  • As tv soap operas go, they don't come any bigger than 'Dallas' (1978). What started as a five-part miniseries ran for 13 more seasons as a weekly continuing drama. Producer Leonard Katzman was around for most all of it, and came up with spectacular cliffhangers that generated tremendous word-of-mouth. 'Who Shot JR?' was probably the biggest cliffhanger to hit American television; Bobby in the shower wasn't too shabby either. The show's cast included stars of the past and present, and created a few new ones along the way. The powerful theme, by Jerrold Immel, is one of tv's best and has appeared on numerous lists of 'greatest tv themes'. We have a sampling of 'Dallas' themes through the years:
0:00 Opening titles, season one. The original miniseries is now counted as the first season.
    1:11 End credits, season one.
    1:54 Opening titles, season four.
3:07 Opening titles, season nine. This is the 'dream' season. Patrick Duffy does not appear in the title sequence.
4:23 Opening titles, season 14. The final season; the theme music is heard in stereo, a practice that began in season 12.
5:51 End credits and logo, season 14.
6:43 BONUS: Opening titles, season three, from the 2012 revival series that aired on TNT. This show picked up the storyline 20 years after the end of season 14. The death of Larry Hagman caused his JR Ewing character to be killed off. Interest in the show declined and it ended after three seasons.
Corrected: Alert RUclipsrs ‪@tmanokc‬ and @30nash30 noticed I used the wrong video in the 'season one' slot. Got it right this time.

As someone who loves TV themes, not only do I adore this opening, I still think of _Dallas_ as a frickin' masterclass in expertly cramming an entire 70-second theme into a single 45-second closing credits sequence. Brilliant.

Dallas....dukes of hazzard...Hogan heroes...gilligan..twilight zone. And that's it for truly great tv opening theme songs.

I could listen to this song all day. They nailed that big country, conquer the new west, and a hint of big city 80s disco. This song has i t all, and that bridge by the drummer starting at -6:48, that off beat cymbal was on point. Everything connected...composition was perfect

Brilliant theme. Even during it's 13th and final season, it was still compelling to listen to.

I’m so glad to see this uploaded. I used to love “Dallas” so much I could tell you what season and episode was from just by hearing the theme song! I still think the early years have one of the best opening sequences in TV history.

Interestingly the French dubbed version features an entirely different theme with lyrics. Apparently for the French, the original theme wasn't brash enough!

THE CELTICS SHOULD START WATCHING THE CLASSIC SHOW: DALLAS. They will have no problem beating THE MAVERICKS WHEN THEY COME TO TOWN. IT’S COMING TO ENEMY TERRITORY THAT WOULD BE A BIG CHALLENGE. Kenneth Huang. 5/29/24.

Well, the producers felt the main titles needed a facelift, so Cliff Fenneman, one of the show's producers, designed a new opening that still gave viewers a glimpse of all things Dallas - the skyline, oil, Cowboys stadium, and yes, Southfork.

But one thing I liked about the season 13 and 14 intro, is as the trumpets kicked in and full orchestration commenced for the theme music, a fiery explosion erupted at 4:43.
