Panasonics beliefs and values are the whole reason I chose Lumix over Sony. While yes their continuous autofocus wasn’t great in video, photos was fine except for sports which I don’t shoot, their cameras just work and built extremely well. I was trained in Cinema filmmaking so I’ve always manually focused anyway. The issue has arisen recently for me though as I have been doing more gimbal work where I can’t manually focus so autofocus has become more important so this new S5i has come at a perfect time for me!
When I was deciding I was tossing up the GH5 and the A6500 (the A7iii didn’t exist yet) and the fact the a6500 and all other sony cameras at the time had the tendency to overheat while no one seemingly could get the GH5 to overheat was the core reason in the end.
To me a tool that will irregularly overheat, meaning you can’t predict how much time you have using it, is useless and I could not justify buying a tool that is useless.
That philosophy Lumix has carry’s over into everything they do. They build them all with amazing stabilisation, always good touch displays, even their cheap Gx9 has a better back screen than the A7iii, their lenses are usually breathing compensated, IN THE LENS, not dealt with in software. They roll out powerful updates regularly and push cameras to be even better years down the line.
All these things shout to me a company that cares about their cameras and their consumers. And now they have PDAF, they have become easily one of the biggest camera manufacturers to keep an eye on. I hope they’re successful because we need Lumix to push innovation in the industry!

**UPDATE - THIS IS A BSI SENSOR, IDK WHAT I WAS THINKING LOL. MY BAD! Also, for you guys saying I tested some parts of the AF wrong, I MIGHT HAVE! I am not perfect lol. What I can tell you, is this is a good af system, HOWEVER, I still find Sony/Canon BETTER. I loved that Panasonic is committed to continuing to try to improve the AF and the stabilization (wobble). My biggest gripe with the AF is EVEN IF I DID GOOF WITH THE TEST, other brands eliminate the guesswork for autofocus (Sony a7iv just nails it). I don't want to need to whip out a manual to learn when and where I should use a specific af setting!**

I'm used to slog3 now and the latest color science is great as well. I like the panasonic ibis since gh5 but the a7iv can shoot stable enough for my needs and ik like to use gimballs. Appreciate the review man! Us S5 users knew that it was just a competent AF system away from being the best value camera on the market. They just put a lot of thought into videographers when it comes to ergonomics and features. And the great thing is it doesn't take away from the camera's photo capabilities as you mentioned. I'm looking forward to seeing how they build out the rest of their full-frame lineup. Their S1H and S1R/S1 successors could be really intriguing.

This may be Panasonic’s gateway camera, and a sign of what’s to come in the near future. If this is what the company is offering at $2000, what are they going to put in the LUMIX S1H2 or an S1R2? The day this camera was launched, I had so many conversations about it with other photographers, but none of us own a Panasonic S camera. The S5 MKII is really hard to beat at that price. Nice video like always. But 1 thing is missing from the price points. I used the s5 for a year. I loved that machine. Can't say a bad word except the focus. Than bought the a7 IV right after they opened pre-order for 1 big reason. Body price on Pana side beat everybody on the market but the lenses dude. If you want a good focus lens you can't get third-party lenses like Tamron, sigma ect. They dont have auto focus with Pana at all. We are talking around 1500-2500$ / glass against Sony 500-1500$ third-party glasses. To be honest for a lot of user don't need those Pro L- mount lenses or G series lenses. That's why I decided to go forward with Sony. In the future if I need a new body I already saved the money for the fx3 ect just from the lenses. And to be true those lenses are beasts.

  • @tonyzecchinelli

from what I understand from many tutorials about the Lumix S5 II - there may still be a very serious defect that not many people talk about or consider, and it is that the wheel at the top right, which is used to change exposure times, well it is very easy to move it inadvertently with the palm of the hand, because I repeat it is a defect that is pre-existing on all Lumix cameras, because I repeat the time wheel is too close to the palm of the hand, and it is too sensitive to move and that inadvertently changes the exposure times and you realize it only after you've taken the photo. I believe that this wheel should have a manual analog fixing so to unlock or lock the exposure times you have to voluntarily intervene more forcefully on the wheel that changes them. and another defect that no one talks about is that even if we have the manual and external wheel to change from AFS to AFC, however, we still have to go inside the menu to make it truly active and so what is the point of having these two settings to get the result of to have a fast speed to switch from AFS to AFC when it would be more than enough to have only the external wheel that quickly lets us switch from AFS to AFC. Since I translated everything I wrote with the Google translator well I hope RUclips does not consider it Spam and does show my comment - I'm Italian and even if I speak good English, but the google translator helps me a lot but when you copy and paste from the google translator and post a comment in a RUclips video well RUclips doesn't show it and this is Such a pity. You need to add wide and telephoto lenses, professional flash, good memory card, bluetooth remote, smallrig cage, bag. (I still need a small travel gimbal). The entire set is what give you the quality photo and video. Camera tech will always improve each year. It gives you great picture and movie it is reliable and does not overheat and have great autofocus. . It is compact and with a cage allow multiple add on with the same weight total than a bigger a7rv or a1 but far less expensive.. Photo are great, HLG movie are great, color science is very good. Stabilization is good for photo and static video. Gyro stabilization is good. For more motion video by increasing the shutter soeed. Adding a small travel gimbal and the kit would be perfect. natural with flash photo are great. The grip is shallow? No problem add a smallrig 3212 cage brings you great handle and you can add many more handles. Also the added weight total helps in the stabilization of videos. It helps a lot. Adding weight is key to get more stable footage. You must forget the specs at one point and just enjoy what you have. The key is buying some quality component that are very good, reliable.

Welcome to the dark side 😈😈, we been waiting. I love when people new to panny realize all of the little things that make us love it so much. The intuitive button layout, menu systems, ergonomics, the sheer amount of features that are just crammed into even their entry level ones. They don't pull any punches in providing value and listening to their customers with firmware updates.
With the release of the S5, they went and buffed a TON of stuff on the S1 via firmware to make it a higher end camera in a lot of ways vs the s5 so they wouldn't alienate an entire part of their audience by making the S1 obsolete with the release of the cheaper, smaller S5. That's the kinda stuff we love them for.

Watching your footage on the AF, the times it failed you had moved the AF window to somewhere you wasn't in. If you see it even says on the screen to press the menu button to return. That would then re-enable the tracking modes which you say couldn't find you (because they had been overridden).

@@TerryWarfield No, it's no different to if you used touch focus on a Sony A7IV. The difference here is that on Lumix systems you don't need to press a tiny button to activate that, it will do it by tapping anywhere on the display and will then give you a box to move around.
If you come off of that, it goes back to the usual human tracking which would have then picked up your body/face.
The system works really well, it's just a different way to how Sony does it

The thing about Panasonic is that they will constantly provide updates to their cameras and even add features later on. I’ve been wanting a reason to leave micro four thirds and go to full frame with the L mount that way I can later buy a Leica SL2 and still be able to use the same lenses.
I guess it’s time to sell my Lumix G9 and lenses. $2k is insanely good for what you’re getting and I’m mainly a stills shooter so the new image engine that’s developed in collaboration with Leica looks super nice. Not exactly like they’re on my Leica M10 but they look so good! I love the look, it’s gives a unique enough look to the images to stand out from the Sony and canon images while still not trying to look like Leica images. I think Panasonic and Leica found a good middle ground in the image engine where Panasonic can benefit from Leica’s experience while still not endangering Leica’s potential sales if that makes sense. The images look great if not better than ever and really stand out but still don’t have the signature Leica look that I get in my Leica M10.
This was an overall very informative video and honestly I think I’m sold. It checks my criteria: Lumix L mount, Full Frame, Phase detect, lots of video features to use when I want them, reasonably priced, and lovely looking images! I’m very much sold, and look forward to using it. I’ll be putting up my micro four thirds kit up for sale soon and preorder from B&H or Adorama. Great video man and thanks for all the info!

It's worth considering that PDAF will likely come to GH6mk2 along with the improved algorithm for IS and possibly a stacked sensor making m43 mount a viable video contender imo. I'm also considering a switch from m43 to this, but I'm not terribly invested in lenses.

@@spaceghostcqc2137 you got high hopes, I admire that. But that won’t happen anytime soon. @@spaceghostcqc2137 the GH5 Mark IIs only significant upgrades were G9 levels of AF and IBIS. The G9 was released in very early 2018, it’s the one due for an upgrade before the video centric GH6. So you all will be waiting as a G9 successor is more likely to happen before a GH6 Mark II that’s not even a year old yet. It doesn’t matter to me though as I’m moving to an S5 II and will be selling 80% of my MFT kit. If I like the S5 II enough I’ll sell off everything else and go full frame. I technically already have full frame with my Leica M10 but it’s not a traditional mirrorless.

If Panasonic decide to the kit bundles they've had with the s5 for s5 mk2 (24-70 / 50mm) for a similar price as now then its going to be a problem for every company. These things will fly out the door. What will drive it is the press online. The vibe has been overwhelmingly positive for this camera. It seems to literally do everything in a very competent fashion for far less money than every other flag ships camera.
The only downside is lenses. But Kai Wong just showed it using the canon EF adapter and having great focus performance. So how big a deal is the lens situation? 2 grand with a 24-70 bundle and its game over I feel.

Others like Nikon had Phase Detect for a long time but time has proven that their algorithm were not class leading. Give me real info on how it actually compares with moving subjects in video and stills. How long before their first gen system grows up from a first generation to a fourth or fifth generation. Of course I'm a stills shooter so maybe I should just ignore it since they are focused on video. $2000 is great but is Panasonic really just trying to buy their way back into the market. Has anybody done an independent build cost analysis to determine its real cost to build?
