  • Time lapse footage of the Thames Barrier's annual closure, 6 Oct 2013.
The Thames Barrier is London's main defence against flooding in the event of a tidal surge. (Around 1m people, more than 10% of the population, live directly on the Thames flood plain). It was completed in 1982 since when it's closed over 120 times to prevent floods.
Although the barrier is closed monthly for maintenance, a full tidal check only happens twice a year in the spring and the autumn.

Very nice time lapse and certainly a nice day for shooting this, as well. I've read about the Thames Barrier a number of times over the years but never saw it in action until now. Thanks for sharing this - Nice work!

if not then the thames barrier is a waste of time, the banks on the lower side of the barrier should be as high as the gates go up

Yes they have where there is property or where the land is parks/marshland that is allowed to flood without causing harm.

How long does it take to close in real time?

it can be closed in as little as 8 minutes in an emergency but for routine closures, it takes around 2hrs - It's much kinder to the river to close the barrier slowly.

Well, each of the main span gates are about 20m tall - obviously that doesn't translate into 20m of flood protection as quite a bit of that sits submerged at the bottom of the Thames, but it's pretty big - more than capable of dealing with tidal flooding - you saw in the video how about half of the barrier was above the water line when it was in its raised position.
Tsunami aren't really a consideration for the Thames Barrier - London doesn't sit in an "at risk" area as it's not in or near an earthquake zone. Important to note as well that there are very few, if any, coastal/tidal defence schemes in the world that would not get overwhelmed by a tsunami.
