    I find it quite funny so many comments saying things like "Oh! They're British!" or "They have British accents!" Have none of our American Cousins heard of the West End? Or did you think we borrow Broadway stars all year round? Also, extra shock value for some of you, Rachel Tucker is Irish. She used to put on an English accent for the show, as some boring people who don't get out much in London would not be able to cope with anything else. Sadly stars originating from Ireland, Scotland and Wales generally have to put on the "Newsreader" accent. Considering the diverse population in London, you think we would make more effort to understand accents of those in the United Kingdom.

    • @nkwari
      @nkwari 8 лет назад

      +Sam Walker The only British people they put on the news in the United States are the Royal Family. That seems to be the end of our exposure to the UK. Also Adele if she is releasing an album.

      Rachel and Louise are wonderful!
      I saw Rachel in Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre on the 6th May 2016, she blew me away with her performance together with the other amazing casts!

    • @unidan82
      @unidan82  8 лет назад +7

      It's nothing to do with understanding the accent as she was allowed to use her own accent in we will rock you. It's a character who is written that way and its up to the artistic director. - like how the wizard has a southern American accent. Idina only used her American accent because she couldn't carry off an English accent. Rachel is tremendously talented and can convincingly be English, southern Irish, cockney and America and I'm sure more besides

    • @selina5598

      I prefer hearing different accents for both Glinda and Elphaba because they are from different places anyway. For example, I've always seen a Scottish Boq so for me, he just has that accent. I think the 'posh' accent works well for buttoned up Elphaba but also I'd love to hear a Northern accent on her as well to contrast with a 'posh English' or American Glinda

    • @elphbwckd212
      @elphbwckd212 6 лет назад +3

      She sounds younger then Helen dallimore. She sounded like Mrs. Potts old. Lol I've noticed a lot of the West end glindas have and older sounding voice. Maybe that's what they look for when they cast the role because it is more proper and high class sounding? Idk but it doesn't work for me. I love a lot of the West end elphabas but I have yet to see a Glinda that really impresses me.

    When I read comments like: "This HIGHLY offends me" or "Those accents ruined it" or similar tripe, I really, REALLY have to bleed for humanity. But then that's a sign of the times I suppose. We live in the age of the "great offence takers" don't we?
    Want real issues? Leave your comfortable lives in the west and come and see the rest of the world.
    Diversity is to be celebrated, or are we all supposed to be morphing into a single-cell amoeba now?

  • @unidan82
    @unidan82  12 лет назад +13

    let me guess you're American?
    Also I'm guessing you're going by the CD soundtrack?
    First of all, it's in an English Accent because it is on in England.
    Secondly, the producer of Wicked Worldwide has stated that he always wanted G(a)linda to have an English accent and has been very positive about Louise's portrayal.
    Lastly, to compare a LIVE vocal to someone's STUDIO vocal is just ridiculous, Idina was never very good live and there are very few audios where she sounds good live.

      Selina Moses I think that they should all have different accents. It shows that they come from all over, the characters I mean. Although, I do think this Glinda was trying too hard, and her voice was just kind of unbearable. Lol. It was even worse than Kristin Chenoweth. And by worse, I mean peppy and high pitched!☺️❤️♥️

    Despite the fact that British accents are absolutely gorgeous, I do tend to think that doing Wicked with British accents is a bit like doing Sweeney Todd or Oliver! with American accents. It just doesn't quite fit. The Wizard of Oz as a work is pure Americana, despite the fact that it doesn't necessarily take place in the United States. Unidan82 has a solid point though. The accent bothers me less with Glindas than it does with Elphabas.

    This Galinda lacks the cunning and charm of Chenoweth's. The character should know the irony of this song.

    • @unidan82
      @unidan82  4 года назад +2

      I think it works on this level that it’s kind of endearing that she doesn’t quite get the irony and ridiculousness of it. It’s only later that she grows up and really thinks about things. If galinda was sensible and all knowing that would mean she knew what she was doing when bullying elphaba. I think the whole point of the character is that she’s thoughtless and vapid at first but through friendship and struggle she learns the error of her ways.

    • @waynesimpson4081
      @waynesimpson4081 4 года назад

      'It's not about attitude, It's the way you're viewed, So it's very shrewd to be, Very, very popular'. This isn't a vapid character but one who views popularity as power or a weapon. Her epiphany is in the damage that can result from using it.
