I’m so happy to see that your daughter asked the stranger to not touch. I’ve watched many Black travelers endure the touching to not appear disagreeable. I think it goes both ways and others need to know the differences as well.

The time your spending with your children to educate them is something special. This is what all children need. Comunication, patients.respect.morals.goals, integrity, self esteem, independence, discipline. Teaching children to be leaders not followers. Education is needed not only for the children but also with the adults. I'm so glad they still have libraries around. What a great mom, have a happy, happy mother's day.❤🌹🌻🌷

WELL TODAY’S SOCIETY IS DIFFERENT WITH THE INCREASE OF TECHNOLOGY CHILDREN NOW A DAYS ARE GETTING THEIR FOCUSED AND ATTENTION TO SOMETHING ELSE: CELLULAR PHONES . THEY SPEND ALMOST ALL DAY DEALING WITH THE CELLS WAISTING THEIR TIME PLAYING GAMES . SO IN RETROSPECT THEY DON’ T WANT TO WORK MUCH LESS THEY DON’T WANT TO ADVANCE THEIR EDUCATION. YOU WILL NOT SEE CHILDREN TRYING TO LEARN ANOTHER LANGUAGE OR OTHER CULTURES. SO I GET REAL EXCITED WHENEVER I SEE CHILDREN LEARNING OTHER LANGUAGES. IT’S IMPRESSIVE.

I’m biracial! Korean and Black! My mother is Korean. My mothers family did not accept us! Anytime we’d go back to Korea to see her family it was super uncomfortable! Strangers would walk up to us touching us, rubbing our faces or hair! My mother would pop their hand lol… I don’t have as much as my mother looks as much as my siblings so they were always so interested in me the most because I have more of my father features! So I totally get how you protect yourself and kids! I’m 29 now haven’t been back there in awhile !

I reckon its the same with her sisters family. The Korean husbands mom acts weird around the children. The entire culture is very cute but when you peel back the layers that level of EQ and human acceptance isn’t very high. Its a homogenous society, while us USA/Carribbean blacks are already multigenerationally mixed so we don’t care so much. Just do you and have fun when you do go!

We were the darkest there and some would outright refuse to take pictures or not even put an arm on the shoulder for a “ family “ photo. This is so great for your kids to see and experience at a young age. It's exciting to see you and the kids enjoying another culture :) and of course learning how to set polite boundaries :) I wanted to comment that after living for six years in Beijing, China with my black daughters, the reactions and interactions were very similar to the Koreans. There was a lot of curiosity and politeness around taking pictures. They rarely asked to touch the kid's hair and the kids freaked when they did so I would tell them politely not to touch the girls. Public tourist places were the worst because people from all over the world were there it was busy and crowded and the girls would get mobbed, so I didn't take them that often to tourist attractions like the Great Wall or Tiananmen Square which you really only need to see once. :) Eventually, the elders in the town where we lived would protect the children and would tell people in Mandarin not to take pictures or would scold them if they tried. The community really protected the girls as did their Chinese teachers :) and their friends :)

I totally agree with you. People have their own boundaries and must understand others have boundaries too. There should not be a precedent set or an expectation established that black women are one ( in opinion) in agreement and it is expected of them you can walk up to them and touch them.. I am not sure but I do not think it is okay to walk up to Koreans and start touching them. One of the reasons this has not been addressed is because so many people make excuses for it..."they dont mean any harm"...that might be true..but if we make excuses for people they will not understand that black people are not a monolithic thinking people...not everyone is okay with that. It ridiculous that people would conclude this is our culture and its okay to touch us. This has nothing to do with black cultural norms...nothing to do with culture This has to do with the individual. BLACK PEOPLE PLEASE STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR THIS TREND. WE ARE THE ONES TRAINING OTHERS THAT WE ALL THINK ALIKE. THEY WOULD NOT DO THIS IF WE SPOKE UP...BECAUSE THE TRUTH IS..they are very nice in Korea...but they are straight shooters..so if you sign up to be treated like a pet how is that their fault.

As a child,I HATED when family friends and acquaintances - or distant relatives- pinched my cheeks and did the usual things adults did with children back then. Or asked "What's your name? How old are you? What grade are you in? Whom do you love best, mom or dad?" (that was a thing back then. Thankfully people don't ask this last question anymore). I wanted to react unpleasantly, instead I tried to endure politely. But I told my mom to help me avoid this and she did. And, mark you, they weren't complete strangers on the street. Children are not objects, they might not be comfortable with everyone touching them and fondling them. Yuck! A bit of respect. People are more respectful to dogs - because they know they might bite, when children don't.

I never let people touch my daughter's hair. I also do not allow photos. In China, I have made people delete photos. As a parent, I have always strived to create a safe and comfortable environment for my daughter, who has grown up experiencing diverse cultures across Europe, Asia, and Africa.
One aspect that has been particularly important to me is the personal space and respect for my daughter's autonomy, especially when it comes to her appearance. I have consistently taught her the importance of boundaries and have encouraged her to express her feelings openly. It saddens me to recount an incident that took place in Germany when she was in 5th class. (She is now an engineering and math student at an HBCU. )
While my daughter in the train, a white Slovic woman touched her hair. The experience was distressing for my daughter, as she has grown up with a strong preference for maintaining her personal space and has never been comfortable with others touching her hair. This experience left her feeling upset and vulnerable, and she expressed her emotions to me when we were reunited at the station.
It was painful for her. The significance of acknowledging personal boundaries and respecting each individual's comfort zone. My daughter's heritage is a blend of Afro-Scandinavian and American, and she was born in Germany. This unique mix of cultures and experiences has contributed to her sense of self, and we have always encouraged her to embrace her identity in a way that feels right to her. We have lived in Japan and all over Europe. We are now on our way to Korea. She is completely fluent in several languages and started to read at 2-years old in 2 of them.

    • @shawnbuchanan01

@Fusemoree ,I am well aware of the meaning of the term 'heritage'. As an archaeologist with a minor in ethnology, I understand that heritage is not a term that signifies a geographical designation. In this context, it refers to individuals of the African diaspora who were born outside of Africa and have been living outside the continent in some cases for several generations. Terms like 'African European' and 'Blasian' are cultural descriptors that encompass both heritage and geography. It's crucial to note that ethnicity and nationality are distinct concepts, with the former relating to heritage and cultural identity, while the latter pertains to a person's belonging to a specific nation/country/area

I went to China in 2017 and everyone wanted to take my picture, have their children take pics with me, the whole family take pics with me. First couple of times I was ok with it. I then I politely said no. I was done with it. I wore a hat put things in front of my face when they tried to secretly take my pic. Wow!!!!! What an experience.

You are an awesome and amazing mother. My children went through an immersion program in the states; from pre kindergarten through 8th grade . I have 3 children, and 2 are fluent in Spanish, and 1 understands it but is not comfortable speaking. I wish I could've done what you're doing. Great job!
