    The formation you asked about is a "scrum." It's a way play is restarted. It became the line of scrimmage in American Football.

    • @Insidious191
      @Insidious191 Год назад +2

      The Game always starts with a free kick from the half way line. A Scrum is a result of penalties, a team can take a penalty kick for the side to gain yards, penalty kick at the posts for 3 points Or take a Scrum and run the ball through. They can also Tap the ball which I’ll explain in a moment. During active play or a tackle a Mall/Ruck can form that has similar rules that apply than that of a Scrum. It’s usually formed over a lose ball, tackle or directly after a line out. For the exception of a penalty line kick, Kicking the ball directly out of field would result in a line out to be taken back where the ball was kicked from. Catching a kicked ball directly from the air in your own 22m quarter will pause play after Calling the catch and raising your hand. This will give your team time to retreat and regroup before you’d kick or Tap the ball on your foot to restart play.

      yep its 8 guys per side that basically do tug of war but they push instead of pull. The idea is the team with the strangest scrum will push the other team back or off the ball. If the other team being pushed off the ball collapse then its a penalty to the other team for collapsing the scrum. Cmon Bokke, proud Springbok supporter from Durban.

    South Africa is definitely the most feared team because of the just plain physicality the Boks bring to the game. Like, the Boks are very often very unnecessarily physical and brutal while playing, and that's just because we South Africans as a whole just revel in fun bastardry and physicality of Rugby. A good way to find out more is to watch a Squidge Rugby Video on how the Boks won the 2019 world cup

      No question the Boks command huge respect for being the most physical team in world rugby. But out of the 103 Tests between the All Blacks and the Boks, New Zealand has won 61 Tests, and South Africa 38, with four drawn. The All Blacks have scored 234 tries and the Springboks 160. The only area of point scoring where the South Africans have the advantage is in dropped goals, with 30 to 2. In fact, the All Blacks are considered the most successful international sports team of any sporting code in the world. Fear the Boks for their physicality, but fear the All Blacks for their winning legacy.

    I would say of the 3 worldcup wins 1995 was special as it was the first one we could play after apartheid was abolished and it really united the country at a tense time. The 2007 squad were absolute beasts and they were definitely one of the favourites. The 2019 squad went through a serious rebuild phase and most people wrote them off, especially in the final, but they smashed England. As far as teams. The New Zealand All blacks of the professional era are definitely the team you want to beat, especially South Africa. England and France are always up there and have made finals. Wales and Ireland have been close but just cant get to the finals of a World Cup (Ireland are on fire this year and massive favourites along with France). Argentina is always a threat but that haven't been able to pull into the final yet. The Pacific islanders(Samoa, Fiji, Tonga) are more known for there seven's abilities but they are big units usually causing an injury or two when you draw them. Recently Japan has become a giant slayer, kicking off their impressive form by beating South Africa in the group stages of the 2015 World Cup and making it to the quarter finals of their home worldcup in 2019, this time being knocked out by South Africa. Best way to get to grips with the laws is by watching the games. The rules are modified slightly from time to time so watching old games might confuse you. Also try and watch European, South African or Australasian games, the American league is watchable, but the commentary can be confusing as they love throwing football lingo into it

    Little brief description of rugby for those who dont know.
    The goal of rugby is get over the try-line where you have to physically place the ball on the ground which is then followed up by a place kick (conversion), like your American Football. The other way to get points is if the opponent violates any rules that warrant a 'penalty', where we can go for another 'place kick' (or a scrum or lineout kick) which awards 3 points as opposed to a try which is 5, followed up the conversion attempt, awarding 2 points. Tries and conversion go hand in hand but you can miss the latter, only resulting in a 5 point gain, awarded from a try and not a total of 7.
    Basic Info:
    1. Pass the ball straight or backwards - forward is well forward and not allowed.
    2. Can kick the ball from hand to gain yards into enemy territory which is a gamble as you will either lose possession or reclaim it from the kick - this is used when you cant get through a defensive line or their line and or fullback as pushed up leaving space for a kick and run to retake and make ground.
    3. That thing of the players being bent down, bound together, is a 'scrum', awarded from foul play, it gives the attackers a chance to execute a set piece or move, very much like in American Football, its like your hucks, just not for every single play as only arises from foul play. The opponents can however overpower the attackers scrum and push them backwards to gain the ball back using their feet. A scrum is used to open the playing field up as less players are roaming or to gain yards close to the try-line or to result in a penalty from applying too much pressure in the initial hit, causing the opponents to collapse the scrum for example which is not allowed.
    4. When players are tackled, the ball carrier needs to release the ball back into play once on the ground (why you see many of them stretch their arms out to place the ball back on their side to be picked up), and this is where the opponents pile in as they are going to try rip the ball out of your hands (theres more to it but thats the basic principle), which will result in you either giving it away or holding onto it (which is a penalty as you must not stop the ball from being played in essence), this is why the teammates pile in once someone is tackled to 'clear' and prevent the opponents from getting over the ball and causing a penalty. Teammates clearing these 'rucks' also allows the ball to become readily available for faster movement and plays.
    5. When the ball is kicked out (there are other things like where the kick took place, did it bounce beforehand but thats for another time), this is a 'line-out' where more set moves are executed, like your hucks, so players try move around the line-out to confuse the opponents as the thrower is throwing for a pre-determined distance and height depending on what 'move' they are doing and this is why the opponents try mimic their movement so they can get their jumpers at the same location in the line so they can jump with the attackers to try contest the throw.
    6. Player jersey numbers from 1-8 are the 'forwards', these are usually the bigger guys that participate in scrums, ruck clearing, lineouts and general defensive-line bruising, think of them are your 'Guards' in football. Then the numbers 9-15 are the 'backs', think of these are your 'Receivers'.
    7. One last way to get points, is by going for drop goals which awards 3 points. This is where you can drop the ball and upon the bounce, follow with a kick and must go in-between the up rights. Perfect example of this for me anyways, would be the retired English legend Jonny Wilkinson.
    I think that's the general idea of rugby without diving into the specifics of each areas and the rules.
    LETS GO BOKKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE #RWC23

    5:16 that is a scrum. It's a method of restarting play with a set piece after a penalty is awarded due to the opposing team "knocking on" or passing forward.
    5:36 rucks and mauls are used to keep the ball in your possession after play breaks down
    6:03 the only time a ball is can legally move in a forward direction is off the boot

  • @gscmail1245
    @gscmail1245 Год назад +1

    4:44 formation is called a scrum. Usually a result of a minor offence/penalty such as a 'knock on' which is like a fumble in NFL where if you let the ball fall forwards the play will stop and a scrum is awarded to the opposite team. A scrum can also be awarded if a team passes the ball forwards as only backwards passes are allowed. There are a few other incidences where scrums are rewarded but those two examples are the most common. The scrum is a power battle over the ball fought by the forward players, numbers 1 through 8, and is usually in favor of whoever received the scrum as they get to feed the ball into the mouth of the scrum, but the opposing team can steal win the ball via brute force and pushing the other team back either pushing them over the ball and winning it or by causing the opposing team to collapse which will result in a penalty in favor of the stronger team.

    SPRINGBOKS are always up there. They are regarded as the hardest team to play maybe not the most feared because if you play rugby and fear the other team you are dead meat and to the Springboks it might as well be blood in the water. The BOKS as they are known are the only team alongside the New Zealand All Blacks who have three world cup tittles each. The easiest would be to google the world cup results since its inception as both the ALL BLACK and BOKS are always in the top three. BOKS won in 1995 (watch Clint Eastwood's movie INVICTUS where Morgan Freedman played Nelson Mandela) about South Africa winning the WC in 1995 the first time they were allowed into the competition as they were banned before due to the governments segregation laws (APARTHEID) so they never played in 1987 and 1991. These dudes are arch rivals with the ALL BLACKS and some of the best games ever have been played by these two teams. The 1995 team had impact as the competition was played in South Africa and it was the first time they were competing however due to not playing against top class world teams it was difficult for the BOKS to get it together plus the country was on a knife edge with most white people expecting a civil war now that power had been handed over to the ANC party (all black people with a little scattering of white dudes) so using the rugby world cup as a means to unite the country was put in place By Pres Mandela. They were given no chance at all even their local pundits shot their ability to pieces. PLEASE DUDE WATCH THE INVICTUS MOVIE IT DOES A GOOD JOB OF EXPLAINING.

    When tackled, you get one "rugby move" before you have to release the ball. That move can be to throw it, reach forward for a try, or most often to roll back and point the ball to your team so they can set up a ruck (defending possession) while the 9 sets up the next phase of play (that's when the guy picks up the ball from the pile and typically chucks it laterally to another runner, typically a 10). I very loosely think of the 9 and 10 as a wildcat play in football. 9 takes direct snap, then either runs it himself or passes on to the quarterback 10 who decides to run or commence with a play or pass it along to his next receiver/runner. You won't see the 9 run it too often ideally because as soon as they get the play off, they need to cycle to the next ruck to set up for the next play. If they get caught up or tackled, the team has to adjust to the loss of the skilled player during the next play and usually play conservative until they can get up and rejoin the action. 10 will often run, but typically it's to turn the defenders' heads and keep them honest so play further out can develop. Or if the defense is playing loose on the ruck, a 10 can squeak through a hole and break loose. Another formation occurred after the scrum portion of the video at 5:27 called a maul. This typically forms after a line out or can form on a ball carrier. I'm not as familiar with the rules here, but it's something like if the player with the ball is latched onto by a defender and another offensive player latches onto the ball carrier preventing the tackle, that forms a maul which can be used to drive the ball forward and prevents defenders from coming around the side and reaching in for the ball. There's more to it, but I mostly stop listening there and focus on driving the ball. It's a fun sport, and a good sir will sort you out on the rules if you're still learning.

    The most feared team in the world is the team everyone wants to beat year in and year out, and the benchmark of all rugby teams; The All Blacks. No matter what others may say, no International rugby team has a record anywhere near the All Blacks for consistency and success. The 1995 Springboks were an awesome team but the Boks bring out awesome teams every year. The All Blacks vs Springbok games are the equivalent of USA vs Canada in Ice Hockey. If I was to choose a winner of Rugby World Cup 2023, I would put the Boks slightly ahead of the AB's. They know when to time their run so they peak at RWC and when the Boks are at peak, only the All Blacks have a chance of bringing them down. At any Rugby World Cup, the Boks would be the most feared team.

      @@forevalearning Of course but you have to remember that Rugby is New Zealand’s number 1 sport where as Rugby in Ireland is our 4th most popular sport. The All Blacks dominated world rugby for so many years but all good things must come to an end and now you are seeing the start of a decline over there. And teams like Ireland, France & England have simply just caught up with the Southern Hemisphere teams. Ireland have a very strong system now in the IRFU. Each of our 4 provinces have extremely well run Academies & pathways and now their is much stronger strength in depth in players. This hasn’t just come who it recently. We’ve been striving for this for the past 20/30 years and failed a lot of times but we now beat the Southern Hemisphere teams regularly. I’m definitely not underestimating the All Blacks or South Africa or even Australia because they are great teams but you are now seeing Ireland as serious serious competitors and we aren’t afraid of any team now. We have world class players in almost every single position and our bench is extremely strong. The players have so much belief in themselves and you can see it in interviews. They also back it up on the pitch. There’s more things to come from Irish rugby I guarantee it. Rugby is going through a complete revolution here in Ireland and everybody is excited to see it happen. They are the top team in world rugby at the moment and the team to beat. Scary thing is they haven’t even peaked yet!

Northern Hemisphere have definately caught up with Southern Hemisphere sides, apart from England lol. Andy Farrell is such a good coach too. I still believe it was him who master-minded the drawn Lions series a few years back against the ABs, not Gatland. ABs will be on a rebuild soon as current players move on or retire at the end of the RWC. This is without a doubt Irelands best chance ever to win the RWC and there is no reason to think they can't.

    This video is centered on the current team, most clips coming from the 2022 season. There's a bit of conflict when discussing the best springbok team of all time... the '95 team was great, and they had their fair share of obstacles. But it comes down to the 2007-2009 team, or the 2019 team which is pretty much unchanged to date, barring a few new entries and also dealing with player injury. It's a world cup year this year, and if the boks can win it again then the 2019 era team will go down as the best team in history, although the argument could be made that that honor belongs to the 2011-2015 New Zealnand team. As it stands, I personally rate the 2007 springbok team ever so slightly higher than the current team, for various reasons that other fans may disagree with. But, as Naas would say, at the end of the day, I love my boks
