Everything "WRONG" With Fire & Ice Welcome To Smallville #1

- Опубликовано: 10 сен 2023
- Fire & Ice Welcome To Smallville #1, DC Comics once more dives into 80s nostalgia to bring some beloved members of the JLI (Justice League International) back into the foreground. Beatriz da Costa and Tora Olafsdotter are in Smallville at the behest of Superman to take some time and find themselves. How are they going to do that? Why by opening a hair salon. Hijinks ensure as Fire can't stand the lack of superhero action. The series promises romance ft Guy Gardner and Lobo, and others yet to be seen. The series is meant to be an ode to the Giffen, DeMatteis, Maguire era of Justice League stories so humour is paramount, but does it land? We discuss the highs and lows here on Casually Comics!

Would you get your hair done by Fire and Ice?
I want my hair done by them
If I *had* hair, sure.
Given that they are not trained or licensed to do so, no.
I feel like they would do neon dye really well lol
Sure.
I think a retrospective on Fire as a character would be cool given the amount of small changes she had across the eras the same style as u did metamorpho
Ice too! She used to be a goddess! People literally worshiped her! That she is as quiet and introverted as she is would be a great source of material.
Same. This book I was excited for and it literally forgot she’s a threat
+1 on a retrospective. Maybe add Ice as well (would be curious to hear about her dying and coming back)
Fire feels so jarring here for me. My first exposure to her was during JLU and I remember Fire being this really cool and confident character.
I kinda cringe seeing her like this as your talking about this new issue 😖
I totally agree with this evaluation. As Sasha was reading Fire's self-intro, I was thinking, "No, please, not like this!"
Must agree. I am a big fan of the JLI era. But this isn't the Fire I know. Where did the self confidence go? Remember her website with her nude pics, but of her as a green human torch? Fire is lovely and knows it, she's confident, sassy and has huge cred throughout the Latino world. I want the confident sassy fire. Ice is almost the same but feels off. Ice's relationship with Guy is... gone. And yeah, Eminem reference went straight over my head. Did I mention that I'm not a fan of the art style. It looks unfinished.
That's why having better writers that understand the characters they're writing is important.
@@davidchurch5932Ice’s relationship with Guy ended several years ago, so that aspect being missing isn’t a problem for me but I definitely feel you on the characterization issues. On the subject of relationships, I thought DC had finally made Fire and Ice officially a couple so I wish this book would do a lot more than that
@@Cdr2002 I mean guy and ice where mentioned a bit in the redlaturn guy and that weird one recentish where one of the writers clearly hadnt realized all the character development guy had gone threw and ice and threw both back to the internation days for a cheap 'you talking to my girl' gag
It’s kinda crazy how Fire feels the need to “prove herself” to the superhero community when her, Ice, and the rest of the early 90’s Justice League were on the frontlines when Doomsday came to town . That’s instant 1000% respect points right there !
I didn’t see anybody else risk receiving an ass whooping besides Superman (RIP) . Having this plot point for an established character just seems … lazy to someone not fully versed in Fire & Ice lore .
Yeah they all showed up …..and Doomsday sadly wiped the floor with all of them, it wasn’t much of a fight- but you have to give it to them they tried and definitely acted like heroes despite the odds being very much against them.
@@tribblemaster9304 I did refer to the ass whooping they all got as well . I was attempting-albeit crudely-to highlight the bravery, tenacity, and strength that Fire has already had and I used the biggest curb stomp of the 90s to do so . I stand by my point because-as you mentioned-I had to give it to them for acting like heroes despite the odds being stacked against . I think there’s even a panel of Guy Gardner calling out those who were belittling his time with the 90’s JL mentioning how his team stepped up against Doomsday when no one else did besides Superman (note: I have not been able to find it, otherwise I’d link it)
But, as I thought about it more, it could make sense for Fire to be stand-offish around Superman’s help if it is established that she still suffers from Doomsday PTSD/guilt that Superman had to sacrifice himself because her and the JL couldn’t hack it . An anger that builds because she doesn’t want to admit she cannot do everything and fears that her ineptitude (if any btw) can cause either serious harm or another super powered individual to die . Perhaps seeing Superman reminds her of how uncoordinated the JL was during her time as a 90’s member .
I still feel as though the characterization is off, but there’s something there the writer can work with . Still, we’re only 1 issue in and the story can still go anywhere despite the location/premise already being set .
Oh nooooooooooo!!!! They cut out her Brazilian secret service and Checkmate past? I thought those revelations really recolored her model era. I like that she, like Vixen, could play like superhero femme James Bonds globetrotting and supermodeling while doing secret superhero spy stuff. Bit oh well. Who knows what DC is doing. (God damn you, DiDio and Johns)
It's a shame Fire had an important role only in a JLU episode. She had a pretty funny chemistry with Wally
Their appearances in Batman: Brave and the Bold weren’t that bad either😉.
❤
I'm constantly stunned by the lack of maturity "angry" characters display in modern comics, and wonder what this says about the writers when the behavior is presented as reasonable. And it saddens me that the Big 2 can't seem to find capable writers when so many ComicTubers seem able to offer easy fixes to the narrative and characterization issues that plague so many superhero comics these days. Or maybe its an editorial issue.
This was a slice of life story, not a superhero comic. There is a place--and manga proves there is certainly a market--for this genre, but I wish that DC and Marvel would quit trying to shoehorn it into their main continuity titles. Create a separate imprint for them, or somehow visually distinguish them. When I saw the Dawn of DC banner, I assumed this would be the super-heroic adventures of these two heroines. This series was not what I am looking for in a Fire & Ice superhero comic.
Justice League International era is my favorite. They had all the superhero stuff of later runs but also had a ton of character development, personality, charm, and humor.
Give me the chockos
There was a lot of story and development in that series. It developed it's style over time. This is probably capped at 6 issues. The writer seems like she's trying to cram in all the humor with the limited time given.
Man, your casual disappointment and incredibly well-rounded critiques are waaaay more of a scathing commentary on the state of modern comics than any of these "go woke go broke" folks screaming into the void. I really enjoy your work, I'm a big fan!
I'd love to know how many people really do like this kind of comic writing, and how many of those people actually purchase comics.
That's part of the reason why Sasha is my favorite comic RUclipsr. She engages with the material on its own terms, not how she thinks the tone or story should be, and points out the flaws without being condescending. It makes her critiques much more impactful.
@@benjohnson9224 I feel its nearly impossible to find someone with such a well rounded approach to comics like Sasha. I feel like the fun of comics is the discussion, the critiques and commentary. Too often its just stern 'yes i love it' or 'no i hate it' with the dull 'meh its okay, i hope it gets better!'. Sasha actually talks about things like dialogue, framing, and complex perspectives from modern culture and past works. But never bashes anyone's opinion as wrong. Lol I wish I could have a book club like this.
A casual reminder: In the way people complain about it, Woke means "a minority succeeding at something."
Totally agree. I get that it's easy to sell "TOP 10 THINGS I WOULD CHANGE ABOUT X, FANS HATE NUMBER 8!!" but it just gets exhausting having to deal with people who are becoming radical fans. I always find Sasha delightful to listen to because while she will often have complaints, it really does come from the perspective of someone who whole heartedly loves the medium and just wants to share, and has some pretty intuitive thoughts and understanding that I just don't feel a lot of channel's emulate. Or perhaps it's the easy going "chatting, rather than lecturing" delivery that just makes me really receptive to this channel. ^^
@@TheDanishGuyReviewsNot really. If you watch those videos, the problem seems to be a frustration with the bigotry of low expectations. Characters being reduced to stereotypes and tokenization for diversity as if comics were never diverse to begin with.
There is always a problem when a writer/artist attempts to capture a run they were huge fans. What they got from the book, may not have been the entire picture.
The original JLI run was one of DC hugely popular series. The fact a humor book was so big during the “GrimDark” 80s that DC and Marvel attempted to add zany and wacky humor books.
And they failed because the original team added humor to Superhero concept as if it was a sit com. The starting point wasn’t humor, but that the interactions between the character could be funny.
Unfortunately even the JLI series suffered from being M*A*S*H level character driven comedy to Brooklyn 99 zany building topping humor. Unfortunately the humor overtake the characters.
This author was clearly never a fan of any comics
There is one thing that always stuck with me when I first read Fire's premiere in the Super Friends comic way back in the day. She flew by breathing twin streaks of flame from out of her nostrils!
If it makes you feel better about the payment situation at the salon, in the USA it's very common that beauticians aren't actually paid by the salons they work at. Rather they're the ones paying the owners of the building to rent out a styling station at the salon. (They'll take turns doing the administrative work such as answering the phone or selling products to the customers.)
Yeah, little to no money besides tips in lots of jobs. Stylists, servers, strippers - most of your vital service jobs. It's a bad system.
Really? That's messed up.
@@ashleytuchin7693 Like with being a waiter, a lot of people prefer it since there's a higher potential for money making since no one is dipping into your pockets with every transaction
@@s4juliette I think to say they prefer it would require trying both systems and comparing. Lots of people like a fair wage and benefits over a loot box based on your luck and charisma rolls. Every day as a server is essentially gambling. And the house usually wins.
Edit: also, you're still supposed to pay taxes on tips if that's what you mean by dipping.
So the US is the true villain.
Just rewatched Fire's scenes from JLAU. She sure was nice, fun, And conpetent in that one episode they gave her, while still demonstating room to grow.
Once again, you prove why DC should have you on the payroll.
At this point she should just launch her own comic universe.
Fire to Clark: "How *DARE* you steal my glory by stepping in to protect your hometown!!"
Seriously, this version of Fire is unhinged, not in a good way.
That Eminem joke caught me off guard, because he's not made a big song in a few years but with other he's STILL popular... This is getting me angry like that one commercial that was selling a new tablet, a lady looking at the kid with it said "Nice computer" and the kid said "What's a computer?", and I had a conniption fit.
Lol I had to explain dvds to my daughter the other day, they blew her mind.
The character assassination of Fire in this is so brazen and infuriating you'd think Tom King was writing it. Jeebus... 🤦♀
I was looking forward to this series. I think Fire & Ice are really fun characters, and I'm all for lesser known characters getting their own books. I will still check it out(mostly for the good art). I would like a Fire & Ice retrospective if you haven't already done one. The respect to past events are nice that also clashes with things like them feeling disrespected or the "red panties" line. I certainly hope we see this run grow as it goes on.
It just hit me. You know those bad sitcoms for kids like on the Disney channel where there are almost no good jokes and almost nothing makes sense? That's this. This is that.
One thing that kind of bugged me about this book is the same thing that bugged me about a recent Women of Marvel story about two gal pals going to an escape room or something. That is, why are they wearing their superhero costumes 24/7? At the diner, at the hair salon, walking about town with Ma Kent. One thing I liked about the Human Target book was characters, especially Ice, wore regular clothes. That just took me right out of this story. Maybe Fire wants everyone to see her as the superhero all the time, but Tora? You'd think she'd dress down as quick as possible.
As far as the story goes, it's also tough to reconcile Human Target Ice with the Ice we see here. In a team book, a one-note character portrayal is OK, but with only two main characters (plus wacky side characters), it would be nice to see more fully fleshed personalities. At least it's not as jarring as Power Girl's character in One Star Squadron that just irked the heck out of me.
This video touches on a good point. We need a deep dive on Ambush Bug. One of my favorite characters, and one who had a very interesting evolution. Last I saw him was in the finale for the animated Brave and the Bold, which was a perfect usage for him, fighting Myxyzptlk for control of Batman's legacy and narrative.
Um Actually it was Bat-Mite
It sounds like Leah Williams applied the same approach to Power Girl’s history/characterization that Starer describes in her interview.
Was going to say the same thing!
As an older fan who absolutely ATE UP the JLI run, Fire and Ice were usually much more in the "serious" column, but not so much that they were wet blankets on the fun. So yeah, this is a very different take on at least my recollection of them.
I had particularly liked that run for NOT making them either comedically incompetent OR mother hens trying to make the boys act right. And even the likes of Ted and Booster weren't total clowns. Guy Gardner even had his moments.
It is kind of weird how that series has become flanderized in popular memory as being pure slapstick.
Low key want this comic to be called "Martha and L-ron" 😂 really enjoyed both of them. Kind of underwhelmed by the rest of the issue. New Birds of Prey was awesome though!
I feel like this rewriting of the characters, including Power Girl, is more they liked them at face value, but wanted it to be their own without really looking at their actual history. I also felt the same way with Tom King with his portrayal of Booster Gold. Like, he made Booster to be this ditzy moron that could probably not even tie his laces together without having to sing a song. They see them as face value and assume that is their 1 dimensional character.
Apart of me is upset about this series. I've always loved these two characters, both together and individually. Whether in the JLI/JLA comics, their animated appearances, or their random run-ins with the Birds of Prey, I just loved their dynamic. I'm a firm believer that no matter what the plot, setting, or language used in a story is, if your characters are good, people will read anything with them in it. This story, however, manages to both destroy the previous versions of these characters and add nothing to them all in one go. The best part (in my opinion) about Fire and Ice was their dynamic. Their dynamic is very simple with they themselves as individuals being complex. Fire being self-confident without being vain or a mean girl archetype. Ice starting off as a naive simple girl from being from a sheltered tribe to actually growing out of that mentality through her untimely death and resurrection. Yet despite these differences, they had an easy friendship that was already tested time and time again, especially with Ice's death. And yet they still prevailed. This take on them as individuals and on their dynamic feels like a degradation, even if it's meant to be a restart.
I may be a little biased (I have a cover on the book), but I thought this was a fun and lighthearted read that nicely channels the comedic energy of the JLI era but spotlights these two characters apart from that larger group. I was open to a refresh/streamlined take here, and it worked for me. As a cover artist, you never know whether the book your art appears on will be amazing or lacking, but when I put this down, I had a big smile on my face.
Incompetent editors who hate comics hiring horrible writers who also hate comics
It's great when you're watching a sub par video about bad mmo rpgs then suddenly a new episode of casually comics goes up. ❤
Talk about the comic book history of the white Canary and how she is different from the arrowverse
There's not much history there, she only appeared 6 times and the two characters have literally nothing in common aside from the name White Canary
Loved the JLI run I actually like the humour especially between Beetle and Booster.
My favorite RUclips day is when Sasha and Ya Boi Zack both decimate the same comic. Feels like balance in the world.
My 1st exposure to Fire & Ice was the unaired Justice League pilot from the 90s.
So every iteration has been an improvement to me LoL
You should talk about that monstrosity someday.
First story I ever read with them was JLI Generation Lost, loved that series. It was the first collected trade I bought, got it in 2 hardcovers.
I feel the problem with this is a lack of core vision. These issues are just going to be things are happening because the plot needs to happen.
Latin dude here, representation-wise, I want to thank you for highlighting that Fire, while playful, flippant, and promicuous, is also intelligent and slick. She was who figured out what happened to Ted (Blue Beetle) during Omac. Note: That had gotten past Batman. Fire is just barely over my line of summarily dismissing any Spanish or Portuguese speaking character whose entire essence can be distilled down to 'spicy.' Don't push it, DC. As it is, her unique color scheme is doing a lot of lifting.
I'd think Fire & Ice opening a private investigation firm would make more sense, provide plenty of openings for humor, and then the story conflict could be you have two extremely visible people who like attention having their contracts being successful depending on their renowned discretion and subtlety.
But I haven't read this yet, so those are responses to this vid, not direct critiques of anyone's comic work. I'm glad creative people want Fire & Ice on the map and appreciate their energy. I'll check this out. Thanks for the nuanced critique.
13:27 “I feel like I was accosted”
Me under breath: Beatriz the Accoster
The connection between Martha and Tora looks really sweet. It does seem strange to not sit on that moment in the diner and instead quickly interupt the serious moment to introduce a side character that could be introduced after or at a later point in the story.
Maybe they were trying to pack too much in at once.
One of the things that I liked about the JLI was its approach to the characters as people first, mostly in a light hearted way. I can see where they're trying to go here, but I think of Fire as confident, but not abrasive, and not so desperate. She was one of the straighter characters.
2:21 You forgot to mention that Fire made her debut in the main universe (that was pre-Crisis Earth-One) as the Green Flame in an issue of DC comics presents in 1982.
From the comments section, alot grew up with JLI and it being a memorable time for characters. Years from now, people aren't going to be talking about this comic issue.
She looks like Polaris, Magneto's daughter 😅
it's really upsetting, cause, the idea of a slice of life/ superheroes run a business/ simple life ruined by bad guy of the week style comic.
I would love to read that! Especially with Fire and Ice. But it just feels like they are so close to getting it right where its "wrong" is all the more noticeable.
I feel like this comic can work. If Fire had some character development with her ego and the writing having some improvement. Especially in comedy.
They should have let Barbra Kesel write this. Or Mauricio de Souza with Lise Myhre. Would have been better to give them fully fleshed out personalities based off of published history rather riding of the tropes of their perceived history (meaning they’re not just comedic characters).
Agreed. Coming from Brazil, I think I've always liked Fire. Seeing her written this way was... sad, even for light-hearted comedy series.
I love stand alone small adventures, but for whatever reason, there not much going on in this for me to be interested in checking it out.
I love the '80s Fire and Ice art. Such an aesthetic.
Amazing commentary, as always, Sasha. This is not a book I would want to buy. The pencils and writing are so very juvenile in tone. Granted the JLI was very tongue in cheek back in the day, but it worked. 20-30 years ago you wouldn't find a comic where the plot was "we're being punished and have to open a salon! gahhhh". It's a no.
I think the “Guess who’s back” reference is still something you can make, I think it makes it’s rounds on the internet every so often
I always loved Fire simply by the fact she's brazilian... what can i say,we like our representatives.
I love the "Generation Lost" arc for the JLI and Fire was pun intended fire🔥🔥 loved the way her being a spy was integrated into the story and how dispite being impacient she was still mature. also i remember feeling like the JLI was a like a rogue JL during generation lost Captain Atom was the ultimate powerhouse with his own interpersonal problems (superman)
Booster Gold was a regular ass dude in a suit and the paranoid detective trying to unveil Max's plans (Batman)
Fire was the second powerhouse, also WW always felt to me like she was the middle ground between Sups heart and Bats brain, she makes her decisions using a bit of both, i remember Fire being kinda in the same place... Captain Atom was demolished by all the innocent deaths and time travel making him go in a heartfelt downward spiral and Booster couldn't think about anything that wasn't stoping Max.
In this story Fire sounds so arrogant and full of herself, a complete departure from how she's always been depicted. Another detail is that she was always hotheaded but never stupid and egocentric... in this story she keeps acting like a child and throwing tantrums all over the place in a complete "Gatekeep, Gaslight, Girlboss" style while before she was written as being more of a "I won't take your bs" character.
Well, that's it😅 thanks for coming to my TED Talk
She's Brazilian? Oh no, they're gonna put Yara Flor in the book any moment now, aren't they?
@@djpegao probably, not gonna lie this is how things are going in media nowdays
11:49 Smallville is Clark's home! His family could have been injured during the attack. What the heck, Fire?!
Why is my immediate thought that a Fire and Ice comic just ends up being a reskin of Harley Quin and Poison Ivy.
This saddens me a bit. I always loved Beatriz and Tora in old JLI comic days, and I didn’t hate them in the JLU animated days either (although they were rarely seen).
I get the feeling that the writers are using them as a foil for comedic opportunities, but it also feels like they don’t respect the characters.
Honestly, I can kinda believe the knowing the song but not knowing who Emeniem was. I think I might of done the same when I was a kid. First, time I heard guess who's back was a Yugioh Abridged parody. I didn't even know the artist's name was Emeniem I thought people said "M&M" like the candy.
DeMattis/Griffen Justice League International is as good as Lee/Kirby Fantastic Four or Claremont/Byrne X-Men. Absolutely Love the series. Wacky, silly and grounded is why JLI was so good.
Hi Sasha, I think the "Guess Who's Back..", and the, "who's that?" is meant to be pointing towards the idea that the lyrics have survived in use, beyond the lyricist, this time it being Eminem.
If not, then I'm lost for words too. 😁
So they went back to Ice being a Magical Norwegian Princess? Good. I hated that retcon from Generation Lost.
Yeah, that was a strange alteration, Generation Lost wasn't bad, but every now and again the writer would gets backstory elements wrong accidentally or intentionally.
Sometimes it feels like writers kinda remember a popular comic book run but then when referencing it in the future they go with outdated memes and criticisms that have themselves been memed and criticized by the time they make their comic
Like why do people keep only referencing the jokey not serious parts of JLI as if it was that all the time. Same with Maxwell Lord being a full on bad guy
Your review of the sort of reminds me of x-terminator (2023) it was a comedy/grindhouse book that pushed everybody out of characterization to parody and somehow still cannon.
Yeah I quit that book after issue #2 😂. It was a waste of good art smh.
X-Terminators
Edit:😂Oh my! Is that an accent for Fire? That is GLORIOUS.
But with less exploding boobs
This feels like the problem that often happens when previously support or ensemble characters are put into lead roles and the writer, trying to find character motivations, overcompensates by turning existing colorful traits into self-defeating compulsions. What makes it worse is this particular writer, rather than having Fire & Ice find a problem in Smallville to respond to, instead made Fire the cause of the problem herself, so the character ends up pulled both to antagonist and protagonist duties.
When I saw the title for this video. I thought Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, Fire, Ice, King Shark, Guy Gardner and L-Ron were being introduced in the Tom Welling Smallville comics.
i know this seems really miniscule but i love that you credit the inkers and colorists. they're widely overlooked and it's nice to see their work recognized
My favorite character from this issue was actually Martha! She is written great and was very heart warming to read. However, the central characters of Fire and Ice failed to capture me. I'm used to a much more secure and confident Fire. I found this version unamusing to read. I do like this version of Ice a little bit and her desire to settle down could be fun to explore, but not enough to carry the rest of the book for me.
Let us all take a moment to appreciate the improvement in Sasha’s character accents over the years.
I've been watching this channel for a while and I gotta say, I love the voices!
This is definitely one of the best channels on RUclips doing reviews for comics
Great video, Sasha...👍
Just personally, I like slice of life but not overtly comedic slice of life. I think Wayne Family Adventures was fun cause of its variety in the stories it tells. Some are purely comedic, others are character explorations, others are simple heartwarming stories. Meanwhile something like Superman vs Meshi is pure comedy sure, but it's not a story so much as it's a joke. The set up is that Superman is hungry, the punchline is his over the top love of the Japanese food he eats. This feels like it wants to be both pure comedy and also have a story, and I'm not sure which is which as a result. I like the base idea of these characters running a start up business on the side of being superheroes, I think their personalities are strong enough that that can work fine. But if that's the pitch, then that has to be *the pitch* if that makes sense.
I love your channel. I was so hyped for this book and you were right. It was so jarring cause this wasn’t what I thought it be. In my mind I thought it be more Thelma and Louise and less slice of life and TikTok vids
I thought you were reviewing the warrior cats book for a second
Sasha, hearing you talk about comics is chamomile tea and chubby, happy cat in my lap after a week worth of pleasing the employer. Honest thanks. 😌
Damn...I actually love your suggestions for how to fix the motivations around the salon, leading to the shark attack.
I will always love your voice for sups lmaooo
6:23 Always love calling out Superman for this. It's always weird seeing him written as this great dad to Jon when he gave Kon to his parents to raise.
Eh. I can also see that as Clark growing and learning from his mistakes with Kon, and thus being a better parent to Jon.
@@mogs2523 I like that.
Oh no, Harley's still tipped over.
Lol 😂 I was jus about to write that
I'm glad I found your video about this. The art wasn't bad but I do have a tiniest, insignificant, small, Infantismal amount of hope that series goes somewhere😅
Thank you so much 😊
Last panel sold me! I am excited to see Ambush Bug! … this seems to be a spiritual successor to One-Star Squadron
It's getting to the point of being downright concerning how often a writer in western comics tries for 'strong independant woman' and lands on 'bullish, rude sociopath' instead. It happens seemedly MOST of the time with the big two. Is this what these people think like in their personal lives? because that's kind of worrying.
That combined with the 'how do you do fellow kids' pop culture references? Don't think I'll be giving this a look lol
If anything, I would say it is a result of people trying to make the character "a stong, independent woman" rather than making the character a character, who is also a woman with independence, or strength.
For instance, they seem to feel that a woman can't be weaker than anyone or need help and still be strong. they can't have (intentional) flaws, and when you strip away all of that(i.e. all the ways that characters have depth) you are left with a very shallow character that needs to keep proving how strong and independent they are.
@@thomasplummer8103No they definitely have flaws the story acknowledges. The problem is that these are archetypes. Fire and Ice are both props for the author to push their views onto, rather than taking the characters' histories into consideration when constricting the narrative.
I really wanted to see her espionage background come more upfront, but it's still early days...
Fire's presentation here is really jarring and weird. I dont remember her and ice ever being portrayed like this before. And while their stint in the League was more comedic they themselves were never treated as jokes. Honestly to my remembrance the ones treated as jokes both in universe and by fans were usually Booster and Blue Beetle. Fire comes across super self obsessed and abrasive here and its just painfully cringe.
I just realized that both Fire and Sunspot from Marvel are Brazilian superheroes with fire powers.
Guess we should have known this wouldn't go well. As the bard once sang, "with Fire and Ice a dream won't come true"...before going off about some girl named Sarah. Frankly, comedy that seems to just thrown all the jokes and see what sticks combined with "greetings, fellow kids" appears from the review to be the biggest problems with the comic. As a concept I think it could work and the few stories I've seen with Fire and Ice together show the potential of two besties in a team book. This doesn't really feel like what the writer is going for, if she's doing a superhero story at all. I like the art though.
Love your videos! I like the art style but I always liked fire being a tease to other heroes she likes
Do a video on Guy and Ice's relationship please!
Nice Cinema Sins title parody, Sasha!
it sounds like they're trying to make them girl blue beetle and booster gold
this video single-handedly made me interested in a comic I was ready to ignore.
looking forward to reading it!
Do it!
2:09 That original Fradon design for Fire looks so cool, never seen it before.
This is a little random but I LOVE the L plushie you have in the background. 😭💖
You bring up the point I always make. While I love JLI people forget it wasn't all jokes. The fact people only remember that is what hurts characters like Fire, Ice, Booster, & Blue Beetle. Not really any other character from the team though. Black Canary for example
While I enjoyed the issue I see all the points you make.
From JLI and spin-offs Fire and Ice left me the impression of being the rational sane part of the league, the ones who trace a course of action as Bea is more impulsive and Tora more patient... and that was very important because them doing Team-up with Booster, Ted, Billy, Guy or Karen was probably the best way to move the story when they needed to get into the problem so this is not my flavor of taste... but mabye is someone else's flavor, has a good art.
I love your videos
15:05 - 15:13, O Sasha, I like your armchair editing so far.
The "Bwa-ha-ha" era of the Justice League? First time I've heard that term, but it's a good fit!
As for Fire and Ice, they always seemed like second-rate superheroes who haven't found their proper niche yet. Which is probably why they were used for comedic relief back in the JLA. They made good foils for Guy Gardner, Booster Gold, and Blue Beetle. And based on this issue, it doesn't look like they've found their niche here, either. But who knows, maybe a bunch of fan-girls will like it.
I remember enjoying JLI back in the day, though I couldn't tell you much of anything about it now, having never revisited it since. Likewise, my level of recognition of Fire and Ice is that... they're Fire and Ice. So I went into this, largely blank slate.
And I liked it. It made me chuckle a couple of times and I'm interested in what happens next.
Finally, FIre and Ice content
I like how silly Casually Comics voices superman in the video lol.
I can see someone getting the idea that no one respects Fire & Ice, but it doesn't feel like something that has a lot of basis in their history. It feels like it's just a take that Starer wanted to run with, similar to the way Moore introduced the idea of there being some kind of - one-sided - beef between Power Girl and Supergirl.
In fairness, this issue would have been a bit less jarring to me if it weren't following so closely on the heels of their roles in Human Target. Especially Ice.
