire locking prevention, nothing more. Surfaces are no safer with either brake.
I talked with a guy at a local motorcycle dealership once who recomends ABS for beginners. Then, once you know what you're doing, he does not recommend having it. For me personally, I would really want it on the motorcycles I end up getting, but think that each bike should have an off switch for the system. I don't necessarily want it on all the time, and I don't see why manufacturers don't give an off-switch more often.
Yes, ABS is strictly to prevent the wheels from locking during hard braking. Traction control sometimes does use the ABS system to apply brakes to certain wheels (in a car) to slow them down to aid traction.
I think ABS should be standard on street motorcycles, dual sports, and maxi scoots of 200cc and larger. There should be an option to disable it if necessary, a switch at extra cost at time of purchase. I have ABS on mine, and I wouldn't buy a bike without it.
I don't know why, but I don't like driver aids at all. I know that they're helpful tools on your belt, but it makes me feel like I don't have the skill to properly drive the vehicle. I know it's stupid, but I like to know that I can have full control of the vehicle whether it has driver aids or not.
Believe it or not, it makes me feel more safe.
I know that rides a non ABS bike tells me they never ever gonna ride a bike with ABS cause the won't miss the "connection to the bike" but seriously...if you're used to ride a bike with ABS...your brake feels just like the way it feels and there has to be more pros than cons because even the MotoGP uses ABS on their bike by now.
how is that R6 for longer rides? When I sat on it at the dealers it felt like it bit into the thighs, but I am a short guy 5'7" so that might be part of it.
In Loving Memory of the SV.. you left your blinker on Lol sorry I had to. Watched so many of your videos. Just bought a SV650 with abs. If it ever puts me down or saves my ass I'll be sure to fill you in. Wasn't looking for abs just the only naked blue SV I could find east of the Mississippi.
My bike (2012 Iron 883) does not have ABS brakes as an option - wish it did (but it brakes fine, not a deal breaker)
I think there is no need for ABS on motorcycles. I think it dumbs down the motorcycle and basically says by however put them on that we don't trust you to know how to brake so we are going to do it for you. I don't think it should be standard and I never want to ride/buy a bike that has it.
I've never riden a bike with ABS but it seems like a lot of the new ones are coming with it standard. As long as there is a setting which lets you turn it on/off I don't see it as a bad thing.
The only negative thing I've noticed about ABS is the effect it has on the cost of the bike.
To be honest i like ABS. It is surely something that is handy IF you come into a situation that can be dangerous. 95% of the time you ride you don't need it and it doesn't do anything. But if you need it it will maybe save you. So i would surely support the idea that all bikes in the future got ABS.
If they ever made ABS a standard must have for motorcycles you could always defeat it the same way you would in a car, by pulling the fuse. Honestly I don't understand how anyone could have anything against ABS. Its proven tech. Shorter stops under emergency conditions.
My ninja 650 is my first bike. I chose it specifically for the abs. Most of the people who say they brake better than abs are kidding themselves. When its a life and panic situation, abs is worth any amount. On a race track it might be different.
I think on a dry road it isn't really necessary, but it doesnt hurt. On a wet surface however it's amazing, its absolutely a life saver... So thats a yes, and i really approve of it ;-)
You gave an example about going offroad but what your talking about is traction control, ABS prevents te wheels to block. Or did I understand something wrong? :D nice vid keep going btw
I think ABS should be for heavy bikes. Some kind of help stopping a 800lbs of bike would be a great help. Small and or lite bikes would not profit from it. my $0.02

i think abs would be more suited for the larger bikes then smaller ones...and when i say larger im talking about bikes that are 700 lbs +
If you learn to master your brake control on your bike,you wont need A.B.S. to control your braking for you.
I think it's a necessity. Gives me so much more confident in unfavorable and emergency situations
I think it's worth the few inconveniences for that 1 time that it could save you in the rain.
Doesn't replace skill and practice....but nice to have as a last line of defence...
