I was attempting to learn how to finger pick “Nothin”. An hour and a half later, I’m laying on the couch 12 songs deep into this private show for like the 100th time in the last few years.
I dont think it gets easier to deal with . I was born with the fever and have owned, bought and sold a hundred guitars in my life . When the fever comes on me I go for days or weeks trying to learn songs with minimal success . Still have a Martin and Gibson but the fever has subsided more and more lately ..I only pick one up when I want to play along with songs like this as best I can ,,,God Bless
Townes singing this song in his waning years, with a faltering voice . . . even missing a few notes . . . just makes this incredible song that much more poignant . . . it tears my heart in two as well . . . this man was a master . . . his album "Flyin' Shoes" is one of the greatest albums ever created from any genre . . . I would have paid a $1,000 to have been in that room with him when he sang this song . . . even more . . .
I just found Townes a few weeks ago. I'm down $150, but I've got 10 great albums to live with forever. I'd had just presumed that Tom Waits was the greatest song writer of the late 20th century. TVZ is making up ground for this position, fast.
@aritherock I agree. And I think its what he doesn't say that makes it so relatable. He's not detailing the character, talking about the color of her hair or some such thing... he's singing about situations.
@willong1000 If you haven't already purchased the album Flyin' Shoes . . . do it now . . . it is as perfect an album as was ever created . . . also get A Gentle Evening With Townes Van Zandt . . . brilliant live performances . . . These live clips are perfect . . . I would have paid $10,000 to have been there if I had it . . .
Townes is so freakin unpretentious. It was one of his charms.
It's almost like he just cranked out beautiful songs as a matter of fact.
I think "unpretentious" is exactly the word to describe him. Good one!

How does this not have more views?! One of my favorite Townes' songs.

I'm not even kidding, I'd give a limb. Without a moment's hesitation.
What a gem of a concert. Thanks for putting it all together on a playlist. I've been watching this for well over a decade now. Great stuff.
I read, that an interviewer asked him, why he wrote such sad songs? His response was, "they aren't sad - they're hopeless".
Nobody sings it with the emotion of Townes....nobody.
Townes is a fuckin genius. He just nails it, every time!!
This always rips my heart in two.
My FAVORITE TVZ song
EVER!
I've never heard of this guy. Gillian Welch, Rawlings and Norah Jones covered one of his songs that I saw (Loretta). Unbelievably beautiful music.
Thanks for posting this performance....this will inspire me for years on end. Amazing

Thank you for posting this, lapislazuli42.
Fantastic...thanks for posting. My favourite version is Steve Earle's on 'Train a comin'...really brings tears to my eyes.
He's still strong in the rotation. Don't see that changing.
