If you're a Townes fan you may have already heard this, but in an interview once he was asked "Why are your songs so sad?" ... to which he replied: "They're not sad. They're hopeless." (my recollection, actual quote may be slightly different).
i cant help but push back tears every time he sings "sunshine walked beside her" for the second time. it goes to show that sometimes terrible things happen to the brightest people in this world.
No words!! Fuking blows me away!! I'm just going to throw my guitar and all these papers in the river!! Say what you will gentlemen and ladies..but in my opinion ..this is one of the finest writers of songs..that I can think of ...right up there!! I gotta go start a fire
I first heard this song when Nanci Griffith covered it, and later Steve Earle. Seeing Van Zandt's name as the writer of other songs I'd heard lead me to check out his stuff, and ever since he's been my favourite songwriter. There's a purity of sadness, and honesty without self pity that never gets old, and that nobody has matched. I regret I'm too young to have seen him in concert, but every video, recording or cover version is a blessing.
Listened to lots of Townes songs one of the greatest lyricists and writers ever for those that don’t now about him and there are many I pity you. This word gets banded about a lot but in his case it’s true LEGEND!
Townes is up there with Jerry Garcia for having aged so terribly... drugs cause them to look decades older then they actually were...it really is heartbreaking...
This man was afflicted by being human. As are we all. He simply knew it.
Sentience is a bitch.

Easily, one of the best songs ever written
Yea
He wrote like 50 songs that are amongst the greatest songs ever written.

Glad someone recorded this. What a masterpiece, and to have him sit down and play this just like he's sitting in your living room.

true but you should keep at it too. Townes probably felt the same as you at one point. I'm a songwriter too and keep searching for the gold
I'll never argue.
Well it's hard to stack up to the master..... You keep writing your songs and working on em... I'm sure your friends and family appreciate them.?-
Just wonderful! Thank you

One of the best story writers in the history of country folk music..I am surprised this man never won anything for his writing.
Me also, there will never be another Townes
Y'all don't even know what a f'n performance that man gave to us that day
Hey friend I'd like to think we certainly have & thats why we good hearted souls are watching it now...
I’ve never sung this one in its entirety without my voice struggling not to break from wanting to cry. «The sunshine walked beside her»…
Simply the best. His songs wrap around your heart and leave a permanent imprint.
No I'm not crying, I was just cutting onions earlier.
Devastating. Every single time.
So good - should be a household name. Blows modern crap to dust.
Untouchable

I wish i had experienced him live!😢
often he was to drunk or shot up to perform
This is the most heartbreaking song of all time. And this performance is equally beautiful and heartbreaking.
Most recently covered by Charley Crockett. Simply and beautifully done.
This man can make me cry.so sincere.
In hasn't been said so I will say so : this comes from A bootleg at the Holiday Inn.. When recorded by his current manager at the time
Yupp. In his room, at 3 in the morning.
You wana pick a scab and dig into it listen to Townes
Nanci brought me here. Glad I came.
Sweet & authentic. RIP Townes!
Makes me cry.
He aged. Always thought he died young. His music is my theme song.
He died on 1.1.1997 aged 52 says Wikipedia ...
Townes is up there with Jerry Garcia for having aged so terribly... drugs cause them to look decades older then they actually were...it really is heartbreaking...
Yeah Garcia was unreal for looking about 80 at 45. May get away with it when young but it sure does catch up fast.
what a talent
